Wiltshire in Pictures: Harvesting, minions and sun
It has been a busy week for Wiltshire photographers, with clear skies allowing the county to shine in all its glory. Meanwhile walkers braved the heat to raise more than £100,000 for Salisbury Hospital's Stars Appeal, a time capsule was buried at Longleat, and new mobile library vans were unveiled. Nightlight: The clear nights allowed the moon to shine so bright that farmer David White could capture magical scenes on the Marlborough Downs. Out in force: More than 2,000 people took part in a sponsored walk for Salisbury Hospital's Stars Appeal at Wilton House on Sunday, some in fancy dress such as minions costumes. Many of those taking part dedicated their walk to loved-ones and more than £100,000 was raised. Time after time: A time capsule was sealed at Longleat to mark the building of a new hippo complex. Dignitaries including Wiltshire Council leader Ian Thorn and Mayor of Warminster Andrew Cooper were in attendance. A wheel-y good read: Wiltshire Council has launched new mobile library vans, which will help to improve rural and residential access to books. The vehicles will serve 318 stops and are wheelchair-accessible. Golden glow: BBC Weather Watcher Mark from Bishopstone captured this arable scene in the early morning, with crops almost ready for harvesting. Reflections: At the opposite end of the county, snaphappydave has been wandering the meadows of Salisbury on the hunt for photographic perfection. He captured this image of a leaning tree, mirrored in a calm river. View from a horse: As temperatures heat up over the weekend, the already parched fields of west Wiltshire will turn increasingly brown. BBC Weather Watcher G Man captured this patchwork effect from above Westbury White Horse. Follow BBC Wiltshire on Facebook, X and Instagram. Wiltshire in Pictures: A star visits and baking sun
As the county sweltered this week, Olivia Colman visited Salisbury District Hospital as part of her role as patron of the Stars Appeal. The Oscar-winning actress brought a smile to patients' faces and paid tribute to the charity's donors, fundraisers and volunteers. Meanwhile, patrons of a pub in Corsley, near Warminster, welcomed back a characterful owl – and elsewhere, our weather watchers were out capturing the best of the sunshine. Meet me halfway: Janet Baldock has just reached the mid-point on her trek of the entire Wales Coast Path, having set out from Chester in April. Ms Baldock, from Shalbourne near Great Bedwyn, is raising money for the Support Dogs charity after learning about autism assistance dogs. Wetting my beak: This owl is the unlikely new regular at The White Hart in Corsley. Named Arllo, he has made himself at home, visiting the pub at least once a week with his keeper. Field of gold: The sweltering sun has shown no mercy this week – beating down on crops such as the wheat in this field in Grittleton near Castle Combe. Parched land: On the opposite side of the county, weather watcher Nerea M captured this image of Stonehenge, where the grass is yellowing in the heat. Moody mornings: In Upavon, weather watcher TAG caught a misty moment as the sun rose over a country path. Toast of the village: The Chalke History Festival came to an end on Sunday after a week of talks, events and living history performances. Jane from Jane's Historical Kitchen exhibited period-appropriate crockery and showed visitors how to make a decorative pie lid. Moving out: In another blow to Swindon town centre, it has been announced that the Swindon & Wiltshire Pride Hub will be leaving the Regent Circus shopping centre. Nando's is now the only company trading at the complex, which opened in 2014. Follow BBC Wiltshire on Facebook, X and Instagram. Send your story ideas to us on email or via WhatsApp on 0800 313 4630. Throat cancer patient praises new Salisbury District Hospital kit
A throat cancer patient has praised new equipment at Salisbury District Hospital for making an uncomfortable procedure more bearable for Russell, 67, from Maiden Bradley, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in November 2019 after discovering a lump in his throat. Since then, he has undergone monthly check-ups using videoscopes to monitor his condition - a procedure he once described as feeling like going "a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson".With funding from the Stars Appeal, the hospital's charity, six new videoscopes which cut appointment times have been purchased at a cost of £115,000. These devices allow for quicker and more comfortable diagnoses for patients with suspected head and neck their introduction in September, more than 1,600 patients referred with suspected head and neck cancers have benefitted from their use. 'Felt like a punch' Mr Russell said: "I am well used to this unpleasant procedure, but the new cameras make it so much more comfortable. For new patients, they will significantly reduce the fear of having it done."He added: "The new cameras made the procedure so much easier to manage. Sometimes it used to feel like being punched in the nose."The upgraded scopes also offer doctors much clearer images, helping them to detect changes in patients over time. This is particularly important for people like Mr Russell, whose cancer has been persistent and unpredictable. "The unique nature of my cancer meant it kept coming and going. This equipment is really important because doctors can now see subtle changes that may signal something's happening," he scopes are part of a new 'one-stop' diagnostic service led by the hospital's Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) and Maxillofacial can now receive assessments in a single visit, instead of attending multiple departments. ENT consultant Mr Kostas Marinakis said the new equipment has had a major impact. "The superior image quality gives us the best chance of detecting early cancers and significantly improves the comfort of the procedure. "We're extremely grateful to the Stars Appeal supporters for making this possible."
