Subsidy for Totapuri mangoes will be credited to farmers' bank accounts: Chittoor Collector
District Collector Sumit Kumar on Thursday informed the mango farmers that the subsidy of ₹4 per kg for the Totapuri variety announced by the State government would be directly credited to their bank accounts. 'This move is to salvage the mango farmers hit by the declining market prices,' he said. Addressing a meeting with the officials of the Agriculture, Horticulture, Revenue and Industries departments here, the Collector highlighted the need for effective implementation of the initiative and thorough monitoring at the procurement ramps and pulp industries. Mr. Sumit Kumar directed the officials to undertake a series of awareness campaigns involving the farmers about the subsidy and submit daily reports on mango procurement. He instructed the officials to visit ramps regularly and collect data in a prescribed format. The Collector said that in the previous years, nearly 70,000 tonnes of mangoes were procured directly from the fields in Kuppam and Palamaner Assembly constituencies. However, the absence of pulp processing units in these areas, coupled with poor market demand, adversely impacted sales this year. Due to this, the farmers have been forced to transport their produce to faraway places, he said. Mr. Sumit Kumar appealed to the farmers to mandatorily provide Aadhaar card and bank details, and passbooks to the concerned officials while selling their produce at government ramps, pulp industries, or market yards. 'Farmers who directly export mangoes to other States should also register the sales at the area Rythu Seva Kendras,' the Collector said.
