Boston Blue Twist! Blue Bloods Spinoff Recasts a Reagan Family Member (and in Turn Explains Danny's Big Move)
CBS' upcoming Blue Bloods offshoot has added another Reagan — though he will look a bit different when he shows up. A 'universe expansion' of the long-running family/crime drama, Boston Blue (airing Fridays at 10/9c this fall) finds Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan taking a position with the Boston Police Department. There, he is paired with Detective Lena Silver (Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Mika Amonsen — whose credits include TV's The Republic of Sarah and Hudson and Rex, as well as the 2023 slasher film Thanksgiving — has been cast in the series regular role of Sean Reagan, Danny's youngest son (of two). Sean of course was originally played across all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods by Andrew Terraciano, in what was practically Terraciano's only acting role. In Boston Blue, Sean has relocated to Boston to start his own new chapter, as a patrolman for the Boston PD — thus paving the way for his father's own major move. 'Sean committed himself to pursuing his family's legacy but wanted to do so on his own terms, which meant joining a department outside of his hometown,' the official character description reads. 'Danny's decision to stay in Boston gives this father-and-son duo a chance to reconnect on a deeper level.' The Boston Blue cast also includes Gloria Reuben (ER) as Mae Silver, family matriarch and Boston's District Attorney; Ernie Hudson (NBC's Quantum Leap reboot) as Lena's grandfather, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston; Maggie Lawson (Psych) as Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver, Lena's 'strong-willed' and 'decisive' stepsister; and Marcus Scribner (black-ish) as Jonah, Lena and Sarah's rookie cop brother. Boston Blue: Donnie Wahlberg Marks ‘A New Chapter' for Blue Bloods' Danny Reagan at First Table Read
Danny Reagan's story is ready to resume. Nearly seven months after CBS' long-running Blue Bloods aired its series finale, franchise vet Donnie Wahlberg RSVP'd for the first table read for Boston Blue, the 'universe expansion' announced back in February. More from TVLine Reasonable Doubt Season 3: Get Fall Premiere Date, First Photos Paramount, President Trump Reach $16 Million Settlement Over 60 Minutes Lawsuit Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent Sets Fall Premiere Date on The CW Wahlberg flew into Toronto, Ontario — Boston Blue's production base — the other night, sharing on Instagram, 'A new day. A new city. A new opportunity. A new adventure. The same gratitude.' The morning after, he snapped a pic from the first Boston Blue table read, where he was seated next to leading lady Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery). 'A new chapter,' he wrote, adding a (Boston?) blue heart emoji. The offshoot's pilot is penned by showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, and will be directed by Anthony Hemingway (whose myriad TV credits include Major Crimes, Shameless and Starz's Power Universe). Ordered to series on Feb. 18, Boston Blue finds Wahlberg's Detective Danny Reagan leaving New York City and his family to take a position with the Boston PD. There, he will be partnered with Martin-Green's Detective Lena Silver, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. The cast also includes Gloria Reuben (ER) as Mae Silver, family matriarch and Boston's District Attorney; Ernie Hudson (NBC's Quantum Leap reboot) as Lena's grandfather, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston; Maggie Lawson (Psych) as Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver, Lena's 'strong-willed' and 'decisive' stepsister; and Marcus Scribner (black-ish) as Jonah, Lena and Sarah's rookie cop brother. Shazad Latif honored to tell Capt. Nemo's origin story in 'Nautilus'
1 of 3 | Shazad Latif and Georgia Flood star in "Nautilus." New episodes air on Sunday nights. Photo courtesy of AMC NEW YORK, July 6 (UPI) -- Star Trek: Discovery and Penny Dreadful alum Shazad Latif says he was excited to star in Nautilus and find ways to make Jules Verne's classic adventure story, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, his own. "That's the beauty of what we were able to do. It was a privilege, it was an honor, but it was very fun to get a chance to do that which you don't really get to do -- the origin story," Latif, 36, told UPI in a recent phone interview. "We sort of had free rein, so it was a very freeing experience, really." Set in the late 19th century, the series follows Captain Nemo as he escapes a British penal colony, steals back the show's titular submarine, which he designed for the East India Mercantile Company, and sets out with a ragtag crew to find a fabled Viking treasure. New episodes air Sundays on AMC and AMC+ The ensemble includes Georgia Flood, Céline Menville, Thierry Fremont, Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor. Like the Nemo in the book, Latif's hero is a bit of a mystery when viewers first meet him. "He still is a brilliant man, but we're seeing the man before the myth," the actor said. "You don't really get to know him in 20,000 Leagues. You don't really get to know his origin story properly, until Mysterious Island, the other book, so we're watching this genius, radical dude, but you're watching the young version, how he was shaped by the colonial forces around him, the trauma of that," Latif added. "He's a deeply emotional person. He's idealistic and and we watch him grow. We watch him learn that you can't do everything on your own." Along for the ride are several other former inmates -- who have no idea how to crew a type of underwater vessel they've never seen before -- along with several British captives and one very hungry dog. "It's almost a dictatorship at the start. He gives a lot of commands and expects a lot of action and no one to question him," Latif said of Nemo. "I suppose that's where the trouble starts -- when he realizes he has to open up and tell them his story and what happened to him, the horrible things that happened to him at the hands the East India Company, and show some vulnerability to get them on his side," Latif added. "It wouldn't just work if he's just giving orders." Nemo feels ownership of the Nautilus because he helped build the ship and named it for the type of seashell his beloved dead daughter once gave him. "It's his home. It's also his chance for revenge," Latif said of the Nautilus. "This is a ship that can give him what he wants and he needs the treasure to get back to London." Throughout the season, Nemo discovers there is more to life than his vendetta against the East India Company. "It becomes a safe haven," Latif said of the ship. "It becomes a home and then it becomes a thing of exploration and he opens up a bit to the beauty of the world by the end of it and realizes he's not just going to be hell-bent for the rest of his life against the East India Company. He is going to explore." Latif thinks audiences will relate to the show's themes of wealth, power and exploitation because there are still institutions crushing people in real life in 2025. "We keep saying we're more evolved and more civilized, but, I suppose, every day, there's still things going on which are still as bad as what the East India Company used to be," Latif said. "The reality is, they did some horrific, horrific things. Obviously, our show's a bit lighter than that and we touch on it, but it's, obviously, an adventure, a family show with elements of Pirates of the Caribbean," he added. "So, we don't delve deep into the horrific elements as such, even though it's obviously there as the backdrop. But it definitely resonates today. Just go look at the news and there's some horrific things going on, so it's just a timely reminder, I guess." Helping the cast immerse itself in the show's specific time and place were elaborate sets, including a magnificent practical representation of the Nautilus. "There was loads of CGI, but our ship was a working, walk-able thing, which was its own alive being. It was so well-designed and just puts you into the world and you're stuck in the studio all day and you don't really get much sunlight, so it just sort of felt like you were on the ship," Latif said. "It just made our job more fun and easier." Working in such close quarters for long amounts of time also helped the cast get to know each other really well. "You're all sitting together in the tent. Someone's napping. Someone's doing some work. Someone's drinking coffee," Latif said. "You just naturally form that bond that would naturally form on a ship." Secrets don't stay secrets for long... Don't miss a new episode of #Nautilus tonight at 9PM on AMC or stream it early on AMC+. AMC TV (@AMC_TV) July 6, 2025

Boston Blue: Everything We Know So Far About the Blue Bloods Offshoot
At least one Reagan family member's story will continue to be told when Boston Blue debuts on CBS. Ordered to series on Feb. 18 — two months after Blue Bloods ended its well-watched, 14-season run — Boston Blue finds franchise vet Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as veteran police detective Danny Reagan. This time, however, Danny will be policing the streets of Boston, alongside a new partner. More from TVLine S.W.A.T. Vet Jay Harrington Breaks Silence on EXILES Surprise: 'I Did Not Have Spinoff on My Bingo Card' (Exclusive) Casting News: Boston Blue Adds Maggie Lawson, Lincoln Lawyer Enlists Cobie Smulders and More Survivor Turns 25: Was Jonny Fairplay's Dead Grandma Lie the Series' Most Villainous Play Ever? Vote! Who is this new partner, when will Boston Blue air, and who else will be seen on the series? Here, as they say, is everything we know so far…. Technically, no. Boston Blue since Day 1 has been described as a 'universe expansion of the long-running top drama Blue Bloods,' in part because its premise was born of an entirely unrelated project. As Deadline reported, the only Donnie Wahlberg-led Blue Bloods offshoot that had been pitched (but got passed on) would have transplanted Danny Reagan to Texas. Boston Blue showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, meanwhile, had independently developed a series that would follow a family of cops in Boston whose eldest daughter is partnered with a new transfer from LAPD. NYPD vet Danny is now that transfer. In Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan takes a position with the Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Silvers, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Thus far, Donnie Wahlberg is the only Blue Bloods vet confirmed to appear on the spinoff universe expansion — though there surely will be mentions of the Reagan fam and friends back in New York, if not some flesh-and-blood cameos… eventually. 'Danny's story will continue the Reagan family's. You can't have Danny without Reagans,' Wahlberg said at a May press event. 'No Blue Bloods fans will be disappointed,' Wahlberg avowed, reiterating: 'We are really working on this universe in a way that I think the Blue Bloods viewers are going to be very happy.' First and foremost, Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery, The Walking Dead) will star alongside Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Lena Silver, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Additionally, Ernie Hudson (NBC's Quantum Leap reboot) has been cast as Lena's grandfather, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston, while Psych vet Maggie Lawson will play Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver, Lena's 'strong-willed' and 'decisive' stepsister. At least two other series regulars have yet to be cast. Fact is, precious few scripted TV series have ever made camp in Boston, with Robert Urich's mid-1980s crime drama, Spenser: For Hire, being one of the exceptions. ABC' A Million Little Things (see photo above) was famously set in Boston (however devoid as it was of any accents) but filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Even Blue Bloods patriarch Tom Selleck's Massachusetts-based Jesse Stone TV movies were filmed in Nova Scotia. Boston Blue will film some exteriors in Boston, but production will be based out of Toronto, Ontario (that's in Canada). When CBS unveiled its fall schedule, there Boston Blue was, confirmed for a fall debut and calling Blue Bloods' old Fridays-at-10/9c time slot home. There, Boston Blue will lead out of Sheriff Country and that freshman spinoff's sire, Fire Country. CBS typically sets fall premieres dates by mid-July, and TVLine will of course keep you posted on when, exactly, Boston Blue will debut. Like its ancestor Blue Bloods, Boston Blue will air on CBS, Friday nights at 10/9c, with episodes available for streaming the next day on Paramount+. Want scoop on , or for any other TV show?
