Students report drug abuse on campus through QR code: Mangaluru police commissioner
MANGALURU: Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy on Thursday said that the police department has prepared a QR Code in which students can anonymously report drug abuse cases on campus.
The police commissioner was addressing the gathering during International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed by Mangaluru City Police and Dakshina Kannada District Police, in association with NITTE Institute of Professional Education at Town Hall.
Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that the department has prepared a QR Code in which a questionnaire is provided where students can anonymously provide information if any student has become a victim of drug abuse or if somebody is supplying the drugs on the campus and anti-drug committees of the department will take care of the matter.
He also said that Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been issued to all the colleges and committees formed at the college level have to check drug abuse in the campuses.
"Colleges must conduct random checks at least quarterly and screenings for drug consumption on the campus. We must stay away from drugs from achieving big things and help our friends stay away from it. During my studies, I had a good circle of friends. Hence, friends are your responsibility," he said.

"Drug mafias are roaming freely": BJP's Tarun Chugh slams AAP over drug problem in Punjab
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, alleging that drug mafias are operating freely in the state while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is preoccupied with the hospitality of party convenor Arvind Kejriwal. Reiterating the BJP's position on the issue, Chugh added, 'BJP stands strong against drug dealers. No dealer should be spared.' His remarks come amid the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was sent to seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday in connection with a money laundering case linked to drugs. He is scheduled to be produced before the court again on July 2. Meanwhile, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, asserted that the Punjab government is tackling the drug menace at its root. In a post on X, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Kejriwal wrote, 'Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse. In Punjab, the AAP government is not just talking - we are taking strong action to make the state drug-free. We're fighting the problem at its root to protect our youth and their future. Let's salute every honest officer, volunteer, and citizen who stands with us in this real battle.' Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also emphasised that their war against drugs has now transformed into a mass movement. 'The campaign we launched from Punjab to eradicate drugs, 'War Against Drugs', has now transformed into a mass movement. Those who ruin families and use the ill-got gains of this sin to build palaces and host lavish parties will not be spared,' CM Mann said while speaking to the media. 'We have improved law and order in Punjab and provided people with a safe environment. By taking the strictest action against drug traffickers, we have forced them to flee Punjab,' he said. (ANI)

Police launch awareness campaign on online investment frauds
The Mangaluru City Police have launched a massive awareness campaign to educate people not to fall prey to online investment and other frauds, that come in various forms, in the wake of increasing number of gullible people becoming victims at the hands of fraudsters. Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy in a statement on Saturday said there was a rise in reporting of investment frauds of late. Poor people were losing their hard earned money to cyber fraudsters by falling for their promises of high returns. Therefore, the officers have created awareness messages and launched a massive campaign to educate people, he said. Criminals could target people by tricking them into investing in fake schemes with promises of high returns in a shorter period. Once people invest, the money vanishes. These scams look professional and often involve fake websites, WhatsApp / Telegram groups, celebrity endorsements, fraudulent apps/ social media advertisements, etc. Such fraudulent investment promises often contain guaranteed high returns, urgent pressure to invest, double/triple return promises, unregistered companies or agents, UPI/ crypto payment demands, fake screenshots showing fake profits etc., the police said. Police also gave examples of some real life fraud cases reported in Mangaluru that included a person from Surathkal losing a whopping ₹1.57 crore to a WhatsApp crypto group; a KPT resident losing ₹37.49 lakh through fake share market group and fake tax demands; a Panjimogaru resident losing ₹27.01 lakh via Instagram work from home scam; a person from Kankanady losing ₹30.55 lakh via Facebook share market advertisement; a Urwa resident losing ₹13.57 lakh through Telegram crypto tips and many more.

Rally in Belagavi against drug abuse
The police organised a rally to create awareness against drug abuse to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Belagavi on Thursday. A large number of students, NGO members and officers participated in the rally that began at the Rani Channamma Circle and ended at KLE Centenary Hall. They carried placards and raised slogans against drug abuse during their rally. Police Commissioner Borasae Bhushan Gulabrao, who flagged off the rally, said that the city police are adopting a zero tolerance policy against drug abuse. He said that special teams have been formed to trace and arrest those related to drug peddling. He said that he and his officers will soon visit schools and colleges to organise awareness creation programmes. The rally was organised in association with Jain International Trade Organisation and Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) Belagavi unit. Deputy Drug Controller M. Nagaraj, Assistant Drug Controllers K. Mallikarjun, Raghuram Nidavanda and M. Manohar and Drug Inspector Renu Prasad and M. Dayanand from the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA), JITO office-bearers Harshavardhan Inchal and Abhay Adimani, event convenor Devagouda Imagoudanavar and others were present. Members of Belgaum District Retailer and Wholesale Pharma Association, KAHER, Rani Chennamma College of Pharmacy, Maratha Mandal College of Pharmacy, Sagar College of Pharmacy and many more organizations joined the event.
