Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Prince William paid tribute to soccer star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva after they died in a car crash in Spain. The Prince of Wales, as patron of the Football Association (F.A.), English soccer's governing body, will have an acute understanding of what Jota's family are going through after his own mother, Princess Diana, died in a Paris car crash when he was 15. The prince said he was "deeply saddened" by the tragedy in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday. Moreand Chris Brunskill/Fantasista/Getty Images "As part of the footballing family, I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother," Prince William wrote. "Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him." The message, signed with a personal "W," came as soccer fans and players expressed their shock at Jota's death. Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who played with Jota for Portugal, wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. "To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you." In late June, Jota, 28, married Rute Cardoso, his partner of 10 years, who must now mourn her husband while consoling their three children. As part of the footballing family, I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him @LFC @Wolves. W — The Prince and Princess of Wales (@KensingtonRoyal) July 3, 2025 The Lamborghini the brothers were traveling in careered off the road and burst into flames with Spanish police saying in a statement that a tire on the car had burst while they were overtaking at around 12.30 a.m. on Thursday, Reuters reported. William will understand better than most just how traumatic the loss will be for Jota and Cardoso's children after his own mother, Princess Diana, died in a car crash in Paris in August, 1997. While his connection to soccer as patron of the F.A. is the primary reason he paid tribute to the brothers, William also supports Child Bereavement UK, a charity for children who have lost parents. In life, Diana supported the charity too and in 2009 William talked candidly about his grief: "I am incredibly proud to be able to continue her support of such an extraordinary charity by becoming your Royal Patron. "What my mother recognized then—and what I understand now—is that losing a close family member is one of the hardest experiences that anyone can ever endure. "Never being able to say the word 'mummy' again in your life sounds like a small thing. However, for many, including me, it is now really just a word—hollow and evoking only memories. "I can therefore wholeheartedly relate to the Mother's Day Campaign as I too have felt—and still feel—the emptiness on such a day as Mother's Day. "The Child Bereavement Charity reaches out to people, working closely with families to provide support and counseling at the time when they most need it in their lives." Prince William opens up about youngest son Prince Louis' difficult decision
Prince William visited a youth centre in Edinburgh during a royal engagement, where he revealed his son Prince Louis's difficult decision Prince William brought laughter during his recent royal visit. The Prince of Wales took a trip to Scotland to visit the Leith Community Centre, in Edinburgh, where he shared heartfelt details about his youngest son, Prince Louis, and spoke about a challenging decision his son will have to face someday. While visiting the non-profit organisation Street Soccer Scotland on Wednesday, Prince William warmly engaged with locals - taking time to chat and connect with them. One amusing moment in particular was when he was shown a hilarious picture of one of the women at the centre dressed up as the Hanlon Stevenson mascot, Percy, for a fundraising event. The image left William in fits of laughter, before he went on to play football with the locals and even scored a goal. After the cheers, he joked: "That's it, I'm done now." He also watched flamenco dancing and unveiled a new Royal Foundation Community Impact project. William met Erin, nine and Shaniah, ten, who held a Youth Forum at Edinburgh City Council Chambers to discuss their concerns about the block of flats where they lived. The Prince praised the young girls for their public speaking, saying: "Wow, it's not easy standing up and speaking. It takes a lot of courage, well done." Erin then gifted the prince of Wales an Aston Villa Football Club poster which sparked up the discussion of his youngest son Louis. William asked Erin what team she supports, and she replied that she supports two teams, and William revealed that Prince Louis was torn between his favourite football teams at the moment. He explained: "My youngest at the moment says he supports five different football teams." At just seven years old, Louis has plenty of time to decide his favourite team, even if his current indecision contrasts with his fathers. Prince William is a well-known Aston Villa supporter and his eldest son Prince George is also a fan of the team often joining his dad at matches. Prince William previously spoke to the BBC in 2015, about his love for Aston Villa. He said: "A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn't want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams. I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments." The royal visited the community centre as part of the Royal Foundation's Community Impact Programme, which aims to "provide lasting impact and legacy in the communities Their Royal Highnesses visits." During the visit he met with Street Soccer Scotland founder and CEO David Duke, who is also a strong supporter of William's Homewards work. The partnership will support Street Soccer Scotland to assist individuals facing challenges such as mental health issues, addiction and homelessness.

Prince William lets slip to Edinburgh locals Louis' support for five teams
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info During an unexpected solo trip to Scotland, Prince William revealed that young Prince Louis already cheers for five football teams - and he entertained the idea of Scottish national footballer John McGinn joining him on a future visit. While in Leith on Wednesday to launch a collaboration with a Scottish football charity, the Prince of Wales took part in a training session led by Street Soccer Scotland. This initiative will receive backing from his Royal Foundation, which is set to support various programmes at the charity's facility close to Edinburgh through its Community Impact Project. Additionally, this financial aid from the foundation will contribute to the creation of Leith United – a partnership between the Leith Community Centre and YMCA Edinburgh. Prince William engaged with ten year old YMCA attendee Shaniah Gilgun and was briefed on her and other children's efforts to enhance housing conditions locally. However, sport became the topic of conversation following William's sighting of an Aston Villa poster. The Aston Villa-adoring prince, who often watches matches with his firstborn Prince George, mused to Shaniah: "Maybe I should bring John McGinn... might have to wait till he retires - we'll put it in the pipeline," reports the Scottish Daily Express. With laughter, he continued: "He promised me he would come up and show me around." Furthermore, when querying youngsters about their favourite football squads during his visit to the community centre, William divulged that his youngest child Louis is a fan of "five different teams now". Shaniah later reflected on the praise she received from William regarding her campaign to improve housing. Shaniah revealed that the partnership was confirmed when Prince William mentioned John McGinn, saying, "He said it was a really good thing and that we should keep doing it and only good will come out of it," and she agreed, "When he mentioned John McGinn, I said, 'That's a deal'." This week wasn't just about Royal engagements for Prince William; King Charles also had a chance encounter with David Beckham at the Chelsea Flower Show on Monday, May 19. The pair exchanged pleasantries and even teased a potential joint project. During their visit to the exhibition, Charles and Queen Camilla were greeted by the former Manchester United star and gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh at the Highgrove Shop display, where sales contribute to The King's Foundation. Beckham, who has been an ambassador for the foundation for a year, was delighted to see the royals. Street Soccer Scotland, established by David Duke in Leith in 2009, has since expanded to offer free football-themed training and personal development programmes across Scotland. The charity aims to tackle issues such as poor mental health, addiction, homelessness, and social isolation. With the help of a Royal Foundation grant, Street Soccer Scotland plans to refurbish Leith Community Centre, bolster sports initiatives, extend community outreach efforts, and hire an impact manager for three years to oversee grassroots leaders and foster local partnerships.
