‘Swachhata' awards to be introduced in Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada: Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed that 'Swachhata' awards be introduced in the state, similar to the Swachh Bharat awards, to promote cleanliness. He emphasized the need for a robust action plan to foster healthy competition among local bodies to achieve the goals of Swachh Andhra-Swarna Andhra. He asked that an independent agency should conduct evaluations in different local bodies. Naidu reviewed the Swachh Andhra-Swarna Andhra programme with minister Narayana and officials on Monday. He suggested organizing special programmes on July 21 in the corporations of Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, and Rajamahendravaram, which won Swachh Bharat awards. The chief minister directed that Swachh Andhra - Swarna Andhra programmes be conducted theme-wise and instructed measures to reduce the use of single-use plastics in municipalities. He emphasized producing cloth bags through self-help groups. He also directed the formulation of a plan to make government offices plastic-free. The chief minister directed officials to ready a blueprint to achieve a waste-free state through a circular economy. He suggested providing incentives to industries supporting the initiative. He directed officials to assess how many units can be integrated into the circular economy and stated that providing incentives systematically would attract investments to the state. He highlighted that a model project is currently being implemented in Kuppam municipality for waste-free management and instructed officials to study the project. He also issued orders to swiftly clear 10 lakh metric tonnes of accumulated waste from the previous govt's tenure within a stipulated timeframe. With 600 metric tonnes of aqua waste generated daily, CM instructed measures to integrate related units into the circular economy. Admissions rise in welfare hostels with improved facilities in Andhra
NELLORE: Welfare hostels across Nellore district are witnessing a significant rise in student admissions for the 2025–26 academic year, attributed to improved infrastructure, quality education, and proactive administrative efforts. Nellore District Collector O Anand stated that the hostels are now better equipped to serve students from economically weaker sections with nutritious meals, hygienic conditions, and enhanced academic support. The State government has allocated substantial funds for renovations and infrastructure development. Minor repair works in 30 hostels were completed with an allocation of Rs 78 lakh, while Swachh Andhra Corporation sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the construction of 69 toilets in 10 hostels, currently underway. The Backward Classes Welfare Department operates 63 pre-matric and 16 post-matric hostels in the district. This year, 4,120 students have enrolled, 2,373 renewals and 1,654 new admissions, marking an increase of over 550 students from last year. Students are provided with free uniforms, notebooks. Sanitation is prioritised, and academic progress is monit o r e d thr oug h weekly assessments under the 'Chaduvudam Ishtanga' initiative, categorising students into A, B, and C groups. The Social Welfare Department manages 71 hostels, 41 for boys and 30 for girls. Essential repairs have been completed with a budget of Rs 932.10 lakh to enhance living conditions. Apart from academic supplies, students received notebooks, and recreational materials. Collector Anand encouraged parents to enrol their children in government hostels to benefit from the State's comprehensive welfare initiatives.

Five Andhra Pradesh cities selected for Swachh Survekshan awards
Vijayawada: Five cities from Andhra Pradesh, including Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, were selected for the Swachh Survekshan awards in various categories. The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs announced the winners, and the awards will be presented by Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar at a function in New Delhi on July 17. State minister for municipal administration, Ponguru Narayana, will attend the event to receive the awards on behalf of the state. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) was selected in the Super Swachh League awards under the 'above 10 lakh population' category. The city previously won the 'cleanest big city award' in the 2018 edition of the Swachh Survekshan survey and regularly features among the top 10 cleanest cities in the country. The Guntur Municipal Corporation was selected in the 3 to 10 lakh population category, while Tirupati Municipal Corporation won in the 50,000 to 3 lakh population segment. GVMC to get 95 e-vehicles soon for garbage transportation: Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman
Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K. Pattabhi Ram said that to strengthen the solid waste management in the city, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) will be provided 95 electric vehicles in the next two to three months for door-to-door garbage collection. This will not only improve garbage collection, but will also improve the air quality, he added. Mr. Pattabhi Ram inspected the bio-mining and also the waste-to-energy plant at Kapuluppada along with GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, here on Saturday. Later, addressing the media, Mr. Pattabhi Ram said that the State government is also in process of procuring compactors and they will be provided to the city based on the needs of GVMC. He stated that the bio-mining operations at the Kapuluppada dumping yard are being efficiently carried out. 'As per the Swachh Andhra Corporation's decision, 2.01 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste are to be bio-mined across 5 acres by July 11. As of now, around 1.63 lakh metric tonnes, which is about 80 per cent have been processed so far,' he said. He stated that the reclaimed land, once cleared of legacy waste, will be developed into a green space and further as a tourism spot by the GVMC as a pilot project. He said that the ultimate goal of the State government, under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, is to make Andhra Pradesh a 'dump-yard free' State. He said that the government's aim is to ensure waste generated on a daily basis is processed the same day. He also said that steps will be taken to generate the power capacity from the current 15 MW to 20 MW in the waste-to-energy plant. He noted that the 1,200 metric tonnes of waste generated daily in Visakhapatnam is being effectively converted to electricity. Five awards During the media interaction, Mr. Pattabhi Ram also announced that Andhra Pradesh has secured five national-level awards in the 'Swachh Survekshan 2024'. He said that GVMC received a special category ministerial award, while Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation (RMC) won a State-level ministerial award. He also stated that Vijayawada, Guntur, and Tirupati received Super Swachh league awards. He said that A.P. is emerging as a model State for cleanliness through the Swachh Andhra movement. He highlighted that the State-wide 'Swarnandhra–Swachhandhra' initiatives are held on the third Saturday of every month, aligning with the vision of the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' launched by the Prime Minister. Meanwhile, GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg expressed delight over the awards received by Visakhapatnam and Rajahmundry, emphasising that public participation will be the key to achieving top national ranks. He reaffirmed the commitment to developing Visakhapatnam as a clean and beautiful city. He said that three phases of bio-mining at the Kapuluppada yard have been completed. Currently, door-to-door waste collection has reached 80 to 90 per cent coverage, and steps are being taken to achieve 10 per cent, GVMC Commissioner added.

NTR dist selected for Andhra's 1st dumpyard-free pilot project
Vijayawada: In a bid to transform Andhra Pradesh into a dumpyard-free state, Swachh Andhra Corporation chairman Kommareddy Pattabhi Ram announced that govt has selected NTR district for the implementation of a pilot project on waste management. This project involves the establishment of two exclusive clusters where waste generated daily will be processed on the same day in the district. Pattabhi Ram stated that in order to make AP a dumpyard-free district, the corporation has selected NTR district for this transformation. "Excluding Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), two clusters will be created with Jaggayyapet, Nandigama, Kondapalli, and Tiruvuru municipalities, along with 75 major gram panchayats with over 5,000 population. Here, waste generated on a daily basis will be processed on the same day. The two clusters would be designed in such a way that the villages under the 75 major gram panchayats and areas near Mylavaram, Nuzvid, and Tiruvuru are also covered," Pattabhi Ram said. He chaired a meeting with Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), Jaggayyapet MLA Sreeram Tataiah, and NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha. They discussed the plans to make the district a dumping yard-free district at the district collectorate premises on Tuesday. Pattabhi Ram said CM Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the first cluster on Swachata Divas on October 2, that marks Gandhi Jayanti.
