Florida man sentenced for targeting elderly Pennsylvania residents as part of burglary spree

A Florida man will spend the next 2 ½ to 20 years in state prison for his role in targeting elderly western Pennsylvania residents as part of a burglary spree. Steve Nichols, 57, previously pleaded guilty to seven burglaries across Butler, Erie, Indiana, Lackawanna and Westmoreland counties, and was recently sentenced in Butler County, according to a media release from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Nichols' son, Archie Marino, was also charged in the scheme. An investigation found that Nichols was part of a burglary team that posed as utility workers to deceive and distract homeowners. "The defendant was the engineer of this criminal conduct, intentionally targeting older Pennsylvanians because he felt they were more vulnerable to be duped," Attorney General Dave Sunday said. The investigation also found that many victims were in their 80s and home alone during the crimes. One man from the team was in charge of distracting homeowners while another would scour the homes for cash, jewelry, coins and other valuables. The Office of Attorney General Organized Crime Section analyzed bank, rental car, and cellphone records, as well as video from doorbell cameras. "My office is committed to holding fully accountable those who threaten the sanctity of our homes. This case should serve as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant when contacted by people they do not know," Sunday said.

Time Finance appoints new head of operations in asset finance team

UK-based specialist lender Time Finance has appointed Bethan Holliday as the new head of operations for its asset finance team. The move aligns with the independent lender's goal to expand its reach to more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with business finance and increase its lending book to £300m ($401.7m). Holliday brings more than 20 years of experience in financial services, having previously held a senior role at Ultimate Finance. In her new position, she will oversee the operations of the asset finance team, focusing on reviewing systems and optimising processes to enhance the efficiency of business finance for SMEs. Time Finance said that her role is key in ensuring top-tier service to brokers, a core component of the lender's growth strategy and its £300m lending target. Time Finance's asset finance managing director Steve Nichols said: 'I am thrilled Bethan has decided to join Time Finance. Her arrival is at a key time for the business as we embark on our new three-year strategic plan whilst continuing to deliver sustainable growth. 'Bethan will play a key role in making the business more efficient, helping to develop our automation capabilities with the rest of the leadership team, as we strive to offer consistently great service to our brokers, customers, and suppliers.' Speaking on her appointment, Holliday added: 'I am excited to join Time Finance as the business accelerates its growth journey. Having long regarded Time Finance as a challenger and innovator in this industry, to join the team was an opportunity I could not turn down.' Time Finance reported a record gross lending book of £217m for the financial year ending 31 May 2025, marking its 16th consecutive quarter of growth. The company attributed its success to a focus on secured, own-book lending to UK businesses, which led to an 8% increase in lending volumes. Invoice finance and asset finance accounted for more than 90% of new lending volume and now make up 83% of the total lending book. For the FY24/25, Time Finance's revenue increased by 11% to £37m while profit before tax rose by 34% to £7.9m. The profit before tax margin also improved by 300 basis points to 21%, with net tangible assets growing by 14% to £44.1m. Holliday's appointment also follows recent additions to Time Finance's team, including Terry Wolfendale as head of sales and Paul Rice as business development manager, to bolster its invoice finance offering. White tiger saved from Ukraine war given new home in Lincolnshire

Officials at a wildlife park say they are hopeful a refugee white tiger will arrive before the school summer holidays after DPD stepped in to deliver Wildlife Park said the tiger, called Aleks, was found abandoned by medics and army volunteers in Ukraine last year and was dehydrated, infested with parasites and receiving medical treatment, he is now waiting to be delivered to his new home at the park near Nichols, the park's chief executive, said: "I hope someone is in to sign for him. If they take a delivery picture and leave him near our bins it might give the neighbours a shock." The charity said it was first asked to rehome the tiger about six months ago and staff were "buzzing" for the arrival of the "special animal"."When they found him in the war zone, they thought he was dead. He's just been left and couldn't walk or eat. Now he's pulled through and is coming here," Mr Nichols said."It's going to be something really special for us and for the park. He'll be the first white tiger to go on show to the public in Lincolnshire. We're just so excited to see him."In preparation for the tiger's arrival, the park launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the £100,000 cost of building a new park, which is already home to three Bengal tigers, is planning to create a new medical ward, swimming pool, play frame and Nichols added: "It's even going to have underfloor heating. It's going to be proper posh but these animals deserve it."
