Randy Moss making full-time ESPN return after cancer fight

Randy Moss will soon be back in action on ESPN following his cancer diagnosis. The network confirmed Tuesday in a statement to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand that Moss, 48, is expected to return to the network full-time this fall after stepping away from 'Sunday NFL Countdown' in late 2024 to focus on his health. 'Randy's return on Super Bowl Sunday was an emotional lift — not just for our team but for the entire football community — and knowing he will resume his full 'Sunday NFL Countdown' schedule, beginning in Week 1, has been the highlight of the offseason,' the network said. ESPN announced days later that Moss would be stepping away from 'Sunday NFL Countdown' for an indefinite period. It was Moss himself who revealed later in the month that he had battled cancer and underwent surgery after doctors made a discovery 'in the bowel duct, right in-between the pancreas and the liver.' 'Y'all already know it's the big crybaby here,' Moss said. 'I can't do it alone and I really thank y'all. … It's been hard, but I've got a lot of love and a lot of people believing in me, man. So I'm happy to be here.' Advertisement 3 The NFL Hall of Famer spent 14 seasons in the league and is largely known for his time with the Vikings and Patriots. Randy Moss returning to ESPN's 'Sunday NFL Countdown' in 2025, per report

The Hall of Famer is making another comeback. Randy Moss is returning to ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" for the 2025 season, per The Athletic's Andrew Marchand. The network announced on Dec. 6, 2024 that Moss would be stepping away from the show and Moss later revealed in an Instagram livestream he was recovering from surgery to treat cancer. Moss explained in the livestream that he'd been treated for cancer found outside of his bile duct between his pancreas and liver. In all, he spent six days in the hospital for surgery, treatment and recovery in Charlotte, North Carolina. Less than two months later, Moss made an appearance on ESPN during Super Bowl 59, his first since undergoing cancer treatment. He'd also appeared virtually during the NFL Honors broadcast to announce the winner of the Comeback Player of the Year award, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Now, Moss is set for a full return for the 2025 NFL season. This year marks his 10th with ESPN. He'll be back on "Sunday NFL Countdown" starting in Week 1.

Randy Moss will reportedly return to ESPN's 'Sunday NFL Countdown' for 2025 season following cancer treatment

ESPN says it expects Hall of Famer Randy Moss to return to "Sunday NFL Countdown" in a full-time capacity for the 2025 season, the network told Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. Moss stepped back from his role in December after revealing he had undergone surgery to remove cancerous cells in his bile duct. At the time, he said he still had to go through chemotherapy and radiation, but added he wanted to return to the desk as soon as possible. The 48-year-old also had a stent inserted into his liver due to complications from his condition. 'Randy's return on Super Bowl Sunday was an emotional lift — not just for our team but for the entire football community — and knowing he will resume his full Sunday NFL Countdown schedule, beginning in Week 1, has been the highlight of the offseason,' read a statement from ESPN to The Athletic. Moss had previously drawn attention to his health problems when he wore sunglasses during an episode of "NFL Countdown." Moss made a remote appearance during the 2025 NFL Honors ceremony, announcing Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow as the Comeback Player of the Year. During the spot, Moss wore a hoodie and hat he created in the wake of his cancer diagnosis, with the slogan "Team Moss: Let's Moss Cancer." Sales from the merchandise went toward cancer research.

Sam Ponder Shows True Character With Comment On Kirk Herbstreit

Sam Ponder Shows True Character With Comment On Kirk Herbstreit originally appeared on The Spun. Sam Ponder, the former Sunday NFL Countdown host and College GameDay reporter, was fired by ESPN ahead of the 2024 football season. It would be understandable for the Liberty University graduate to hold some animosity toward the network and her former colleagues, given how her tenure at ESPN ended. Advertisement The New York City resident hasn't worked in TV since she was fired. Some have speculated that Ponder, who leans right on many social and political issues, was let go due to her politics. ESPN maintains that she was let go due to budgetary cuts, as she was making north of $1 million to host a once-a-week show in the fall. 'I don't believe that anything is just budget cuts anymore,' former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, who worked at ESPN from 2000-2011, said. 'I think that they clearly wanted to find an off-ramp for Sam. What's troubling to me is the timing. 'This is three weeks before the NFL season begins. Her show, Sunday NFL Countdown, is coming off its best ratings year in quite some time. So I don't know why they would do this so close to the season and bring so much attention, unless they want to bring in the next host and give that host a lot of attention.' MINNEAPOLIS, MN - FEBRUARY 02: Samantha Ponder speaks at Inside the Game Q&A presented by IFA on February 2, 2018 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo by Thaddaeus McAdams/WireImage)Ponder, though, showed her true character this week, when she was asked about her time at ESPN, specifically College GameDay. She had nothing but good things to say. Advertisement "Do you ever talk to the college gameday guys anymore?" a fan asked Ponder. She responded: "David Pollack is stuck with me as the big brother I never (jk) wanted, and I was texting with Kirk Herbstreit the day before I got fired. 🤣 Rece Davis is my forever favorite. I'll never forget how all 3 of them loved Jesus and treated people. I will be a college gameday fan as long as they continue to make it about the people. It's such a special show." It would be understandable if Ponder, who is enjoying time off while raising her three kids in New York, had negative things to say about ESPN - or her former colleagues. However, she chose to take the high road, doing nothing but complimenting her former show and network. Ponder is rightfully being praised for her classy remarks on Herbstreit and the rest of the College GameDay crew. Advertisement The ESPN college football pregame show, meanwhile, will get back on the air on Saturday, Aug. 30, live from Columbus. Sam Ponder Shows True Character With Comment On Kirk Herbstreit first appeared on The Spun on Jun 26, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jun 26, 2025, where it first appeared.
