Surrey home destroyed by fire, family displaced
Firefighters were called to 66A Avenue near 180th Street just before 9 p.m. The home was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived and the fast-moving fire sent neighbours scurrying.
All residents inside the burning home and tenants in the basement made it out safely.
Security camera footage from neighbour George Mah shows there was a bang at first and then, shortly after, flames started shooting out of the garage and the family ran for safety.

'That's what first got the homeowner's attention,' Mah said.
'She heard the noise, went to look, and then as soon as she checked in the garage, yeah, she saw the flames and the smoke.'

The side panelling of Mah's home melted but no other neighbouring homes were damaged.
'It was an amazing call by the first-in captain on scene to send one of the second-in trucks around to the street behind and start attacking the fire from the backside and protecting the structures and cooling them,' Surrey Fire Service assistant Chief Greg Robbie said at the scene.
Fire investigators remained on the scene on Tuesday, paying close attention to the BMW electric vehicle that was parked in the driveway.
The vehicle was completely burnt out and the charging connector was still plugged into the car.
'Going to determine what the cause was and point of origin possibly,' Robbie said.
'We wouldn't speculate at this time because everything was on fire when we arrived.'
Neighbours told Global News that the homeowners are staying with relatives nearby as they deal with the aftermath of this blaze.

Second victim of alleged Kelowna hammer attack mourns the loss of friend
Carrie Wiebe is still recovering — not just from the physical injuries she suffered, but from the trauma of surviving an attack that claimed the life of her friend, Bailey McCourt. On July 4, the two women were on their lunch break in a Kelowna, B.C., parking lot when they were allegedly attacked with a hammer. McCourt didn't survive. 'I have yelled and cried a lot,' Wiebe said. Wiebe suffered multiple injuries, including bruising on her brain, and multiple bruises on her body. The bruises on her body serve as a daily reminder of the violence she endured. She calls them defensive wounds — proof of her attempt to protect both herself and McCourt. 'I do feel like I failed,' she said. 'Like I could have kept her alive. I struggle with that every day.' 'I still struggle with that,' Wiebe said. 'It enrages me.' She says McCourt had only just learned about the conviction an hour before the attack. 'She was afraid he would be angry,' Wiebe recalled. 'But we didn't know he was free.' When RCMP officers informed Wiebe that McCourt had died, she said she couldn't breathe. 'It was hard to hear — even though I kind of already knew.' Wiebe and McCourt had bonded over their shared experiences, Wiebe hopes McCourt's death will lead to changes in how the justice system handles intimate partner violence. Story continues below advertisement 'There needs to be some change,' she said. 'If we come forward, it has to be a safe space — where we won't end up getting the wrath after they're released.' As she continues to heal, Wiebe says she's taken on a role she never expected. 'I have to be Bailey's voice.' A GoFundMe has been established to help Wiebe pay for expenses surrounding her recovery. 7 year sentence for man convicted of manslaughter in fatal Belvedere LRT stabbing
A man with a history of attacking transit riders has been sentenced for a random attack in north Edmonton that left a 52-year-old father dead two years ago. Jamal Joshua Malik Wheeler pleaded guilty to manslaughter and has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Police have arrested and charged 27-year-old Jamal Joshua Malik Wheeler with second-degree murder in relation to a man found dead at Belvedere LRT station on Sunday, July 9, 2023. supplied to Global News The victim, Rukinisha Nkundabatware, left his home on July 9, 2023, at around 9 p.m. to meet up with a friend at the Belvedere Transit Centre. Story continues below advertisement According to the agreed statement of facts, there was an unprovoked altercation at the LRT station between Nkundabatware and his friend, and a group that included Wheeler. The statement went on to say Wheeler left the station and got a knife from his waistband or backpack. Wheeler then ran towards the friend, but when the friend fled, Wheeler approached Nkundabatware and stabbed him in the chest, before running away. The defence argued for a five or six year sentence, acknowledging that Wheeler is remorseful for his actions. They asked the judge to consider Wheeler's troubled upbringing with domestic violence and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder — the defence argued the condition led to poor impulse control and poor social behaviour. 'I'm sorry for my actions and deeply regret what happened,' Wheeler told the courtroom on Monday. The judge decided on seven years, weighing between Wheeler's acknowledgment of regret but also that Wheeler has had multiple run-ins with the justice system. Fire displaces more than 100 residents of Surrey condo building
More than 100 residents of a Surrey condo building were forced out of their homes on Sunday night after a fire broke out. Crews were called to the four-storey building at 153 Street and 101 Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Flames could be seen shooting from units on the second, third and fourth floors and through the roof. 'Crews arrived to heavy fire in the roof area,' Surrey Deputy Fire Chief Jason Cairney said. 'And they worked quickly to deploy our aerial apparatus to quickly get control of that fire and knock it down.' The cause of the fire is under investigation.
