Pregnant women taken on bullock cart, cot through slushy roads after heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh
Pregnant women and other people in emergency situations have been facing severe problems as many villages in Madhya Pradesh have lost contact with their district headquarters due to inundation after heavy rains. Two such cases of pregnant women bearing the brunt of poor roads due to overflowing rivers and streams have come to the fore in the last few days. In one case, a woman experiencing labour pain was taken to hospital by crossing a river in a bullock cart, while in another case, a pregnant woman had to be taken on a cot to an ambulance as the vehicle could not reach her house due to the waterlogged road. While a government official said they will probe which department was responsible for the poor road conditions, the Opposition Congress targeted the ruling BJP and asked if the government was making efforts to address the people's woes. A State BJP leader, however, said road networks were laid up to villages in the last 20 years, enabling people to use health services in emergency situations. A tribal labourers' organisation warned of an agitation if the government did not take concrete steps to address their problems by August 15. Sunita, resident of Bod Raiyat village under Chicholi development block, located 60 km from Betul district headquarters, started getting labour pains on Sunday. Her husband Bablu Adivasi told PTI that when he could not find a way to take her to hospital due to the flooded Bhanji river causing inundation in their area, he discussed the matter with others villagers. "The villagers showed courage and Sunita was taken across the river in a bullock cart and then to Chirapatla Hospital in an ambulance," he said. A video shared widely on social media showed the woman lying in the bullock cart and four-five persons pushing it across the river to take her to the other side. Bablu said his wife later gave birth to a healthy baby in the hospital and both the mother and child were fine. "If the villagers had not come forward showing courage, I would not have been able to take my wife to the hospital. Anything could have happened in such a situation," he said. Rajendra Garhwal of the Shramik Adivasi Sangathan, an NGO in Betul, said the Bhanji river passes through the village and several agitations have been held to demand the construction of a bridge over it, but no concrete steps have been taken so far. Many accidents have occurred in the river, but the administration remains "careless", he claimed. Garhwal said if concrete steps are not taken towards the construction of the bridge by August 15, then the sangathan will launch a big agitation. In a similar case, Chanchal, aged around 30 and resident of Barokhari village under Lahar assembly constituency in Bhind district, experienced severe labour pain on Monday. The Dalit woman's family called an ambulance but it was unable to reach their house, located 60 km from the district headquarters, as the approach road was waterlogged and slushy following heavy rainfall. Four persons then carried her on a cot through the muddy road to the ambulance. Zila Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Sunil Dubey later told reporters that an inquiry will be conducted to determine which department was responsible for the poor condition of the road, and further action will be taken based on the findings. On the poor condition of roads in rural areas during the monsoon, Dubey said gram panchayats get limited funds, making it difficult to carry out many development works. Garhwal, however, claimed there was no shortage of financial resources in the state, but the work was being postponed by making excuses for the budget. "But, now playing with the lives of villagers will not be tolerated," he added. Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari shared a video of the Betul incident on X to hit out at the state government. Referring to the video, he said, "This is the scene from Chicholi area of Ghoradongri assembly constituency in Betul! Is this compulsion to cross the Bhanji river a sign of strong leadership?" Patwari also targeted state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, who represents Betul in the state assembly. "The public, tired of protesting, is asking, does the BJP state president not even listen to them now?" he said in the post. MP BJP media in-charge Ashish Agrawal, however, said, "The Congress should not forget its 50 years' rule during which no development took place, especially in rural areas. By raising such issues, they are exposing themselves and it reflects on their poor track-record of governance." In the last 20 years, road networks were laid right up to villages and that was the reason ambulances were able to reach to the nearest point, enabling people to use the services in emergency situations, he added. As per the IMD, Madhya Pradesh recorded 645.8 mm rainfall in this monsoon season, compared to 418.4 mm during the same period last year, which is 54 per cent more than normal.

Karnataka BJP demands action against firms selling fake seeds, fertiliser
As farmers across the state staged protests over an alleged shortage of urea and reports of fake agricultural inputs surfaced, the state BJP on Sunday accused the Congress-led government of negligence and demanded immediate action against companies distributing counterfeit seeds and fertilisers. He claimed that despite receiving sufficient quantities of urea from the Centre, the government had failed to ensure proper distribution, causing distress among farmers and panic in several districts. 'The efforts to trouble the food-providing farmers and exploit them within the system have been ongoing for a long time. Companies supplying fertilizers and seeds are engaging in the despicable act of sabotaging agricultural activities by providing fake seeds to the enthusiastic farming community that is expecting a good harvest in the backdrop of a promising monsoon this time,' Vijayendra said. He demanded the registration of criminal cases against such firms and called for a dedicated police vigilance team to investigate and dismantle networks involved in deceiving farmers. 'I urge the government to file a criminal case against such companies in this regard and take strict action, and also to take all necessary measures to ensure that the farming community gets quality seeds and necessary fertilizers in a timely manner,' he added. Vijayendra further said the BJP's farmers' wing would stage statewide protests on Monday to express solidarity with the farming community. According to him, the state received over 870,000 metric tonnes of urea from the Centre, but only around 530,000 metric tonnes had reached the market. He alleged that the remaining quantity was being hoarded by middlemen and traders, with the state government turning a blind eye. 'What about the rest? The fear is that somewhere there is some kind of hand-in-glove. Brokers and traders are keeping the stocks; it has to be released. The state government is trying to create an artificial shortage. This will not help farmers and that's the reason farmers are upset,' he said. The BJP leader claimed the early arrival of the monsoon had worsened the situation. 'This time, mother nature has embraced the farmers through a good monsoon, I urge the government to take all possible precautionary measures to thwart any fraudulent attempts that may disrupt the farmers from enjoying its benefits,' Vijayendra said. Agriculture minister N Chaluvarayaswamy, however, pushed back against the allegations, attributing the pressure on fertiliser supply to a combination of early monsoon and increased cultivation. 'The rains have been good for the past one and a half months. The monsoon arrived early, which has caused some challenges as the dams have filled up sooner than expected. Moreover, the area under cultivation has increased by two lakh hectares. Because of these factors, the demand for fertilizer has gone up. I have urged the chief minister to focus on addressing the farmers' issues instead of criticising them, and requested him to write a letter,' he said. The minister said the global situation had also disrupted supply chains. 'I have already written to minister Pralhad Joshi regarding the disruption in urea supply due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. I've also sent letters to all MPs from the state and the Union ministers representing Karnataka. Yet, Joshi ignored these efforts and instead chose to target Siddaramaiah,' he said. 'I didn't expect them to politicise an issue as serious as agriculture. Fertilizer used to be supplied on time, and we had better stock last season. But currently, there are two or three issues at the central level. Due to the Iran conflict, urea supply has been disrupted, and shipments from China have completely stopped. National-level production is also low,' he said, insisting that the Centre must step up. Chaluvarayaswamy sought to reassure farmers. 'I can criticise too, but that's not what matters right now. What's important is resolving the problems farmers are facing. Farmers need not worry. We will ensure they get whatever they need, whenever they need it. Everyone should remain calm. Even if there's a delay of two days, we'll make sure it's delivered by the third or fourth day,' he added.

CM Revanth Reddy gets PM Modi's time, not Rahul Gandhi's appointment: BJP
The BJP Telangana unit has said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi denying appointment to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is an 'insult' to the people of Telangana. 'The Chief Minister made 46 trips to Delhi in the last 19 months. Neither Mr. Gandhi nor other senior Congress leaders had bothered to meet him. But, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Central Ministers gave appointments to Mr. Revanth Reddy,' reminded State BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Monday. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi at the Telangana Bhavan, the BJP chief said Congress leaders are 'fooling' the Telangana people with regard to the 42% quota bill for the Backward Classes (BCs) and deliberately enacting a 'drama' to avoid holding local body polls. Reiterating the party's stand against including 10% Muslims quota in the 42% reservation for the BCs, he questioned the government's seriousness about the reservations as it seemed to have overlooked the prevailing legal issues pending in the Supreme Court. 'Does the Congress government know the procedure to include the BCs quota in the Ninth Schedule? What is the opinion of their legal advisors? The government has to amend section 285 of the Panchayat Raj Act to include the BC quota,' he said. It is not fair on the part of the State government to blame the Centre without having a clear idea on how to go about implementing the BCs quota in the forthcoming local body elections, he maintained and said that even if the quota is inserted into the Ninth Schedule, it can still come under the judicial review as was made clear in the 1973 Kesavanand Bharati case by the SC.

Former West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh says party did not invite him to PM rally, gives it a miss
Dilip Ghosh, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, remained absent from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's event in the State on Friday, claiming the party 'did not invite' him. 'The party cadre had called me to attend the rally. But the party did not invite me. Maybe they do not want me there; it would make them uncomfortable. So, I will not go to the Prime Minister's rally. I am going to Delhi instead, for some work related to the party,' Mr Ghosh told media persons at the Kolkata airport before departing for Delhi. In Delhi, he was seen going to the residence of national BJP president JP Nadda, and leaving in a few minutes. Meanwhile, on the same day, in West Bengal's Durgapur, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated key development projects and attended a party rally. Mr. Ghosh has notably remained absent from important party events and rallies in the recent past, including events attended by Prime Minister Modi at Alipurduar and Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata this year. His absence on Friday assumes significance considering the upcoming Martyrs' Day rally by the Trinamool on July 21. Speculations are rife that Mr Ghosh is potentially joining Trinamool. Amid reports of a souring relationship between Mr. Ghosh and the State BJP leadership, the newly appointed West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya had reached out to Mr Ghosh on July 8 this year. After their in-person meeting, Mr. Bhattacharya described Mr. Ghosh as the 'heart and soul' of the party, while Mr. Ghosh said that he will follow instructions from the party leadership like any other party worker. Mr. Ghosh is a senior leader of the BJP in the State and has served as a national vice president and State president of the BJP. Under his leadership, the BJP had won 18 out of the State's 42 Lok Sabha seats in 2019. He was earlier elected as an MP from Medinipur in 2019 and an MLA from Kharagpur Sadar in 2016. In May this year, Mr. Ghosh drew criticism from the BJP when he met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the inauguration of the Digha Jagannath Temple. The erstwhile State BJP President, Sukanta Majumder, was quick to clarify to the media that the party had decided not to attend the temple inauguration, and Mr, Ghosh's presence was in his personal capacity.
