TV fans baffled after one of the 'biggest sitcoms ever' confirms sci-fi spin-off

Metro3 days ago
The Big Bang Theory fans have been left seriously confused after the 'absolutely insane' plot of the upcoming spin-off was finally confirmed.
The original sitcom ended in 2019 after 12 years on our screens, but sparked two separate prequel shows – Young Sheldon and George & Mandy's First Marriage.
In 2023, bosses announced that another program based on Kevin Sussman's Stuart Bloom was on the way from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, and it has now been greenlit at HBO Max.
A string of familiar faces will be getting in on the action, including Denise actress Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn as Bert, and Barry Kripke star John Ross Bowie – while co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady.
However, Stuart Fails To Save The Universe will be a huge departure from the usual TBBT that viewers know as it will see the comic book owner travelling through a multiverse and trying to 'restore reality'.
The logline, via Variety, reads: 'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon.
'Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie).
'Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well.'
While it is not clear when Stuart Fails To Save The Universe will premiere, it's fair to say that many were blindsided by the direction of the show, and flocked to social media to unpack the plot.
Reddit user MarketingOwn3547 posted: 'I legit can't tell if serious…'
'What? That is so ridiculously divorced from the setting of the original show that I kind of love it. I can only hope that they fully embrace the genre shift and go as weird as they can,' BerksEngineer commented.
Alarming-Wish2607 agreed: 'That's absolutely insane. They have earned my attention for at least one or two episodes. If it's bad I owe them nothing.'
'I actually watched all of BBT and mostly enjoyed it. Stuart was fun in very small doses. I can't imagine the character leading a series. This sounds so bad, Lenifilm replied.
As Goldman250 added: 'I'm sorry, what the f**k is that plot? I think they might actually be making a show that I'll enjoy.'
The Big Bang Theory was hugely popular during the original run, and has gone down as one of the biggest sitcoms in TV history.
The upcoming series marks the fourth program in the universe with Chuck sharing in a statement: 'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone.
'Something the characters on The Big Bang Theory, would have loved, hated, and argued about.'
Teasing what to expect while at the Banff World Media Festival last month, he added: 'There's a lot of CGI. More Trending
'There's a lot of special technical stuff. For me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different.
'This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I'm completely out of my element, which is what I wanted, which is what I was hoping to do.

'Something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.'

Practical Magic star snubbed by bosses for 2026 sequel as her role is 'recast'

Evan Rachel Wood played Sandra Bullock's character's daughter in the 1998 romantic fantasy movie, but her offer to star in the upcoming sequel in any capacity was declined With Practical Magic confirmed for a sequel in 2026, both of its lead actresses, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. But Evan Rachel Wood, who played Sally's daughter Kylie Owens in the 1998 movie, will not reprise her role, with the actress being spectacularly snubbed by producers. Despite her character still playing a part in the upcoming film, her role has been recast, according to the Westworld star, 37. The actress announced the news on Instagram Stories, typing out a post to explain her absence from the next instalment of the beloved story. ‌ The actress wrote: "I am getting asked about this a lot, so l'll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel. l offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line." ‌ She continued: "I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters." In the movie, her character Kylie and her younger sister Antonia go to live with their aunts after their father dies. But it seems bosses have already picked out Wood's replacement. ‌ Deadline reports that 25-year-old American actress Joey King will take on the role of Kylie Owens. Joey, who portrayed Gypsy Rose Blanchard in Hulu's series The Act, is set to join Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as part of the renewed cast. In February this year, Nicole, 58, remained tight-lipped about the progress of the new film, which is expected to drop in 2026. Chatting with Variety, she said it was "moving ahead rapidly." ‌ But when pressed for details about a script, she told the interviewer: "I'm not answering anymore, you can ask Sandy." Presumably referring to her co-star Sandra Bullock, she added: "I love Sandy!" When asked when she would start shooting, she again refused to answer. Nicole prompted the interviewer to 'ask Sandy, my beautiful Sandy.' When asked if she ever thought she would be doing a sequel to Practical Magic, she cryptically answered: "Well were not doing it yet," adding again it was "moving ahead rapidly, just needs a little magic." ‌ Nicole Kidman confirmed the news of the much-awaited sequel last year, revealing that she and co-star, and close friend, Sandra Bullock would be once again joining forces once again. In an interview with People magazine, Nicole dished: "Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that's that." She added: "There's a lot more to tell which is why we go, 'OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.'" ‌ Kidman also hinted at the creative process, saying, "(We) found a way in." The buzz around the sequel grew when Warner Bros. teased fans with a social media post after the film hit streaming services, referencing the iconic "midnight margaritas" scene. The filmmakers said in a statement: "Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman's beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story."

Prince George beats the heat in Royal Box at Wimbledon final

The young royal sat in the Royal Box on Centre Court alongside his father, the Prince of Wales, who wore a sharp double-breasted navy suit and polka-dot tie. George looked smart in a dark jacket, pale blue shirt and striped tie as he watched defending champion Carlos Alcaraz take on Jannik Sinner. With temperatures reaching 27C in south-west London, George was seen opening and fanning himself with a dark wood-slatted hand fan and sipping bottled water with his father during a break in play. His sister, Princess Charlotte, also used one of the fans to cool herself in the afternoon sun. The fans, which featured a traditional folding design with brown wooden ribs and paper leaves, were widely used by Royal Box guests as they tried to stay comfortable in the heat. The Wales family arrived ahead of the final and paused to greet 11-year-old Ambrose Caldecott – the young cancer patient chosen to perform the ceremonial coin toss. Kate was heard telling him: 'Good luck today, we'll be cheering you on.' The Princess of Wales wore a royal blue dress, while Charlotte opted for a beige summer dress. They were joined in the box by a host of celebrities including Keira Knightley, Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Nicole Kidman and Dame Anna Wintour. Many guests chose lightweight tailoring, sunglasses and handheld fans to deal with the hot weather. The appearance marked another high-profile Wimbledon outing for Prince George, who also attended the men's final in 2022 and 2023. The family looked relaxed as they took in the final match of the fortnight under clear skies.
