Padres Outfield Trade Rumors Heating Up As Deadline Approaches

The San Diego Padres have a massive hole in left field. Fernando Tatis Jr. mans right field with superstar potential. Jackson Merrill is one of the best young center fielders in baseball. But left field has been a revolving door of below-average play in San Diego.
Because of this, the Padres have been linked to numerous big trades to fill that void. The most common name mentioned closely with San Diego is Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran, but it's unclear if there's anything brewing between the two teams.
If that idea falls through, ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Padres as one of the "best fits" in a trade for Cleveland Guardians star Steven Kwan.

"An All-Star the past two years and Gold Glove winner in all three of his previous big league seasons, Kwan is a do-everything left fielder with elite bat-to-ball skills and two years of club control after 2025," Passan wrote. "Cleveland doesn't want to deal him, but with a dearth of available bats, the Guardians at the very least will listen to see whether teams are willing to blow them away with offers."
It's unclear whether the Guardians are looking to trade Kwan this year, but if they are, it would likely take a large haul to land him. The Padres have a few top prospects who are likely untouchable, but beyond the top two or three prospects, San Diego could move anybody to land Kwan.
This idea could make sense if the Padres are willing to give up multiple star prospects, but it doesn't make as much sense as a trade for Duran.
The Guardians don't have much reason to trade Kwan, considering he has multiple years of affordable team control left on his deal.

Padres Might Have To Get Creative To Address Needs With Expiring Contracts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The San Diego Padres just dipped under the luxury tax threshold this season, but with their payroll projected by Fangraphs to land in the second tier, they face a 12% surcharge on their payroll next season. This makes Alden Gonzalez of ESPN believe that the Padres might have to do some flipping to address their needs at the trade deadline. WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 18: Dylan Cease #84 of the San Diego Padres pitches against the Washington Nationals during the first inning at Nationals Park on July 18, 2025 in Washington, DC. Photo byThe Padres have three specific needs: a left fielder, a catcher, and an end-of-rotation starter. With little wiggle room on the payroll and after taking significant hits to their farm system in trades the last few seasons, they may have to flip major league assets for the pieces they need. The Padres have a couple of valuable players who could be free agents after the season, including starting pitcher Dylan Cease. Cease is set to become a free agent this offseason and has had the season that he had hoped for. While he is striking out more batters per nine innings than last season, he has given up more runs and has seen his ERA grow by a run from last year. If the Padres do not envision themselves extending Cease, another team could be interested in the former Cy Young candidate. Luis Arráez is also a pending free agent, and while he is still hitting for a high average, his bat has taken a step backward this season. If Padres general manager AJ Preller needs to, he could use Arráez as a chip to get the pieces that he needs to contend for the National League pennant. With the deadline looming and the Padres holding a playoff spot, Preller is likely to wheel and deal to put the finishing touches on his championship contender. Braves Catcher Listed As Best Available By MLB Insider As Deadline Nears
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Atlanta Braves are falling well out of playoff contention, and they are looking to get back to October next year at the trade deadline. In the meantime, they are looking to move expendable assets while holding on to multi-year players, but Mark Feinsand has their catcher Sean Murphy as the best catcher at the deadline, despite his long-term contract. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 12: Sean Murphy #12 of the Atlanta Braves hits three-run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth inning at Busch Stadium on July 12, 2025 in St... ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 12: Sean Murphy #12 of the Atlanta Braves hits three-run home run against the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth inning at Busch Stadium on July 12, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. More Photo byMurphy is one of the best offensive catchers in the game and has a Gold Glove along with it. With 16 home runs and a 133 OPS+, and a contract through 2029, Murphy would not only take the reins behind the dish this season, but he would be the catcher of the future. The Braves are focusing on returning to the playoffs next year and are set on keeping their controllable players, but everyone could be available at the right price. Thanks to the emergence of Drake Baldwin, the Braves have a pair of catchers who both demand playing time with their performance alone. The Braves could be comfortable letting one go. This could be a decision the Braves make after the season ends to allow themselves to confirm what they are seeing from Baldwin and that he is ready to take on the full workload of a starting catcher. If the Braves make the call to ship off Murphy, the Padres are an attractive candidate with their major league assets they could bring back in return for the backstop. The Padres need a catcher, and the Braves could take advantage of their surplus. More MLB: Royals Reportedly Willing To Trade, Looking To Compete Next Year
