TV fans baffled after one of the 'biggest sitcoms ever' confirms sci-fi spin-off
The Big Bang Theory fans have been left seriously confused after the 'absolutely insane' plot of the upcoming spin-off was finally confirmed. The original sitcom ended in 2019 after 12 years on our screens, but sparked two separate prequel shows – Young Sheldon and George & Mandy's First Marriage. In 2023, bosses announced that another program based on Kevin Sussman's Stuart Bloom was on the way from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, and it has now been greenlit at HBO Max. A string of familiar faces will be getting in on the action, including Denise actress Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn as Bert, and Barry Kripke star John Ross Bowie – while co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady. However, Stuart Fails To Save The Universe will be a huge departure from the usual TBBT that viewers know as it will see the comic book owner travelling through a multiverse and trying to 'restore reality'. The logline, via Variety, reads: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. 'Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). 'Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well.' While it is not clear when Stuart Fails To Save The Universe will premiere, it's fair to say that many were blindsided by the direction of the show, and flocked to social media to unpack the plot. Reddit user MarketingOwn3547 posted: 'I legit can't tell if serious…' 'What? That is so ridiculously divorced from the setting of the original show that I kind of love it. I can only hope that they fully embrace the genre shift and go as weird as they can,' BerksEngineer commented. Alarming-Wish2607 agreed: 'That's absolutely insane. They have earned my attention for at least one or two episodes. If it's bad I owe them nothing.' 'I actually watched all of BBT and mostly enjoyed it. Stuart was fun in very small doses. I can't imagine the character leading a series. This sounds so bad, Lenifilm replied. As Goldman250 added: 'I'm sorry, what the f**k is that plot? I think they might actually be making a show that I'll enjoy.' The Big Bang Theory was hugely popular during the original run, and has gone down as one of the biggest sitcoms in TV history. The upcoming series marks the fourth program in the universe with Chuck sharing in a statement: 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. 'Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory, would have loved, hated, and argued about.' Teasing what to expect while at the Banff World Media Festival last month, he added: 'There's a lot of CGI. More Trending 'There's a lot of special technical stuff. For me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. 'This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I'm completely out of my element, which is what I wanted, which is what I was hoping to do. New 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff confirmed with multiverse plot featuring Stuart Bloom and returning cast
A new spinoff from The Big Bang Theory has been confirmed, with the upcoming series set to feature Stuart Bloom and explore a multiverse storyline. The Big Bang Theory first aired in 2007 and ran for 12 seasons before concluding. The franchise continued with spinoffs including Young Sheldon, which aired for seven seasons, and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, which began in 2024 and has been renewed for a second season. In 2023, reports emerged of a potential spinoff involving comic book store owner Stuart Bloom. Two years later, the project has been officially greenlit at HBO Max, as reported by Variety. The spinoff is titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe and will see Kevin Sussman return as Stuart. Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie will also return in their roles as Denise, Bert, and Barry Kripke. The official synopsis states: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well.' Screenwriter Zak Penn described the series as the type of show 'the characters from Big Bang Theory would watch.' Co-creator Chuck Lorre added, 'There's a lot of CGI.' No official release date has been confirmed, though the spinoff is expected to air on HBO Max in 2026.

The multiverse comes for sitcoms.
Posted Jul 9, 2025 at 7:29 PM UTC The multiverse comes for sitcoms. The Big Bang Theory is getting another spinoff, but this one is a bit weirder. It's called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe , and here's the set-up: 'comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon.' Which means there will be familiar characters... from an alternate universe. No word yet on when the series will premiere.

‘The Big Bang Theory' Spinoff Gets Stuart-Centric Title
EXCLUSIVE: The Big Bang Theory spinoff on Max is untitled no more — and it's good news and bad news for Kevin Sussman's Stuart Bloom character. The series, which remains in development, will be titled Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, Deadline has learned. That puts Stuart at the center of the offshoot but also hints that the beloved sidekick, who could never quite catch a break on Big Bang, may not have better luck on his own. Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, from Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, extends the trend of every Big Bang Theory spinoff being named after its main character(s), following in the footsteps of Young Sheldon and its offshoot Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. 'Sex Lives Of College Girls' Creators Mindy Kaling & Justin Noble React To Max Cancellation: "We Are Living In An Era Where We Need Comedy Badly" It is also is the first title of a Big Bang spinoff that is thematically connected to the moniker of the mothership, The Big Bang Theory, named after a popular theory about the origin of the universe. On Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, Sussman is joined by fellow Big Bang alums Lauren Lapkus, who plays Kevin's girlfriend Denise, Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler) and John Ross Bowie (Barry Kripke). Because the series is still awaiting green light, the quartet are not formally cast in it but have talent holding deals with WBTV with the purpose of starring in the spinoff once it's picked up. The new series is written and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, co-creator, executive producer of Big Bang and all of its spinoffs to date, Zak Penn and Big Bang co-creator Bill Prady. From the moment the Big Bang spinoff was unveiled in April 2023, there has been speculation that it may revolve around Stuart Bloom (Sussman) and his comic book store. While a reliable source of comic relief, the kind-hearted Stuart also was often lonely and depressed as he strived to belong and be part of the Big Bang gang. Things started looking up for him when he met Denise. He also became close friends with Raj in Season 6 of the mothership series.
