The Golden Bachelor's Mel Owens Offers Mea Culpa for ‘Insensitive' Comments About Older Women: ‘I've Learned a Lot'
The new star of The Golden Bachelor was a little tarnished by recent comments he made about dating older women, but he's trying to make amends. In a new interview with Glamour, Mel Owens — who is set to star in the second season of ABC's senior dating competition — confronts the backlash he received when he said in a podcast interview in June that he'd eliminate any contestants age 60 or older. (Owens is 66, for the record.) More from TVLine Matt Damon and Ken Jennings Risk It All on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - But Did They Win Big? ABC Moves Up Premiere Date for 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville and Grey's Anatomy Joshua Jackson Admits He's 'Bummed Out' by Doctor Odyssey Cancellation: 'It Was a Really Fun Show' Owens is now backtracking on those comments, saying they 'were a mistake by me. It's unfair. It's insensitive… and I want to earn it back.' Owens is currently two weeks into shooting his season of The Golden Bachelor, and he reveals he apologized to the women as well: 'When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.'' The women on Owens' season are in their 60s, he says, and he was 'absolutely shocked' at how 'active' and 'brilliant' they are. (ABC has not yet revealed the women competing in Mel's season.) They also got a little revenge on him, he hints: 'One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal. They were killing me… It was good because I earned that, and I took it and I deserved it, and it landed squarely on me.' Owens blames his controversial comments on his lack of familiarity with the show: 'I didn't know the age range because I wasn't watching it. I'm thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I'm thinking that's the gold years for me.' He also says he preferred younger women because 'my reference… was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue.' He hopes fans who wrote off the show after his comments will give it another chance: 'Hopefully the show will show that the women that are in their golden years, that are doing these amazing things. It's inspirational.' The experience so far has been 'life-altering' for him, he adds: 'I've learned a lot.' Owens' season of The Golden Bachelor premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8/7c on ABC. Paramore's Hayley Williams just dropped 17 new songs — including the anthem track 'True Believer' — but don't call it an album
Williams previously released the solo projects 'Petals for Armor' in 2020 and 'Flowers for Vases' in 2021. Paramore's frontwoman Hayley Williams dropped 17 new singles to streaming platforms on Friday, after a week of teasing fans with chaotic and cryptic marketing. At the Newport Folk Festival on July 26, Williams gave a surprise performance of one of the new tracks, 'Mirtazapine,' and then debuted the song exclusively on Nashville Public Radio. Then, on Monday, July 28, Williams quietly uploaded all 17 of the songs to a password-protected website, which fans could access using a code included with a recently released hair dye from her brand, Good Dye Young. Roughly 24 hours later, the tracks were taken down without explanation, replaced with a simple message: 'Thank you for listening.' The untitled project, which Williams released under her new label 'Post Atlantic' — a possible nod to Paramore ending its run with Atlantic Records — was released as individual singles on major streaming platforms without an official announcement, cover art or tracklist. Williams's Instagram feed reveals the individual credits for each of the songs. Collaborators on the project include producer Daniel James and Jim-E Stack, musicians Brian Robert Jones and Joey Howard. The relative lack of promotion around the new tracks hasn't stopped fans from celebrating them online. One in particular, 'True Believer' — which functions as a scathing takedown of both Southern Christian hypocrisy and the gentrification of Nashville, Williams's hometown — made the rounds on TikTok before the project's official drop. Many applauded the bold, provocative lyrics that reference Billie Holiday's 'Strange Fruit,' a song about lynchings in the South. Other notable tracks include 'Discovery Channel,' which samples the Bloodhound Gang's innuendo-filled 'The Bad Touch,' from 1999, and 'Glum,' that features lyrics like 'Do you ever feel so alone/That you could implode and no one would know?' Some of the new songs have raised questions about whether Williams has split from her boyfriend, Paramore guitarist Taylor York, who she began dating in 2022. Some fans are pointing to songs like 'Disappearing Man' — which includes the lines 'Now, love, you're not the only one who's lonely/My final act of love was surrender' — as confirmation of the breakup. The big question looming in the background of this new project is whether Paramore itself might be splitting up. The band opened for Taylor Swift in 2023 and 2024, during which time its website was wiped, leaving some fans concerned. However, the reason for shedding its online presence had to do with the end of their contract with Atlantic Records, not the end of the band itself. Though Williams may be working on solo stuff at the moment, there's no reason to suspect that it means the end of the band, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of its first album, All We Know Is Falling, on July 26. Williams has previously released two solo projects: Petals for Armor in 2020 and Flowers for Vases in 2021. Solve the daily Crossword

'The Naked Gun': Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson revive dumb comedy — and it's great
Neeson and Anderson deliver laugh-out-loud performances in the fresh reboot, directed by Akiva Schaffer With the release of The Naked Gun (now in theatres), starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, comes renewed faith in movie remakes. While several reimagined versions of older films feel tired, The Naked Gun has the opposite impact, giving the audience full belly laughs with its comedy. Directed by Akiva Schaffer, the film leans into being goofy and stupid, hitting punchline after punchline, and it's incredibly appealing. It's all elevated by Neeson and Anderson being the perfect pairing, in complete harmony on screen. The Naked Gun release date: Aug. 1Director: Akiva SchafferWriters: Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Akiva SchafferCast: Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, with Danny HustonRuntime: 85 minutes What is 'The Naked Gun' about? Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson) is following in his father's footsteps, Frank Drebin, the role originated by Leslie Nielsen in the 1982 TV show Police Squad! Drebin Jr.'s partner is Ed Hocken Jr. (Paul Walter Hauser), son of Capt. Ed Hocken, previously played by George Kennedy. They're investigating the possible murder of an engineer found dead in an electric car, the vehicle invented by tech billionaire Richard Cane (Danny Huston). The dead man's sister is Beth Davenport (Pamela Anderson), a true crime writer who wants to involve herself in the investigation into her brother's death. Made for the laughs With Schaffer coming from Lonely Island fame, it's not surprising that the director was able to really lean into silly and outrageous comedy for The Naked Gun, with great success. Physical comedy, nudity, pop culture jokes and satire are all used to make the film a bundle of laughs. It's been a while since we've had a theatrical release of a film that's really been crafted for comedy, and it feels like a breath of fresh air. What it comes down to is how the film leans into what we'll lovingly call dumb humour, but it doesn't treat the audience like dumb people. It's intentional, the film has a lot of self-awareness, but it's an invitation to really relish in the fun. Even more impressive, The Naked Gun doesn't feel repetitive at all. It feels new and fresh, but it's also a thoughtful homage to the history of the franchise. Neeson is absolutely spectacular in the film. His execution of lines with a deadpan delivery, to being completely exuberant in other moments, is incredibly fun to watch. Anderson as a hilarious femme fatale is also a highlight, and she's never been funnier. Completely taking charge of every hysterical beat for the character. With rumours swirling about Neeson and Anderson dating, that's easy to believe when you see their chemistry in The Naked Gun, with the actors completely in sync. While having some peaks and valleys in terms of a few lagging moments in the film, The Naked Gun is one of the most joyous movie theatres experiences you'll have all year. It reminds us that sometimes you just need to have a big laugh.
