Police launch awareness campaign on online investment frauds
The Mangaluru City Police have launched a massive awareness campaign to educate people not to fall prey to online investment and other frauds, that come in various forms, in the wake of increasing number of gullible people becoming victims at the hands of fraudsters. Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy in a statement on Saturday said there was a rise in reporting of investment frauds of late. Poor people were losing their hard earned money to cyber fraudsters by falling for their promises of high returns. Therefore, the officers have created awareness messages and launched a massive campaign to educate people, he said. Criminals could target people by tricking them into investing in fake schemes with promises of high returns in a shorter period. Once people invest, the money vanishes. These scams look professional and often involve fake websites, WhatsApp / Telegram groups, celebrity endorsements, fraudulent apps/ social media advertisements, etc. Such fraudulent investment promises often contain guaranteed high returns, urgent pressure to invest, double/triple return promises, unregistered companies or agents, UPI/ crypto payment demands, fake screenshots showing fake profits etc., the police said. Police also gave examples of some real life fraud cases reported in Mangaluru that included a person from Surathkal losing a whopping ₹1.57 crore to a WhatsApp crypto group; a KPT resident losing ₹37.49 lakh through fake share market group and fake tax demands; a Panjimogaru resident losing ₹27.01 lakh via Instagram work from home scam; a person from Kankanady losing ₹30.55 lakh via Facebook share market advertisement; a Urwa resident losing ₹13.57 lakh through Telegram crypto tips and many more.

Talapady-Hejmady stretch accounts for 86% of road fatalities on NHs in and around Mangaluru since 2023
The three National Highways in and around the city have claimed the lives of 188 people from 2023 to June 15, 2025, and 86% of these deaths (162) occurred on the 43-km stretch of the Kochi-Panvel NH 66 alone, according to the data provided by the city police. Pedestrians constitute more than one-third of the road accident victims, that is 72, in Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate limits, and the number of pedestrians who died on NH 66 is 63, during this period. Besides the Talapady-Hejmady stretch of NH 66, which falls under the Commissionerate limits, the Nanthoor-Arkula stretch of Mangaluru-Bengaluru NH 75 (10 km) and the Bikarnakatte-Moodbidri stretch of Mangaluru-Solapur NH 169 come under the jurisdiction of the City Traffic Police. NH 66 has virtually become a death trap for motorists and pedestrians, with 81 people, including 39 pedestrians, being killed in the Traffic North Police limits that comprises areas beyond Kulur Bridge and includes the busy New Mangalore Port, Baikampady and Surathkal. Under the Traffic South Police limits, which comprises areas beyond Pumpwell Circle and including Thokkottu till Talapady, 55 people, including 17 pedestrians, were killed during the period. In all, there were 69 fatal accidents and 72 deaths in 2023, 83 fatal accidents and 85 deaths in 2024 and 30 fatal accidents and 31 fatalities till June 15, 2025, in the City Commissionerate limits. Paucity of road furniture City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy told The Hindu that the police have written several letters to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve the road furniture of NHs. In the June 9 death of two-wheeler rider Ashraf of Surathkal Janatha Colony in Panambur, where a tanker ran over him after his fall due to a pothole, the police have issued a notice to NHAI asking to show cause why action should not be initiated against the Authority. While the Nanthoor-NITK Surathkal stretch of NH 66, under the Port Connectivity Road project, was built and maintained by the New Mangalore Port Road Company Ltd., after the abolition of the NITK Surathkal toll gate, it did not continue to maintain the stretch. Even when the company was collecting the toll, the stretch had been in a pathetic state, forcing the Surathkal Toll Gate Virodhi Horata Samithi and other concerned individuals to hold protests demanding its proper upkeep. The NHAI is yet to complete the total renewal of the 11 km highway sanctioned by the Member of Parliament, Capt. Brjesh Chowta, at a cost of ₹28.58 crore. Another senior officer said that the NHAI failed to erect median barricades to discourage pedestrians from crossing highways at will, and also didn't install blinkers at many median openings to caution vehicle drivers. Many accidents happened due to rash and negligent driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol, Mr. Reddy said, citing the accident at Jeppinamogaru on June 18, where two youngsters in a car died in a self-accident. Sixteen blackspots Of the 16 identified accident blackspots along the NHs, seven were located within the Traffic North Police limits on NH 66, including Kulur, Jokatte Cross, Kulai, Hosabettu, Thadambail, and Mukka. Again, three were on NH 66 under the Traffic East Police limits — AJ Hospital/Kuntikana, KPT, and Nanthoor — and two under the Traffic South Police limits — Kallapu and Kolya. The other blackspots were Bikarnakatte, Gurupura Bandasale Cross to Gurupura Bridge, and Vidyagiri-Samagara Gundi stretch on NH 169 and Adyar Katte on NH 75.

Fearless reporting is the soul of journalism: Police Commissioner
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy on Wednesday, June 25, said it is important for reporters to maintain authenticity in the news and not rush to write or display news in a hurry. Speaking after presenting the 'Brand Mangaluru' award to Vijay Kotian Padu, reporter with a vernacular daily at the Mangaluru Press Club on Wednesday, Mr. Reddy said, in rush to be the first to provide the news, it is not good to write something that comes to the mind and cause injustice. In conflict situations, it is important to tell the truth, rather than treat the accused and the victim on equal footing. 'If you (reporters) write truth there is no need to fear,' he said. If compassion is reflected in the report then there will be no problem. The differences will ease out in the society. Journalists should act like a light to dispel darkness in the society. Fearless reporting, he said, was the soul of reporting. Referring to the work of Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Mr. Reddy said if journalists do their work with noble intention he/she need not fear. Mr. Reddy said journalists, including those in Radio, kept on reporting on positive things while genocide was happening in Rwanda. Over the years differences among communities died down and effort was made to outlaw mischief mongers in Rwanda. 'Similar work needs to be done by journalists in Mangaluru too,' he said. The 'Brand Mangaluru' award was instituted by Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Association. Mr. Padu was chosen for his report on Muslims donning 'Huli vesha'.

Safety harness compulsory for kids on two-wheelers in M'luru
Mangaluru: Mangaluru city police will monitor parents who travel on two-wheelers with children below four years without safety gear. According to deputy commissioner of police (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar, carrying children below four years on two-wheelers without safety harnesses constitutes a violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. "As per the Supreme Court direction, a safety harness is compulsory for children below four years, and those riding two-wheelers should wear quality helmets with ISI marks, and also tie a safety harness around the child's waist. Hence, people should follow these guidelines and adhere to the law," the DCP said. The DCP also clarified that wearing seatbelts is mandatory for all car occupants, including rear-seat passengers. Instead of intercepting cars on roads, the traffic police will use artificial intelligence cameras to monitor and impose penalties on violators. Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said 75 people died in various road accidents in the city limits this year. Out of these, 70 fatalities occurred due to rash and negligent driving. The majority of the deceased were youth under 30 years old. The commissioner emphasised the importance of responsible driving and warned that rash and negligent driving can lead to accidents. Highlighting the dangers of drunk driving, the top cop cited a recent incident wherein two people, including NSUI district vice-president Omshree Poojary, died in a road accident caused by a drunk driver. The commissioner noted that the driver was booked under sections 185 and 183 of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, which can attract a fine up to Rs 10,000.
