Was ‘The Last Of Us' Cancelled? What We Know About ‘TLOU' Part 3

Yahoo10-06-2025
The Last of Us Season 2 was, well, a wee bit controversial. The HBO hit put fans through hell, killing popular characters off in spectacularly brutal ways while descending further and further into nihilism. Joel (Pedro Pascal) was essentially beaten to death with a golf club before poor Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) eyes. Ellie, in turn, embarked on her own mission of vengeance, murdering multiple people — including a pregnant woman! — in the process. Oh, and The Last of Us revealed that Seattle is plunged in a civil war between the revolutionary Wolves and cult-like Seraphites.
Basically, The Last of Us Season 2 did all it could to bum us out. Did TLOU go too far? Was The Last of Us cancelled?!?
There was not a new episode of The Last of Us on HBO or MAX last week, meaning fans have been left with a devastating cliffhanger. The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 ends with Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) tracking Ellie down to the theater she and her friends are using as a temporary base. Abby kills Jesse (Young Mazino) and threatens Tommy (Gabriel Luna). The last we see of this tense stand off is Abby shooting in Ellie's direction. Then, we flashback to what Abby was doing three days earlier, i.e. the day Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced) arrive in Seattle.
So what comes next? Will The Last of Us come back? Here's everything we know about the future of The Last of Us…
Nope! There is no new episode of The Last of Us on HBO or MAX tonight.
There were a total of seven episodes in The Last of Us Season 2. That means that The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 7 'Convergence' was the season finale.
Nope! In fact, HBO renewed The Last of Us for a third season all the way back on April 9, 2025. We are definitely getting Abby's side of the story…eventually.
Yes, HBO is making The Last of Us Season 3. While The Last of Us's co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have tried to play coy about what comes next, they did confirm some fan theories during a recent virtual press conference DECIDER attended.
As fans of the video games might expect, The Last of Us Season 3 will adapt the rest of The Last of Us II. Meaning Season 3 will tackle what Abby was up to during those three tumultuous days in Seattle.
'There is another side to this story that we have yet to really delve into,' The Last of Us co-creator and co-showrunner Craig Mazin said. 'There's no question that Abby is the hero of her story. Kaitlyn Dever is the hero of a story always, you know? I mean, if you have Kaitlyn Dever, you use a Kaitlyn Dever.'
Mazin also teased that the third season will answer many questions sparked in Season 2.
'What is going on? How did that war start? How did the Seraphites start? Who is the prophet? What happened to her? What does Isaac want? What's happening at the end of Episode 7? What is this explosion? What is all of it?' Mazin said. 'And all of that will become clear.'
We might already know that there will be a third season of The Last of Us, but we don't yet know exactly when it will be back. However, we have some theories.
The first two seasons of the show both took approximately two years to go from scripts to the screen. Logic would state that The Last of Us Season 3 will come out in 2027.
That said, production on the first two seasons of The Last of Us was delayed due to COVID-19 and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, respectively. That means there's a chance there could be a tighter turnaround for the third season. We think the earliest TLOU Season 3 could come out would be late 2026, but 2027 is our safe bet.
Worried that The Last of Us Season 2 ends with Ellie's death? Still trying to convince yourself that Jesse is okay? Wondering why Mel's (Ariela Barer) death was actually so much worse in the show than it was in the game? Check out DECIDER's breakdown of The Last of Us Season 2 finale to learn more!

Billy Joel Says Losing Christie Brinkley ‘Devastated' Him — but He ‘Never Blamed Her'

Billy Joel may have been married more than once, but only one ex-wife has her own theme song. In HBO's new documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, the music legend opens up about his marriage to supermodel Christie Brinkley — and the unraveling that followed. 'It was like being a teenager all over again,' Joel says of falling for Brinkley, whom he met in 1983 while vacationing in St. Barts. 'Experiencing those same emotions that I had when I was first discovering romance and love.' More from SheKnows A Fellow Legend Slammed Billy Joel's Sobriety Journey - He Still Feels the Sting They were married by 1985, welcomed daughter Alexa Ray that same year, and for a while, it really was the fantasy. 'Here I am dating this beautiful supermodel and… me? I'm from Hicksville,' Joel says in the doc. 'What am I doing with her? What's she doing with me?' Still, he calls that time 'very productive,' crediting Brinkley as a muse: 'I wrote a lot of songs for her.' But by the end of the decade, Joel's life on the road — and mounting personal struggles — took a toll. Brinkley describes that period as Joel 'boomeranging between being a family man and tortured artist,' often disappearing to drink while his life 'unraveled.' His 1989 song 'I Go to Extremes' wasn't subtle about it, and neither was she: 'Booze was the other woman,' Brinkley wrote in her 2025 memoir Uptown Girl. 'And it was beginning to seem that he preferred to be with her rather than me.' Joel, who also dealt with betrayal from his longtime manager Frank Weber during that time, doesn't deny how hard it got. He filed a $90 million lawsuit over Weber's alleged fraud and spent years touring to recoup the loss — all while drifting further from home. 'It devastated me,' Joel says of the divorce. 'But I never blamed her.' Despite it all, the pair have stayed close. In April 2024, Joel serenaded Brinkley with 'Uptown Girl' at Madison Square Garden. And when he paused touring due to health issues in 2025, Brinkley posted a warm tribute on behalf of their whole family. She once said, 'How close we can be depends on who he's married to.' There was a dovetailing of things that happened during that time.' Joel and John first co-headlined a stadium together in 1994 during their 'Face to Face' tour. In the first part of the documentary, Joel admitted that he once 'resented' the comparisons to the 'Your Song' singer but eventually grew to embrace it as they continued to perform onstage together. According to People, John told Rolling Stone that they had 'so many cancelled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism' coming off their joint tour in 2010. John said of Joel in the film, 'He's going to hate me for this, but every time he goes to rehab, they've been light… I love you, Billy, and this is tough love.' After rehab, the 'Piano Man' singer took a break from the spotlight and stopped touring. 'I was disillusioned with what I thought it was all supposed to mean,' he said. 'It was like all the signs were pointing to me: Enough. And I wrote this letter to the band. 'I don't want to do this anymore. I'm gonna stop.' The second part of 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' premiered on Friday, July 25. Billy Joel opens up about fallout with Elton John over ‘hurtful' rehab remark: ‘There was bad blood'

Billy Joel and Elton John haven't always seen eye to eye. During the newly released second part of HBO's 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' documentary, Joel revealed how John's public push for him to enter rehab caused a major rift between the two music superstars. 'Elton had made a comment that he thought I needed real rehab,' the 'Movin' Out' singer said in the new doc. 'He chalked it up to, 'Oh, he's a drunk.' And that really hurt me.'
