New on Paramount Plus this month — all the new shows and movies to watch

Paramount Plus adds tons of new shows and movies every month, and this July is no different. Leading the pack on the streaming service this month are a pair of hit original franchises back with new episodes. "Dexter: Resurrection" continues the "Dexter" franchise, picking up mere weeks after the events of "Dexter: New Blood." But we've abandoned the small town of Iron Lake, New York, and are headed for the Big Apple in this new spin-off. Later in the month, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" returns for its third season. The prequel series premieres on July 17, and if you ask any "Trek" fan, they'll tell you that you don't want to miss it. Here's everything new on Paramount Plus this month, starting with our top picks. If you need more to watch, check out these five highly-rated movies that arrived on Paramount Plus last month. "Dexter" has been a massive hit for Paramount. The Showtime original series about the titular vigilante serial killer has spawned 10 seasons of television across three shows, including this latest spin-off. "Dexter: Resurrection" picks up weeks after the events of "New Blood," in which Dexter (Michael C. Hall) miraculously recovered from a gunshot wound. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. But when he wakes in his hospital bed to find Miami PD Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas) waiting to bring him to justice, he ditches the small town of Iron Lake, New York, and heads for New York City to disappear — and find his missing son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). Premieres July 11 on Paramount Plus Premium "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, captain of the USS Enterprise. Now, if that name — and that ship — sound familiar, that's because they're both famously from "Star Trek: The Original Series." This series is a prequel to that groundbreaking sci-fi show, set in the decade prior. Because it's a prequel, Captain Pike isn't the only familiar name. Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn) and several other characters have returned. The season 2 finale even saw the arrival of Starfleet engineer Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). Season 3 will cover the third year of the Enterprise's five-year mission, marking the midpoint of the series. If you have loved "Star Trek" in the past, it's time to return to the fold for "Strange New Worlds" if you haven't already. Premieres July 17 on Paramount Plus I'm not a huge reality TV fan, but I make a few exceptions. "The Traitors," of course, is one. But "The Challenge" was the first competition show I really got into. For those who have never seen "The Challenge," the reality competition show pits dozens of competitors against each other in grueling tasks and brutal eliminations. But the show's secret sauce is the drama between competitors we see play out in the house once the day's events are over. Lately, it's been a show more about athletic prowess than social game, which is why I've come to love "The Challenge: All Stars." This version of the show features older stars from seasons past who know your social game matters as much as your physical strength. Because all the "All Stars" are veterans, they also bring plenty of baggage when they come to compete. In season 5, the competitors are paired with one of their historic rivals, and you'll have to tune in to see who can stand to work with each other and who still holds a grudge. Watch it on Paramount Plus starting July 16 JULY 1 "Monster Summer"* When a mysterious force begins to disrupt their big summer fun, a group of friends team up with a retired police detective (played by Mel Gibson) to embark on an adventure to save their island. JULY 2 "Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado" premiere In this new live-action movie, the world's greatest explorer and her friends will trek through the perilous dangers of the Amazonian jungle in search of the ancient treasure of Sol Dorado to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. "Dora" season 3 premiere It's Dora, the world's most famous exploradora! Join her and all her friends on brand new, magical adventures in the rainforest! JULY 11 "Dexter: Resurrection" series premiere* The highly anticipated original drama series is a continuation of Dexter: New Blood, taking place weeks after Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) takes a bullet to the chest from his own son, as he awakens from a coma to find Harrison (Jack Alcott) gone without a trace. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But closure won't come easily. JULY 17 "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" season 3 premiere The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is still under the command of Captain Pike as they face the conclusion of season two's harrowing encounter with the Gorn. But new life and civilizations await, including a villain that will test their grit and resolve. The STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Team Is Looking to Set Up a Soft Reboot of the Original Series — GeekTyrant

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fans have come to accept the bittersweet news that the series will wrap up after five seasons. But while that may seem like the end of the road, the show's creative team isn't ready to put away their phasers just yet, in fact, they may already have a clever workaround to keep the mission going. At the Season 3 premiere in New York, executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers opened up about what's next. When asked why now was the time to announce the end, Goldsman explained: "It just happened. The truth is, we have been, from the beginning, hoping for a five year mission. And that was the plan, but you also have to not wear out your welcome. 'And the folks who determine whether or not you wear out your welcome [are the ones] who pay. And so, they gave us this abbreviated fifth season right on the heels of giving us a fourth season. Nothing stays a secret." This wasn't entirely their choice as Paramount called the shot, and while the series will complete the five-year mission they initially were hoping for, it's not necessarily the sendoff the creators wanted. Still, both Goldsman and Myers made it clear they're not done dreaming. When asked where the Star Trek universe might go from here, Myers responded: "I don't know. I know Alex [Kurtzman] is going to be doing 'Starfleet Academy.' But my focus is singular. I'm 'Strange New Worlds' all the time. But would I like to get us right up to the edge of ['The Original Series'] and then have somebody call us and say, 'Now make that show!'" That's when Goldsman chimed in saying: "We literally have a fantastic cast and we have incredible sets and we have all these things right there — it's a shame to waste it." The idea here is simple, if Paramount is ending Strange New Worlds , maybe they'll let the same team roll right into a spiritual sequel, one that takes place in the era of The Original Series with the current cast already in place. Seems like a great idea and one that fans of Strange New World would embrace. They've got Ethan Peck as Spock, Paul Wesley as Kirk, and beautifully detailed Enterprise sets ready to go. Why tear it all down when they could just keep the journey going under a different title? Whether or not Paramount bites, it's clear Goldsman and Myers are setting the table. They're not asking fans to say goodbye. Not yet. They're hoping to pass the torch without ever putting it out. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 premieres July 17, 2025, on Paramount+. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' third season falls short of its second

This is a spoiler-free preview of the first five episodes of season three. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ended its second season with arguably the single strongest run of any streaming-era Trek. The show was made with such confidence in all departments that if there were flaws, you weren't interested in looking for them. Since then, it's gone from being the best modern Trek, to being the only modern Trek. Unfortunately, at the moment it needs to be the standard bearer for the show, it's become noticeably weaker and less consistent. As usual, I've seen the first five episodes, but can't reveal specifics about what I've seen. I can say plenty of the things that made Strange New Worlds the best modern-day live-action Trek remain in place. It's a show that's happy for you to spend time with its characters as they hang out, and almost all of them are deeply charming. This is, after all, a show that uses as motif the image of the crew in Pike's quarters as the captain cooks for his crew. Its format, with standalone adventures blended with serialized character drama, means it can offer something new every week. Think back to the first season, when 'Memento Mori,' a tense action thriller with the Gorn, was immediately followed by 'Spock Amock,' a goofy, starbase-set body-swap romantic comedy of manners centered around Spock. Strange New Worlds is the first Trek in a long while to realize audiences don't just want a ceaseless slog of stern-faced, angry grimdark. And if they want that, they can go watch Picard and Section 31 . Marni Grossman/Paramount+ But, as much as those things are SNW's greatest strength, it's a delicate balance to ensure the series doesn't lurch too far either way. And, it pains me to say this, the show spends the first five episodes of its third season going too far in both directions (although, mercifully, not at the same time). No specifics, but one episode I'm sure was on the same writers room whiteboard wishlist as last season's musical episode. What was clearly intended as a chance for everyone to get out of their usual roles and have fun falls flat. Because the episode can never get past the sense it's too delighted in its own silliness to properly function. Marni Grossman/Paramount+ At the other end of the scale, we get sprints toward the eye-gouging grimdark that blighted those other series. Sure, the series has gone to dark places before, but previously with more of a sense of deftness, rather than just going for the viscerally-upsetting gore. A cynic might suggest that, as Paramount's other Trek projects ended, franchise-overseer Alex Kurtzman — who has pushed the franchise into 'grittier' territory whenever he can — had more time to spend in the SNW writers' room. Much as I've enjoyed the series' soapier elements, the continuing plotlines take up an ever bigger part of each episode's runtime so far. Consequently, the story of the week gets less service, making them feel weaker and less coherent. One episode pivots two thirds of the way in to act as a low-key sequel to an episode from season two. But since we've only got ten minutes left, it feels thrown in as an afterthought, or to resolve a thread the creative team felt they were obliged to deal with (they didn't). In fact, this and the recently-finished run of Doctor Who suffered from the same problem that blights so many streaming-era shows, which is the limited episode order. Rather than producing TV on the scale broadcast networks were able to — yearly runs of 22-, 24- or 26 episodes, a lot of (expensive) genre shows get less than half that. The result is that each episode has to be More Important Than The Last One in a way that's exhausting for a viewer. But Strange New Worlds can't solve all the economic issues with the streaming model on its own. My hope is that, much like in its first season, the weaker episodes are all in its front half to soften us up for the moments of quality that followed toward its conclusion. ASIDE: Shortly before publication, Paramount announced Strange New Worlds would end in its fifth season, which would be cut from ten episodes to six. It's not surprising — given the equally-brilliant Lower Decks was also axed after passing the same milestone — but it is disappointing. My only hope is that the series doesn't spend that final run awkwardly killing off the series' young ensemble one by one in order to replace them with the entire original series' roster as to make it "line up." Please, let them be their own things.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Boldly Ends With Shortened Season 5

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to air, but the end is already in sight. In a surprising twist for one of the most successful and popular shows in recent years, Paramount+ confirmed that Season 5 will be its last outing, with production beginning later this year. Instead of the usual 10 episodes, which is set to continue into the fourth season, the concluding run will be reduced to six episodes. The news comes amid cost-cutting measures at Paramount Global, following an earlier announcement to reduce its U.S.-based headcount by 15 percent. On the flip side, it's worth noting that none of the newer Star Trek entries have gotten past five seasons, which may or may not be related to Captain Kirk's talk of a five-year mission from its earliest days. 'From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honour what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,' said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman in a joint statement. 'We're deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.' Taking place in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike led the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk took over, the prequel series debuted in 2022 and has since been nominated for multiple awards. The upcoming third season, premiering on 17 July in the U.S., stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, along with guest star Carol Kane, and special guest star Paul Wesley. It won't mark the end of Star Trek 's legacy, with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy next in line to launch into space. Hailing from showrunner Noga Landau, it stars Holly Hunter as a Starfleet captain who leads the Academy, and is expected to drop either this year or early 2026. As for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , both Season 4 and 5 remain undated. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get.
