'Israeli' audiences call for Superman movie boycott
The recently released Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn, has sparked significant controversy, with some 'Israeli' audiences and Zionist supporters calling for a boycott of the film due to perceived anti-'Israel' themes. The film's plot centers on Superman (David Corenswet) intervening to stop Boravia, a fictional, militarized nation and US ally, from invading Jarhanpur, a poorer, less-equipped country with a non-white population. Many viewers have drawn parallels between this storyline and the 'Israeli' genocide in Gaza, interpreting Boravia as an allegory for 'Israel' and Jarhanpur as Palestine. Social media platforms, particularly X, have been abuzz with polarized reactions. Posts from users claim the film portrays Superman as 'anti-genocide,' with some explicitly labeling it as 'anti-Israel' and 'pro-Palestine.' > Superman being anti-genocide > Israelis boycotting If the shoe fits... — Donya (@donyaihsan) July 18, 2025 The Parallels are Undeniable — SilencedSirs (@SilentlySirs) July 16, 2025 Israeli audiences are boycotting the new Superman film because they see themselves in the movie. The user argued that the film's depiction of a powerful, white, militarized nation attacking a weaker, non-white one aligns with anti-'Israel' narratives, despite the absence of explicit references to 'Israel' or Palestine. Superman On It's First Tuesday Rewrites Box Office Record Book, Collects $17 Million
Last Updated: In comparison to other DC Comics superhero films, Superman (2025) has also exceeded the 2013 release Man of Steel, which had collected USD 11.5 million on the same day. Superman is unstoppable. Released on July 11, the James Gunn-directed film has recorded a phenomenal business day on its first Tuesday, making a new record at the US box office. According to Forbes, the DC Comics film has now surpassed the first Tuesday collection of Scarlett Johannason's Jurassic Park: Rebirth with a collection of USD 17.1 million in the US after a good outing of USD 13 million on Monday. With such a remarkable jump, the film had the biggest first Tuesday of 2025 in the United States. In contrast, Jurassic World: Rebirth grossed USD 15 million on its debut Tuesday. Going by the numbers, the David Corenswet-starrer superhero film minted USD 155 million at the domestic box office by the end of its first Tuesday. Superman's worldwide cume now stands at USD 270 million. In comparison to other DC Comics superhero films, Superman (2025) has also exceeded the 2013 release Man of Steel, which had collected USD 11.5 million on the same day. The director recently expressed his happiness over the film's success and wrote on a Threads post, 'I am grateful for your enthusiasm and wonderful thoughts over the last several days. We've seen a lot of 'Super' in Superman over the years, and I'm glad to have developed a film that focuses on the 'man' side of the equation – a nice guy who is always looking out for those in need. That it resonates so strongly with so many people throughout the world is a positive testimonial to the goodness and worth of human beings. Thank you." Apart from David Corenswet, the film also features Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Milly Alcock in significant roles. This new perspective on the superhero does not explore the traditional origin story. Instead, it follows a young Clark Kent as he strikes a delicate balance between his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing. The film delves into his early years, dealing with everything from a PR crisis and a personal identity crisis to his developing affections for Lois Lane, all while facing off against the menacing Lex Luthor.
