Teachers embrace fun newspaper lessons
Pasir Gudang teachers taking part in the Star-NiE workshop at SMK Taman Daya 2 in Johor Baru. — Courtesy photos OVER 100 teachers immersed themselves in fresh and engaging English language activities during The Star's Newspaper-in-Education (Star-NiE) workshop. One of the participants, SMK Seri Kota Puteri teacher Siti Nadia Saff'ai Hanan, said she had never used newspapers in the classroom. 'It was our first time being exposed to activities like a newspaper scavenger hunt and even making songs from articles. 'We never knew such creative teaching methods existed. 'It really opened our eyes to how fun and flexible English lessons can be,' she said. Inspired by the workshop, Siti Nadia said she wasted no time in putting into action the ideas she had learnt. On that very day, she went on to conduct the same session with all six English language teachers at her school in Masai. 'I decided to share what I had learned from the session with English teachers from my school as I believe it will also help them make learning the language fun,' she said. Siti Nadia has shared what she learnt at the workshop with her fellow teachers. B. Subash, from SJK (T) Ladang Mount Austin, Johor Baru, expressed hope for similar sessions to be made available to all English language teachers. 'I've always heard about the NiE workshop, and we have been requesting for it since last year after having getting positive feedback from teachers in other districts. 'True enough, the workshop activities captured everyone's attention and got both senior and new teachers on our feet. 'The only drawback was the limited time of the workshop, as we only managed to try out two activities together,' said Subash, who has been a teacher for 20 years. Pasir Gudang School Improvement Specialist Coach Plus officer Nurulha Abd Rahman, who invited The Star to conduct the workshop, said the training was especially relevant for new teachers working with students struggling in English. Subash hopes all English language teachers can benefit from Star-NiE. 'With 21 years of teaching experience, I have seen how difficult it can be for students with Tahap Penguasaan 1 or mastery level 1 (TP1) and TP2 for English, especially those who cannot read or write in the language. 'NiE is practical and engaging as it offers real-world content that makes learning meaningful. 'It is helpful especially for teachers who need a different approach,' she said. Held at Dewan Imtiyaz in SMK Taman Daya 2, Johor Baru, the workshop was organised in collaboration with Pasir Gudang District Education Office (PPD). The morning session was attended by 37 secondary school teachers while 75 primary school teachers joined the afternoon session. Nurulha: Teachers are eager to put what they have learnt into practice. Nurulha also noted the importance of incorporating newspaper-based English teaching, especially with the growing number of new teachers in the district. 'The hands-on activities introduced by Star-NiE trainer Shoba Rani Dev created a fun and interactive environment. 'Even the teachers were as excited as children. They are eager to try out what they have learnt with their students,' Nurulha added.

BJP slams Revanth govt over Cabinet ‘Talk Show'
Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government, accusing Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of reducing cabinet meetings to mere platforms for discussion and debate, without any concrete outcomes or implementation of critical public welfare initiatives. BJP Telangana Chief Spokesperson and Media in-charge N V Subash ridiculed the functioning of the Revanth Reddy-led cabinet, calling it 'governance in name only' and 'a cruel joke being played on the people of Telangana.' 'Cabinet meetings under this government have become mere headline management exercises, devoid of any seriousness or intent to govern,' said Subash. 'The state is in the throes of an economic crisis, welfare schemes are in limbo, and development has come to a grinding halt. All we see are meetings and more meetings, but no meaningful action.' Subash alleged that while the Congress government continues to make theatrical announcements, it has failed to implement its own electoral guarantees. 'Forget new promises — the government is not even able to release pensions pending for four months or scholarships due to students. This is not just inefficiency; this is inhuman governance,' he said. He noted that the cabinet's inaction on conducting long-overdue local body elections was particularly disturbing, given that central funds earmarked for rural and urban development are lying unused due to lack of elected representatives in local bodies. 'The Centre has provided the necessary financial assistance, but it is the state government that is sleeping on it, denying people their right to basic civic amenities,' he added. He said that even the court has expressed its anguish in this regard. While expressing support for the cabinet's decision to submit previous BRS government decisions to the Justice P.C. Ghose Commission — which is probing irregularities in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project — Subash questioned why similar urgency is lacking when it comes to alleviating the day-to-day struggles of citizens. 'The government is happy to dig into the past and engage in blame games, but when it comes to current responsibilities, there is radio silence,' he said. 'What stops them from announcing a schedule for local body elections? Why are pensioners and students being made to suffer?' The BJP leader said the Congress government's inability to even finalize a timeline for implementing poll promises — such as financial support to women, farmers, and the unemployed — shows that the administration has no fiscal plan and no political will. 'Revanth Reddy came to power with tall promises and emotional appeals. Today, even his most loyal voters are disillusioned,' he said. Subash reiterated BJP's demand for immediate release of pending pensions and scholarships and a fixed roadmap for the implementation of all electoral guarantees made by the Congress party. He also demanded that the Election Commission be allowed to conduct local body elections without further delay. 'This government is wasting time and public money. If the Congress is incapable of governing, it should admit so instead of hiding behind cabinet theatrics,' he said.

Telangana: BJP slams CM Revanth Reddy for prioritising 'Photo-ops' over governance
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], May 31 (ANI): The Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday, accusing him of reducing the Chief Minister's Office to a stage for photo-ops and media spectacles, rather than addressing serious issues of governance. In a sharp statement, BJP State Chief Spokesperson and Media In-Charge N.V. Subash criticised Revanth Reddy for what he described as 'bizarre and irresponsible' behaviour unbecoming of a state leader. He accused the Chief Minister of parroting false narratives that appear more in tune with Pakistan's propaganda than with the sentiments of Indian citizens. Referring to Revanth Reddy's recent remarks questioning the Modi government's military record and alleging failure to reclaim Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), Subash said, 'Is he living in a fantasy? Even a national daily that once published such claims had to retract them after the Defence Ministry clarified the facts. Yet, the CM chooses to repeat these lies, presumably to curry favour with his party high command--Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi--thanks to whom he parachuted into the CM's chair.' Subash questioned whether the Chief Minister had any respect for the Indian Armed Forces, pointing out that the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMO) had long clarified the facts Revanth continues to distort. 'Even a staunch BJP critic like AIMIM's Asaduddin Owaisi has no hesitation in calling out Pakistan's duplicity. But Revanth Reddy, in a stunning display of ignorance, appears to justify the enemy nation's claims,' he said. Taking a dig at the Chief Minister's priorities, Subash added, 'It is unfortunate that Revanth Reddy seems more thrilled about appearing alongside Miss World on tomorrow's front pages than expressing solidarity with the nation at a time of heightened tensions with our rogue neighbour, Pakistan.' He further mocked the CM for predicting Rahul Gandhi as India's future Prime Minister. 'Even his party members would laugh at that suggestion,' Subash quipped. The BJP Chief Spokesperson urged the Chief Minister to 'exercise restraint and responsibility' in public discourse, stating that such reckless commentary not only damages Revanth Reddy's credibility but also tarnishes the image of Telangana, a state that played a stellar role in India's freedom struggle. High-speed chase: Cop on bike pursues, boards, secures truck
Chennai: It was a scene straight out of the movies. A hijacked truck speeds down a crowded highway, police personnel on bikes give chase and one of them acrobatically clambers on to the truck and tries to pull out the driver. Finally, after a 10km run, the driver crashes the truck. This actually happened on Tuesday on Trichy-Chennai highway near the Paranur toll plaza. Police said Kamalakannan was driving a truck with M-sand from Chengalpet towards Vandalur when, at the Paranur toll plaza, he found there was insufficient balance in the FASTag account. So, he parked the truck by the roadside and called up its owner, Anbu, a resident of Kelambakkam in Chengalpet. Just then a man lurking near the toll plaza suddenly jumped into the lorry and drove away toward Chennai. Kamalakkannan informed patrolling police teams who via walkie-talkie alerted police stationed at Mahindra City and Singaperumal Koil. They set up barricades, but the truck crashed through and sped away. Policemen gave chase on two-wheelers. One of them climbed on to the speeding truck and tried to pull the suspect out. Police surrounded and captured him after a brief struggle. Witnesses said they were lucky, no one was hurt during the truck's reckless journey. Police identified the runaway driver as Subash, 35, from Palayamkottai. Police said Subash had been wandering around the Paranur toll plaza for the past two days, apparently mentally unwell. They suspect that the previous night he broke into a nearby temple and stole construction materials. He also reportedly attempted to rob women walking alone in the area. Subash has been sent him to the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, for observation.
