Was ‘The Last Of Us' Cancelled? What We Know About ‘TLOU' Part 3

The Last of Us Season 2 was, well, a wee bit controversial. The HBO hit put fans through hell, killing popular characters off in spectacularly brutal ways while descending further and further into nihilism. Joel (Pedro Pascal) was essentially beaten to death with a golf club before poor Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) eyes. Ellie, in turn, embarked on her own mission of vengeance, murdering multiple people — including a pregnant woman! — in the process. Oh, and The Last of Us revealed that Seattle is plunged in a civil war between the revolutionary Wolves and cult-like Seraphites. Basically, The Last of Us Season 2 did all it could to bum us out. Did TLOU go too far? Was The Last of Us cancelled?!? There was not a new episode of The Last of Us on HBO or MAX last week, meaning fans have been left with a devastating cliffhanger. The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 ends with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) tracking Ellie down to the theater she and her friends are using as a temporary base. Abby kills Jesse (Young Mazino) and threatens Tommy (Gabriel Luna). The last we see of this tense stand off is Abby shooting in Ellie's direction. Then, we flashback to what Abby was doing three days earlier, i.e. the day Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) arrive in Seattle. So what comes next? Will The Last of Us come back? Here's everything we know about the future of The Last of Us… Nope! There is no new episode of The Last of Us on HBO or MAX tonight. There were a total of seven episodes in The Last of Us Season 2. That means that The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 'Convergence' was the season finale. Nope! In fact, HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season all the way back on April 9, 2025. We are definitely getting Abby's side of the story…eventually. Yes, HBO is making The Last of Us Season 3. While The Last of Us's co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have tried to play coy about what comes next, they did confirm some fan theories during a recent virtual press conference DECIDER attended. As fans of the video games might expect, The Last of Us Season 3 will adapt the rest of The Last of Us II. Meaning Season 3 will tackle what Abby was up to during those three tumultuous days in Seattle. 'There is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into,' The Last of Us co-creator and co-showrunner Craig Mazin said. 'There's no question that Abby is the hero of her story. Kaitlyn Dever is the hero of a story always, you know? I mean, if you have Kaitlyn Dever, you use a Kaitlyn Dever.' Mazin also teased that the third season will answer many questions sparked in Season 2. 'What is going on? How did that war start? How did the Seraphites start? Who is the prophet? What happened to her? What does Isaac want? What's happening at the end of Episode 7? What is this explosion? What is all of it?' Mazin said. 'And all of that will become clear.' We might already know that there will be a third season of The Last of Us, but we don't yet know exactly when it will be back. However, we have some theories. The first two seasons of the show both took approximately two years to go from scripts to the screen. Logic would state that The Last of Us Season 3 will come out in 2027. That said, production on the first two seasons of The Last of Us was delayed due to COVID-19 and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, respectively. That means there's a chance there could be a tighter turnaround for the third season. We think the earliest TLOU Season 3 could come out would be late 2026, but 2027 is our safe bet. Worried that The Last of Us Season 2 ends with Ellie's death? Still trying to convince yourself that Jesse is okay? Wondering why Mel's (Ariela Barer) death was actually so much worse in the show than it was in the game? Check out DECIDER's breakdown of The Last of Us Season 2 finale to learn more! 5 things GTA 6 can learn from The Last of Us

Image via Rockstar GTA 6 is going to be massive. But if Rockstar wants to level up the story game like never before, they should take a few notes from The Last of Us — Naughty Dog's emotionally gut-punching masterpiece. Sure, GTA is all about chaos, crime, and crazy open-world freedom, but sprinkling in just a bit of what made TLOU iconic? That's the cheat code to legendary. Here are 5 things GTA 6 can (and should) steal from The Last of Us playbook: 1. Make Players Care About the Characters The most iconic thing about The Last of Us isn't the infected — it's Joel and Ellie. Their bond is what carries the game, drawing players into their world emotionally. GTA 6 can benefit from deeper character relationships that go beyond surface-level criminal partnerships. We need protagonists who evolve, feel pain, grow over time, and make us care about them. Lucia and Jason already show promise, but Rockstar can double down on humanizing them, not just through cutscenes, but through in-game moments that reveal vulnerability. 2. Ground the World in Real Emotion and Consequences One of The Last of Us 's strengths is how every choice and action feels meaningful. Characters suffer consequences. Violence has weight. Death isn't just a game mechanic — it leaves an emotional scar. In contrast, GTA 5 often treated chaos like a punchline. For GTA 6 to grow, Rockstar should bring more gravity to its world. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo If a character dies, it should matter. If a heist goes wrong, it should impact relationships. GTA 6 Weapons & Combat 3. Refine Stealth and Combat Mechanics While GTA has always been about explosive action, The Last of Us showed how smart, fluid stealth can enhance tension and immersion. Rockstar could revamp its clunky stealth mechanics to allow for quieter, smarter play — sneaking into compounds, silently disabling guards, or using the environment more tactically.. 4. Environmental Storytelling That Actually Speaks The Last of Us is famous for telling mini-stories through graffiti, abandoned homes, and the world itself. You learn about people who died, lovers separated, communities torn apart — all without a word spoken. GTA 6 could benefit from this subtle form of storytelling. A messy apartment could reveal a drug addict's decline. A boarded-up mansion might hint at Vice City's class divide. Why GTA 6 Can't Afford to Be Bad 5. A Story That Isn't Afraid to Take Risks Naughty Dog wasn't afraid to polarize players with The Last of Us Part II . Whether you loved or hated its direction, it took bold narrative swings — and GTA 6 should too. Rockstar has often played it safe by relying on familiar tropes and sarcastic humor. But with a new generation of gamers craving meaningful stories, it's time to take risks with character deaths, moral ambiguity, or even narrative structure. Make players argue. Make them uncomfortable. Make them feel something. GTA 6 has the potential to be more than just the next sandbox playground. By borrowing emotional depth, risk-taking, and immersive storytelling from The Last of Us , Rockstar can redefine what an open-world crime epic can be.

The Last of Us season 2 ends on disappointing note as fans slam Bella Ramsey's acting: 'TLOU deserved better than this crap'

The Last of Us season 2 has officially wrapped up, but for many fans, it didn't go out with the same impact it came in with. Instead of applause, the HBO hit is now facing a wave of criticism, with longtime viewers venting their frustration across social media and Reddit. Despite a promising start and the continued star power of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the finale left many feeling like the show had lost its emotional core, and with it, the trust of its audience. The Last of Us season 2 ending explained The Last of Us Credit: X The Last of Us season 2 finale episode 7 brought Ellie (Bella Ramsey) face-to-face with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in the most harrowing way yet. Still reeling from Joel's death, Ellie sets out alone to find Abby, believing she's hiding out in the aquarium. After a tense argument with Jesse (Young Mazino), she heads off solo — only to get caught by the ruthless Seraphites while trying to reach Abby by boat. She narrowly escapes being executed when an alarm signals an attack on their village, forcing them to flee. Inside the aquarium, things spiral. Ellie kills Owen during a standoff but accidentally fatally wounds a pregnant Mel in the process. In a gut-wrenching scene, Mel begs Ellie to cut out the baby to save it, but Ellie breaks down, unable to go through with it. Jesse and Tommy (Gabriel Luna) find her just in time to get her out. But peace doesn't last. Back at the theatre, Ellie and Jesse try to regroup, only to discover Abby has tracked them down. Jesse is killed instantly. Ellie pleads for Tommy's life, but Abby isn't here for him — she's here for Ellie. The screen cuts to black with a single gunshot echoing. The final scene flashes back to Seattle Day One, this time from Abby's point of view, teasing that the upcoming chapter may rewind the clock and shift the narrative entirely to her side. Fans react to the 'crappy' The Last of Us season 2 finale For many longtime fans, The Last of Us season 2 finale didn't land the way it was supposed to. Over on the r/TheLastOfUs2 subreddit, fans expressed their frustration in response to how the story unfolded along with Bella Ramsay's acting chops. One post titled "I hope we never have to sit through this crap again. TLOU deserved so much better than whatever this was" quickly gained traction, echoing the sentiment of disillusioned viewers. One user wrote, "Second season felt like such a teen drama i couldn't finish it. Sad because season 1 is so good." "Ruined a good show," another said, while someone else added, "Watch the other deluded sub make shouts for an Emmy nomination lmao. One of the worst castings and performances I have ever seen." One user also slammed Bella's acting, writing that she was still living in her Game of Thrones era. Another chimed in, "This season has been an utter pile of crap. The only good episode was episode 2." And in one of the harsher takes, a user remarked, "They fucked it right up there with other disgraced greats—Resident Evil, Halo, Borderlands—but TLOU was extra special. The only silver lining is I got to see #notmyJoel get eliminated by who would've been an entirely better Ellie, and that was some kind of poetic justice. Now, let's hope they stray far from the games again and we get the same fate for Bellie." 'Don't cry because it happened, smile because it's over.' — Dr. Seuss. byu/Blitzzad inTheLastOfUs2 The internet clings to Ellie's 'dad' joke In the middle of all the outrage, a moment from episode 4 has taken on a life of its own. Ellie's line, 'I'm gonna be a dad,' referring to her pregnancy with Dina despite identifying as a lesbian, has sparked widespread confusion, memes, and accusations of forced wokeness. Threads like 'I'm a dad playing a dad disguised as another dad' and 'Everywhere I go, I see her face' have turned the moment into an internet punchline. Whether fans found it cringeworthy or hilarious, it's clearly one of the few things keeping people talking, for better or worse. i'm a dad playing a dad disguised as another dad byu/shankmaster8000 inTheLastOfUs2 Everywhere i go i see her face. They are all gonna be a dad byu/Delicious_Republic_4 inTheLastOfUs2 The Last of Us Season 3 is coming, whether fans are ready or not Despite the controversy, HBO has already greenlit The Last of Us for a third season. That means more of Abby's story, more fallout from Ellie's choices, and potentially, a deeper dive into uncharted territory beyond the video game narrative. A release date for the new season has yet to be announced.

There was a two year gap between series one and two, but that was impacted by the writing and actor strikes in 2023.
