Retaining walls to be built at three spots on Kollegal road
ERODE: The State Highways (SH) department will construct retaining walls at three landslide-prone areas on the Anthiyur-Bargur-Kollegal road in Erode district. This has been necessitated by landslides on the stretch during rains late last year. The department has decided to complete these works by December. The project cost is Rs 2.2 crore. The Anthiyur-Bargur-Kollegal road is one of the main routes to Karnataka and is used mostly at night when the Dhimbam hill pass is closed for vehicles at night to protect wildlife. The Dhimbam ghat road (NH 948) passes through the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) and connects Tamil Nadu with Karnataka state. A senior official of the State Highways department said, "All vehicles, including heavy vehicles, pass on that road. The traffic on that road is very busy at all times. Landslides occurred at kilometres 15, 17 and 19 due to heavy rains last November. We repaired the landslide areas by placing sandbags. But it's not a permanent solution. To permanently prevent landslides from occurring in those locations, retaining walls will be constructed. The Tamil Nadu government has given an administrative sanction. The work will begin soon." Speaking to TNIE, C Rajesh Kanna, Assistant Divisional Engineer of SH, said, "These retaining walls will be constructed for a total length of 220 metres. The tender process is currently underway. The work will begin within a month. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of December. Two days ago we inspected the places where the retaining walls are to be constructed."

Rs 13.5 crore sanctioned for Pattabiram road overbridge, work likely to finish in three months
CHENNAI: Nearly nine months after one arm of the Pattabiram road overbridge (ROB) was opened to traffic, the second arm remains unfinished, inconveniencing motorists and posing a safety risk to local residents on the busy Chennai-Tirupati NH 205. TNIE has learnt that the government has now sanctioned Rs 13.5 crore to complete the remaining portion of the ROB. Officials from the State Highways (NABARD & Rural Roads) maintained that there has been no delay and that work is progressing as planned. 'In coordination with the Railways, we expect to complete the remaining work within two to three months. The ROB was constructed under extremely challenging conditions,' said an official. The operational arm, inaugurated on September 25, 2024, having 5.5m width with three lanes, has been adapted for two-way traffic by introducing a central median. This temporary arrangement facilitates vehicle movement on the Pattabiram-Thiruninravur stretch of the Chennai-Tirupati NH. Although only about 100m of work is pending, NABARD and rural road wing of the state highways have delayed the project allegedly due to issues in cost escalation and design. The proposed ROB, spanning 780m in length and 11m in width, was designed as a six-lane carriageway and was supposed to replace the level crossing between Pattabiram and Pattabiram Military Siding stations. A total of Rs 78.35 crore was allocated for the project in 2022 and utilised.

NHAI's annual pass could reduce cost of travel on highways for private vehicles
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced an annual pass that will allow those using private vehicles to take 200 trips a year on national highways and expressways. By paying ₹3,000, one can make trips for one year or make 200 trips (whichever comes first) without the need to recharge. Virender Sambyal, Regional Officer, NHAI, Chennai, said that it would be applicable only to private cars, jeeps, and vans. 'At toll plazas on expressways, State Highways managed by State governments or local bodies, and parking lots and malls, the regular Fastag will continue to operate,' he said. 'The annual pass, which will come into force on August 15, can be activated only through the Rajmargyatra mobile app or on the NHAI website. It will be activated on the existing Fastag ID,' he said. Each time a vehicle crosses a toll plaza, it will be counted as one trip. For example, if a person takes a private vehicle from Chennai to Tiruchi, it will be counted as seven trips, as there are seven toll plazas on that stretch. A round trip would be counted as 14 trips. Under Fastag, a return trip to Tiruchi would cost ₹990 and 10 return trips would cost ₹9,900. With this annual pass, it would only take 140 trips and a potential saving of up to ₹6,900. Once the 200 trips are over, the users can recharge.

Gujarat CM Orders Urgent Road Repairs Amid Monsoon Damage
Gandhinagar: With heavy monsoon rains lashing Gujarat and damaging roads across the state, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed authorities to carry out repair and restoration work on a war footing. In a high-level meeting held in Gandhinagar with senior officials from relevant departments, Patel emphasised that road repair work must begin immediately, without waiting for the rains to stop. Reviewing the condition of rural, urban, and highway roads - including National Highways, State Highways, and Panchayat-owned roads - the Chief Minister called the road network the 'backbone of development' and stressed its vital role in daily civilian life. 'Not a single dry day should go wasted. Even holidays must be utilised to speed up the work,' Patel said, adding that contractors must be held accountable for poor work, especially if the damage has occurred within the defect liability period. He underlined that quality should not be compromised under any circumstances. The meeting was attended by municipal commissioners via video conference. The Chief Minister instructed civic bodies to carry out emergency repairs in areas facing problems like road damage, waterlogging, and underpass flooding. He also urged long-term planning to prevent the recurrence of such issues. Patel called for seamless coordination between various agencies, including the NHAI, Road Construction Department, Panchayats, and Municipal Corporations. He directed field engineers - superintendents, executives, and deputy engineers - to visit affected sites immediately and initiate on-the-spot repairs. According to a presentation by the Road Construction Department, major repair and structural work are currently underway on around 243 bridges across the state. Diversions are being managed and continuously monitored to ensure traffic flow. NHAI officials briefed the Chief Minister that of the 83 km of National Highway damaged during this monsoon season, repair work has been completed on 58 km. The remaining 25 km is expected to be restored soon. Patel reiterated the government's commitment to restoring public infrastructure swiftly and maintaining high standards. 'People's lives should not be disrupted due to delays in road repair. Departments must act with urgency and responsibility,' he said.
