BBC Breakfast star warned by friend she was becoming too 'fame-obsessed'
BBC Breakfast's Steph McGovern has said her friend was forced to have a word with her after she started to let the fame of being a TV presenter get to her. The 43-year-old stepped into the broadcasting role at the Beeb after first answering the phones for Radio 4's Money Box while at university. She went on to become a current affairs researcher at the BBC and then the producer of the financial news on the Today programme, before stepping in front of the camera for BBC Breakfast. The ex-business reporter and host of former Channel 4 show Steph's Packed Lunch has now spoken about the effect that being recognised in public had on her early in her career. McGovern told The Times she 'fell for' the buzz of presenting and the fame that came with her position, so much so her friend Rach ended up saying something. She told the publication: 'I was in a restaurant not long after I'd got the job and a group of blokes sent over a bottle of champagne to my table, like, 'Whey! Doing it for the northerners'. 'People were always getting photos and stuff, which was really lovely, but my mate was like, 'You are turning into a bit of a nob'. 'Everywhere we went I was, 'Ooh, I wonder if I'll get recognised'. And she'd be like, 'Ah, shut up. Come on'. When she said it I thought, 'I don't want to be a TV nob'. And I went, 'You're right'.' More Trending McGovern also spoke about being more careful about what she shares online now, ever since she discovered she had a stalker while presenting on the BBC. The presenter says she was 'oversharing' at the time and now never discusses her partner and doesn't post her location or photos of her house. McGovern's flagship Channel 4 daytime show came to an end in 2023, after the broadcaster axed it due to low viewership. View More » Since then, she appeared in Netflix's Celebrity Bear Hunt, which pitted a bunch of celebs against the wiles of Bear Grylls and saw McGovern finish a finalist. She also hosts The Rest Is Money podcast with Robert Peston. Got a story? Steph McGovern reveals chilling act from deranged stalker that forced her to call security
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) STEPH McGovern revealed the chilling moment that forced her to take action against a deranged stalker. The television star, 43, appeared on today's This Morning and revealed her stalker experience has influenced part of her debut novel, Deadline. 2 Steph McGovern opened up about her stalker ordeal Credit: ITV Telling hosts Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley about her ordeal, Steph explained that the man never caused her harm but his delusions became increasingly concerning. The man fell in love with her, believing she was addressing him directly through the TV screen whenever she was speaking to viewers in general. It all got too much when he somehow got hold of her parents' address and wrote to her dad asking for permission to marry her. She explained: "My dad rang me and said, 'Steph, who's this fella you're seeing?' "He talked to my dad about being in a relationship with me and he kind of asked for my hand in marriage." When Ben revealed his surprise that the man had managed to get the address, Steph continued: "That's what freaked me out. At that point it's very different from having someone being there at broadcasting things to finding your parents address and writing to them. "That panicked me because I thought my mum and dad are going to be dead worried here. "That's when it all kicked in and the BBC security team did their thing." No charges were ever brought against the stalker. Steph has been busy ever since Channel 4 axed her daytime show, Steph's Packed Lunch, in December 2023. Watch the moment Bear Hunt star Shirley Ballas furiously clashes with Mel B in heated row Not only has she written a novel, she also starred in Bear Grylls' hit Netflix reality show, Celebrity Bear Hunt. It pushed her to the limit and in one terrifying incident she ended up bashing her face off a cliff face. Medics scrambled to help her as she helplessly hung from her safety harness while host Holly Willoughby watched on with concern. Speaking exclusively to The Sun earlier this year, Steph said: "We had these amazing medics and everything. There was a moment where I literally fell off a cliff and smashed into a wall. "You will see, it was pretty scary. When I got pulled back off the cliff, I saw everyone's face and I thought, 'oh', and then Holly is like, 'Oh my goodness'. "I was just hanging there looking at... There was blood dripping off my face. "I didn't overthink it. I just thought, they're not going to let me die. "It was fine, it wasn't a big deal, it wasn't broken. They were just kind of checking me that I didn't have a concussion. I was a bit mad. You know these things sometimes that look more dramatic than they actually are?" In difficult-to-watch moments, Steph fell from a ledge during a challenge and swung towards the sheer rockface. The impact was heavy and she repeatedly shouted "Ow!". Co-star Big Zuu could be heard asking if she was alright as Holly reassured him medics were on their way to help.

‘Drugs alone not the answer', says top GP as he talks about weight loss jabs
A leading GP and TV medic has told fitness industry professionals gathered in Bolton that drugs alone are not the way to fight obesity. Dr Hussain Al-Zubaidi, a regular guest on Channel 4's "Steph's Packed Lunch" and the lifestyle and physical activity lead for the Royal College of General Practitioners, shared this sentiment at a professional development event for the health, fitness, and wellbeing sector. He was addressing the professionals, at the Bolton Arena Community Sports Village, on the roll-out of GLP-1 drugs, sometimes referred to colloquially as fat jabs or fat pills. These medicines, which can be taken as tablets or injections, are used to treat type 2 diabetes and can aid weight loss by reducing a patient's appetite. Dr Al-Zubaidi said: "The roll-out of GLP-1s within primary care is very much the hot topic at the moment. "It is going to transform how we deliver primary care – and a lot of other things. "As we roll out GLP-1 therapies in primary care, we must resist the temptation to settle for the minimal scalable model of lifestyle support. "I was emphasising that people deserve better than that. "Our patients deserve a comprehensive, multi-component approach – nutrition, behavioural and psychological support, sleep and stress management, physical activity, and addiction care all working in harmony." His remarks come during an ongoing debate within the fitness sector about the role of GLP-1s in addressing obesity. The event was hosted by the LFX network in partnership with GM Active, a group made up of 12 leisure and community organisations – including Bolton Arena – that manage most publicly owned leisure and physical activity facilities on behalf of the 10 authorities across Greater Manchester. GM Active chair, Andy King, said: "It's not often a 'moment in time' occurs that you know will be considered a 'turning point' in the future, yet this event will be one of those, I am sure. "Thanks to the LFX network, GM Active is set fair to really understand how we can support those people who, through one way or another, have opted to utilise these tools to assist them to lose weight and help them to sustain their gains for the longer term through pragmatic and people-centred, wrap-around support." Neil Hutchinson, managing director of Bolton Arena Community Sports Village, said: "We've been working on a new health and wellbeing strategy for Bolton over the last six months, so I was keen to host this event and be at the front of this discussion. "We aim to be on the front foot with this in Bolton and ready to support local GPs and primary care in this revolutionary healthcare development."

Strictly's John Whaite claims he's lost big supermarket collaboration over OnlyFans work
Strictly Come Dancing finalist John Whaite took aim at Waitrose in a post on social media recently, with him saying that his work with the brand had seemingly disappeared Former TV star John Whaite has hit out at Waitrose in a post on social media, suggesting that his work with the supermarket chain appeared to disappear after he posted content on OnlyFans. John, 35, is best known for his on-screen work, having appeared on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing since he won the Great British Bake Off in 2012. More recently, he joined OnlyFans in 2022 and, following a break from it, it was announced earlier this year that he had rejoined the platform. The baker now posts content on the adult subscription platform again. John has previously said that he's decided to focus on the venture and his baking business, Ruff Puff Brownies, since leaving the TV industry in recent years. In a post on Instagram over the weekend, John suggested that collaborations with Waitrose had been "expunged" due to his work on OnlyFans. He said in a video on Saturday: "A few of you have asked where my recipes have gone from the Waitrose website and I can't be certain. I don't quite know." John continued: "They are all seemingly gone off the website and off YouTube. It seems like my history's been expunged. And I don't know why. But I can hazard a guess." He went on to say in the video: "I mean, let's face it, the Waitrose brand is very heavily centred on missionary vanilla and middle class guilt, isn't it? Yeah, moral panic is one of their values as well. So I guess ... I guess it speaks volumes." John said: "If you're looking for one of my recipes or something that I make go to Ruff Puff Brownies or my ... I don't know where my recipes are these days, probably all been expunged. But if you're looking for an overpriced quiche or a sandwich that tastes like regret, pop to Waitrose." The former Steph's Packed Lunch star included a lengthy caption alongside the video message last week. He wrote in the caption: "It seems Waitrose have diverted all my recipe links to similar recipes by other people - my work history with them ostensibly expunged. My catalogue of YouTube videos with them has also disappeared. "It's like I never existed. No one at Waitrose informed me or told me why… I can only guess that it's because I do OnlyFans. So I'm sorry if you wanted to use one of my recipes and now cannot." John concluded: "Look, I get my OF work doesn't align with their brand, and I would have accepted that had they treated me with an ounce of human respect, but to wipe out an entire collection of very hard work without any notice or chance to save the recipes first is an insult. #AlwaysPreferedAldiAnyway #BitternessIsInFor2025." Approached for comment, a Waitrose spokesperson told the Mirror this evening that it "regularly" reviews recipes on its website. They added that they are "very grateful" for the work John has previously done for the brand. A Waitrose spokesperson told us: "We regularly review recipes on our site, we are constantly updating and refreshing. We are very grateful for the work John has done for us."

GBBO and Strictly star John Whaite joins adult content site OnlyFans
TV star John Whaite has joined the explicit adult content site OnlyFans after turning his back on TV. Whaite, 34, best known for winning the third series of The Great British Bake Off in 2012 and later appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, is offering 'solo' or 'collaborative' content from £10 subscriptions per month, or £27 for a three-month package. The profile, which has 116 posts so far, sees a photograph of the TV star lying face-down on a bed in the nude. The caption reads: 'The side of me you haven't seen… yet'. Whaite is pursuing OnlyFans alongside his successful baking business, Ruff Puff Brownies, which he runs with his husband Paul Atkins. The couple sell hand-baked goods in batches, which regularly sell out due to the demand from their 38,000 followers. His sign-up to OnlyFans comes after Steph McGovern's Steph's Packed Lunch show, which Whaite would make regular appearances on, was cancelled in 2023 after three years on air. He told MailOnline in a recent interview that he is turning his focus away from the TV industry and towards business. 'Since leaving the TV industry, I decided to focus on business. Now I run two fairly successful and exciting businesses,' he told the publication. 'One sells brownies and cookies while the other is a meatier enterprise. If you want to buy my sweet treats head to Ruff Puff Brownies and if you want to buy my meat head to my OnlyFans page.' The chef made Strictly history in 2021 as one half of the BBC show's first ever same-sex male couple with professional dancer Johannes Radebe, and the pair reached the final together. Whaite, who married his long-term partner Atkins in February 2024, admitted after leaving the dancing competition that he 'fell in love' with his dance partner Johannes Radebe. 'I can't speak for [Radebe] – because I'm not allowed to, legally – but it felt like there was love here,' he added. Whaite revealed that he discussed his feelings with Atkins and that the pair briefly took some time apart, explaining that 'Paul of all people deserved to understand how I was feeling'. 'You go through life being told that you'll fall in love with someone, you'll get married, you'll have children and that's it,' he said. 'But love can't just be directed to one person. The heart can easily split into two or three or four. And those loves aren't mutually exclusive.' After the couple reunited following their brief split, Whaite decided to keep his distance from Radebe, explaining: 'If it would be tricky for Paul for me to be in contact with Johannes, then it's a sacrifice that I have to make.' Radebe addressed Whaite's revelation shortly after the interview, noting that he was 'keen' to emphasise 'the platonic nature of their connection'. 'We have gone on to have such a beautiful experience together that it would be a shame if we were not friends after all that,' he told The Times. 'What we agreed is that, regardless of what life throws at us, we will always keep [this friendship] going. 'We are friends for life,' I always say to him. 'I know where you live. You cannot get rid of me.' I still speak to him.'
