Nothing would be easy in a potential Yankees' pursuit of Eugenio Suarez
Then comes the stiffer challenge: beating out other contenders who also happen to need a third baseman or power bat.
Because Suárez is not just the top third baseman who might be on the market, he is also likely the top bat that could be available.
But while the Yankees are pursuing the 34-year-old slugger, who entered Tuesday tied with Aaron Judge for second in the majors with 36 home runs, they are far from alone.
The Cubs, Mariners, Tigers and perhaps even Brewers could use help at the hot corner, and all of those teams came into the year with a farm system ranked higher than the Yankees, according to Baseball America and MLB.com.
Meanwhile, Suárez is only raising his price tag by the day — assuming the Diamondbacks actually sell, as they entered Tuesday sitting at 50-51 and 5 ¹/₂ games back of the final playoff spot in the National League.
Suárez had been doing his best to try to keep them from being sellers, crushing 18 home runs over his past 32 games while batting .325 with a 1.220 OPS.
'He's obviously having a great year,' Aaron Boone said. 'He's been a really good power hitter in the league for a long time. I'm sure he's going to be talked about by a lot of teams. Arizona seems like one of those teams that you don't know what they're doing either. They're kind of on the periphery of contention right now, but have obviously had some guys injured. So we'll see.'
Suárez has his warts, like his below-average fielding and high strikeout rate.
But his bat would be head and shoulders above what the Yankees have gotten from the position this season — aside from the time Jazz Chisholm Jr. spent there before moving back to second base — with a mix of Oswald Peraza, Jorbit Vivas, the since-DFA'd Pablo Reyes and injured Oswaldo Cabrera.
Eugenio Suárez will have many more suitors than just the Yankees if the Diamondbacks decide to be sellers before the MLB trade deadline.

Entering Tuesday, the Yankees had received 0.1 bWAR from their third basemen this season, which ranked 16th in the majors.
Their 0.7 fWAR at the position was tied for 21st.
The Cubs had been even weaker by both versions of WAR — -0.3 in bWAR (21st) -0.4 in fWAR (29th).
Though third base might be the top need of those other contending teams, there is an argument to be made that the biggest Yankees need is arms — particularly in the bullpen, but also a starter.
The bullpen has been overworked, exposed and injured over the past few months, while the Yankees offense has scored the third-most runs per game despite the black hole at third base.
So how they allocate their resources in the farm system — with top prospect George Lombard Jr. likely untouchable and the red-hot Spencer Jones perhaps joining him — to get deals done before the July 31 trade deadline remains to be seen.
The Diamondbacks are believed to be targeting pitching in return if they deal Suárez.
The top Yankees pitching prospect, Cam Schlittler, made his second big league start on Tuesday, while most of their other top young arms are at High-A or Double-A.
Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon could be another option for the Yankees if they're unable to land Eugenio Suárez before the MLB trade deadline.
AP
If the Yankees are not able to match up with the Diamondbacks, their secondary options at third base include the Rockies' Ryan McMahon and the Pirates' Ke'Bryan Hayes.
Both are signed beyond this year (McMahon through 2027 and Hayes through 2029). Both are talented defenders (especially Hayes) but have below-average OPS (especially Hayes) this season.
'I think McMahon would flourish for them,' an NL scout said. 'He'll be playing more meaningful games. He's a Gold Glove defender at third base, really, really good. He would extremely stabilize the left side of their infield. I think with the short porch in New York, being a left-handed hitter, I think he could flourish there.'

Paul Skenes dominant again, striking out 9 in 6 innings as Pirates blank D-backs 6-0
PITTSBURGH — Paul Skenes struck out nine and gave up three hits in six innings, Oneil Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes drove in two runs each, and the Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second straight game, 6-0 on Sunday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes (6-8) is the first pitcher to have an ERA below 2 through his first 45 starts. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year sits at 1.89 for his career and 1.83 this year, which leads the majors. Skenes is the only starter this season who hasn't allowed a first-inning run. He struck out two in the first, including Geraldo Perdomo, who hadn't fanned in a league-best 39 straight at-bats. Jake McCarthy had a one-out triple in the second, but Skenes struck out James McCann and retired Alek Thomas on a popup to short. Skenes also worked around a leadoff double by Tristin English in the third. Cruz walked leading off the Pirates second and the majors stolen base leader with 34 was off and running when Tommy Pham singled to center field on a 1-2 pitch from Zac Gallen for a 1-0 lead. Gallen (7-12) allowed four runs on five hits in six innings. Arizona scored one run in the three-game series, winning 1-0 in 11 innings Friday night. Skenes hit Eugenio Suárez with a 3-2 pitch leading off the fourth and McCarthy doubled him to third with one out. Skenes then struck out McCann on three pitches and Thomas on six. Skenes has allowed one run or fewer in 14 of 22 starts this season after doing it 14 times as a rookie. The D-backs head to Detroit to begin a series against the Tigers on Monday, and the Pirates play at San Francisco. ___ AP MLB:

They won the opener 1-0, but were shut out 2-0 Saturday and 6-0 Sunday. Arizona lost the finale as +134 underdogs as the Under (7.5) cashed. The Tigers ended their 6-game skid Sunday with a 10-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays as -113 home favorites as the Over (8.5) cashed. Starter Jack Flaherty delivered 6 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts and 2B Gleyber Torres powered the offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Diamondbacks at Tigers picks and predictions Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 5 Moneyline BET DIAMONDBACKS (+110). The Diamondbacks are in a favorable spot to take Monday's series opener in Detroit. Arizona sends Rodriguez to the mound, who's been solid on the road, allowing just 5 earned runs over his last 3 road starts (14 2/3 IP). He's coming off a strong outing, holding Houston scoreless through 6 1/3 innings. On the other side, Detroit rookie Melton makes his second career start—and first at Comerica Park—after giving up 6 earned runs in 5 innings in his debut. That home crowd pressure won't make things easier. The Tigers have dropped 7 of their last 10 games at home and enter the week struggling at the plate, hitting an MLB-worst .197 over the last 15 days. While Detroit looked better on Sunday, it's tough to trust this offense to stay hot. At plus odds, the value lies with Arizona to grab the series opener on the road. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I'm going to keep my wager to the run line. Over/Under BET OVER 9 (+100). The Over has hit in 7 of the last 8 games between the Tigers and Diamondbacks, and recent trends support more scoring Monday. The Over is 3-2-1 in Detroit's last 6 games and has cashed in 4 of Rodriguez's last 6 starts. Expect another high-scoring affair in this series opener. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win!
