Benedict Cumberbatch To Receive Zurich Film Festival's Golden Eye Award
Benedict Cumberbatch will be feted at this year's Zurich Film Festival with the Golden Eye Award for career achievement. Cumberbatch will receive the award in person on September 29. He will also give a masterclass for the audience in Zurich. In his latest film, The Thing With Feathers, he is directed by Dylan Southern. Cumberbatch takes on dual roles in the film, playing both the lead actor and producer through his company, SunnyMarch, in partnership with Lobo Films. He portrays a father of two, grappling with grief and the challenge of rebuilding his life after the death of his wife. 'Benedict Cumberbatch is one of the most versatile character actors of his generation,' Christian Jungen, Festival Director of the Zurich Film Festival, said in a statement. 'He comes from the theater, masters his craft in every role, and gives his characters emotional depth – whether as Alan Turing in The Imitation Game or as superhero Doctor Strange in the Marvel universe. We have shown many of his films at the ZFF in recent years and are delighted to be able to welcome him to Zurich in person for the first time, both as an actor and as the producer of The Thing With Feathers. Benedict Cumberbatch slams Marvel diet and wasteful film sets: ‘I could feed a family'
Benedict Cumberbatch has criticised the film industry's excesses, revealing shocking behind-the-scenes details of his Marvel diet while labelling Hollywood as 'grossly wasteful'. In a candid appearance on Ruthie's Table 4, the actor admitted the food intake required for his role as Doctor Strange left him feeling deeply uncomfortable. 'I think it's horrific eating beyond your appetite,' Cumberbatch said. 'I could feed a family with the amount I'm eating.' His superhero diet involved five meals a day, with constant snacking in between, boiled eggs, almond butter crackers, and cheese among the required staples. A chef supervised his nutrition regimen, tailored to keep him in peak shape for the role, but Cumberbatch now sees it as a symbol of broader problems in the entertainment world. 'It's a grossly wasteful industry,' he continued. 'Think about set builds that aren't recycled, think about transport, think about food, think about housing, but also light and energy.' He acknowledged the criticism often aimed at celebrities who advocate sustainability while working in industries built on excess. 'There's always a level of hypocrisy,' he admitted, but said he's trying to make small changes as a producer through his company SunnyMarch. Even seemingly minor actions matter, he said, like having a 'gentlemanly discussion' about removing single-use plastics from film sets. 'You don't have to give the crew plastic bottles. If you're in the middle of a desert and you can't get glass bottles there, fair enough. But we're in 21st Century.' Cumberbatch isn't currently slated to appear in the next Avengers film and seems to be re-evaluating his role in the industry. His remarks have sparked strong reactions online, with some applauding his honesty and others calling for him to walk away from blockbuster projects entirely if he's serious about reform.

The End We Start From is a film that shows a world in which the UK is hit by the devastating effects of climate change - and viewers have branded the disaster movie 'too real' The movie "The End We Start From" depicts the UK being overwhelmed by severe climate change consequences. Jodie Comer plays a young mother struggling to care for her newborn baby amidst catastrophic flooding in London. A review on Rotten Tomatoes defines the film as a heart-wrenching portrayal of survival and the hardships of refugees fleeing climate change. One reviewer wrote: "The End We Start From presents the purest form of dystopia. It's not an Orwell or Atwood riff. "Rather, it's 'imagine if the current state of Britain was even worse': overflow camps, social disorder as people kill for supplies, things like that. The film's world just feels so real." As the UK becomes increasingly flooded, the movie showcases a rapidly escalating crisis with food supplies and accommodations for the displaced in desperately short supply. I also really liked the prevalence of water, the sounds that at times felt overwhelming (pounding rain, screaming crowds, crying babies, etc.), and the creative angles and use of reflections." The film features Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, with Joel Fry playing her husband 'R', and a cameo from Benedict Cumberbatch. The gripping tale of survival was brought to the screen by Alice Birch, who adapted it from Megan Hunter's 2017 novel The End We Start From. Benedict Cumberbatch's company SunnyMarch, in partnership with Hera Pictures, secured the rights to the book - hence his brief appearance. While the film's themes are rooted in dystopian fiction, many viewers saw it as a chilling prediction of what the future could hold for our country. One viewer said: "A beautiful, yet scary and enlightening piece on terror, loss, love and movement. This shows a picture of what life is already like for some and could become likely for many. The new film will be directed by Jay Roach ('Bombshell') and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. Roach directed the new version of the divorce story from a screenplay written by Tony McNamara, who previously earned his second Oscar nomination for the screenplay to Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things.' Cumberbatch produced the film through his SunnyMarch banner alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland, who have been in development on the project since 2017. Colman produced under South of the River with Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver. Roach and Michelle Graham also produced with Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler of Adler Entertainment Trust as executive producers. The film is part of a first-look deal between them and Searchlight.
