Over 100 people displaced by Surrey, B.C., condo fire

More than 100 people are displaced following a major condo fire in Surrey's Guildford neighborhood Sunday evening. Crews were called to the scene, a four-storey building located on 153rd Street and 101 Avenue, around 7:30 p.m., according to Jerry Siggs, assistant fire chief with the Surrey Fire Service. Siggs said crews arrived to find heavy flames coming from the second floor, extending upward toward the third and fourth floors, and spreading to the roof. All residents had evacuated by the time fire crews arrived, and no injuries were reported. Siggs described damage to the building as significant. "There's heavy fire damage from floors two to four and through the roof structure itself," he said. Residents from 68 units have been displaced, Siggs said, and he estimated that more than 100 people in total are impacted. He said 51 personnel responded to the fire and the last crews left the scene around 1 a.m. Monday. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Surrey home destroyed by fire, family displaced

A two-alarm fire ripped through a home in Surrey on Monday night. Firefighters were called to 66A Avenue near 180th Street just before 9 p.m. The home was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and the fast-moving fire sent neighbours scurrying. All residents inside the burning home and tenants in the basement made it out safely. Security camera footage from neighbour George Mah shows there was a bang at first and then, shortly after, flames started shooting out of the garage and the family ran for safety. 'She heard the noise, went to look, and then as soon as she checked in the garage, yeah, she saw the flames and the smoke.' Story continues below advertisement The side panelling of Mah's home melted but no other neighbouring homes were damaged. 'It was an amazing call by the first-in captain on scene to send one of the second-in trucks around to the street behind and start attacking the fire from the backside and protecting the structures and cooling them,' Surrey Fire Service assistant Chief Greg Robbie said at the scene. Fire investigators remained on the scene on Tuesday, paying close attention to the BMW electric vehicle that was parked in the driveway. The vehicle was completely burnt out and the charging connector was still plugged into the car. 'Going to determine what the cause was and point of origin possibly,' Robbie said. 'We wouldn't speculate at this time because everything was on fire when we arrived.' Neighbours told Global News that the homeowners are staying with relatives nearby as they deal with the aftermath of this blaze.

Surrey home gutted by Monday night fire

A Surrey home was gutted by fire Monday night, displacing six people and sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. The blaze began around 9 p.m. in the 18000 block of 66A Avenue in Cloverdale. Video shows the multi-storey, single-family home ablaze, with heavy damage to the facade and roof. A white vehicle in the driveway is also in flames. Greg McRobbie, assistant chief of operations with the Surrey Fire Service, said the fire was centred around the garage and main living area, and then spread upward toward the second floor. He said there were no injuries and all five residents of the main-level home were evacuated. One person in the basement was also accounted for before firefighters entered the building, he said. George Mah, who lives next door to the affected home, told CBC News his family heard a loud explosion Monday night. "My daughters were up in the bedroom just behind me here, and they heard like a pop, glass shatter. And they looked out the window and they saw the flames coming up the garage," he said. "It was a very intense fire." McRobbie said the neighbouring homes suffered some damage, but it was "mostly exterior" and those residents were allowed to return Monday night. Mah said the side of their home has some fire damage, but he considers himself fortunate. "I feel more for the family, like we're fortunate that the fire didn't jump." Surrey police told CBC News Tuesday morning that fire officials had advised them the fire's origin could have been an electric vehicle in the driveway, but that investigators were still working to determine the cause. McRobbie said "everything was on fire" when crews arrived and that he didn't want to speculate on what started the blaze.

Over two dozen firefighters battle house fire in Surrey Monday night

Almost 30 firefighters worked to battle a blaze that tore through a home in Surrey Monday night. According to a Surrey Fire Service statement, crews were called to a structure fire in the 18000 block of 66A Avenue just before 9 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find the home fully involved in a blaze that had begun in the garage and spread throughout the building, the statement said. The fire was subsequently upgraded to a two-alarm incident and it took 28 firefighters, seven fire trucks, two command vehicles and around three hours to quell the flames, with crews wrapping up just after midnight. Despite the intensity of the fire, crews were able to stamp it out before any major spreading to the other homes occurred. A few nearby homes suffered exterior damage, but the residents were able to return to their homes that same night, the Surrey Fire Service said. The cause of the fire is still to be determined.
