Soccer legend Lionel Messi scores twice in Inter Miami's 4-1 win over CF Montreal

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi (10) arrives ahead of MLS soccer action against CF Montreal, in Montreal, on Saturday, July 5, 2025. (Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press) George Campbell was chasing Lionel Messi down the field, hoping to halt the Argentine superstar's run. A second later, Campbell found himself tangled up with a teammate. And Messi was smashing a shot into the top-right corner after slicing through a crowd of blue jerseys. 'He changes directions faster than anyone I've seen,' said Campbell, a CF Montreal centre back. 'Sometimes you just can't keep up.' Messi — widely regarded as one of the all-time greats — put on a show Saturday with two stellar goals and an assist to lead Inter Miami past Montreal 4-1 in MLS play. The 38-year-old scored in the first half with a curling shot into the bottom-left corner. Then he delivered a highlight-reel goal reminiscent of his FC Barcelona days, giving Miami a 4-1 lead in the 62nd minute and leaving Campbell and his teammates out of answers. 'You see the replay like, you could almost look back in hindsight and say you could do better,' Campbell said. 'But we need to live in the moment more and just make sure that when we have the opportunity, we need to make sure the ball goes in the stands and not in the back of the net.' Tadeo Allende and Telasco Segovia also scored for Miami (9-3-5) at a raucous Stade Saputo as Messi mania arrived in Montreal. Prince Owusu replied with his fourth in four games for Montreal (3-13-5). Head coach Marco Donadel's side sits last in the Eastern Conference and has just one home win in 10 outings, a 1-0 victory over New York City FC last Saturday. The sellout crowd featured plenty of Argentine blue and Inter Miami pink — one fan even wore a Messi tracksuit and goat mask. When the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner took a corner kick early on, spectators left their seats and piled into the lower parts of the stands to get a closer look. And the 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' chants were constant, whether Miami trailed or led by three goals, upsetting some Montreal players. 'We all respect them, we all admire Messi. But of course, you don't want your fans chanting his name, especially losing 4-1,' Montreal midfielder Caden Clark said. 'I understand the greatness he has, and I have respect for our fans. 'But we also don't appreciate that.' Hordes of fans also swarmed a downtown Montreal hotel to catch a glimpse of the global icon after he landed in Montreal on Friday night. Many more lined the streets with signs outside Stade Saputo hours before kickoff to watch Messi step off the team bus. Clark felt the circus around Messi's arrival was a distraction, while Campbell and Donadel said they expected a noisy evening. Not only was Messi on the pitch, fellow former Barcelona stars Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also highlighted a talent-packed starting 11. 'It's nothing strange. It's also normal, in front of us there were one or two players, maybe three, who were a great inspiration for many people,' Donadel said. Added Campbell: 'One of the most famous people in the world, so we knew that was going to happen.' It was Messi's fourth match on Canadian soil, and second in Montreal. He played his first professional game in Canada on May 11, 2024, when he was held off the scoresheet in a 3-2 Miami win over Montreal. Messi's performance Saturday was entirely different, even though it got off to a rocky start. On only his second touch of the night, Messi gifted Owusu a costly giveaway. Owusu immediately blasted a shot past Miami 'keeper Óscar Ustari from the edge of the box to open the scoring two minutes in. Miami then equalized in the 33rd minute when Allende scored with a long-range shot after receiving the ball from Messi. Miami's superstar then dribbled into the box, cut to his left foot and gave the visiting side a 2-1 lead before halftime. After Segovia put Miami ahead 3-1, Messi danced through the Montreal defence and buried his second of the night — and 12th of the season. 'I still enjoy to watch him play,' said Miami coach Javier Mascherano, a former Messi teammate with Argentina and Barcelona. 'As a coach, for me it's a privilege to coaching him. And when I say coaching him, it's a way to say that I am the coach, because no one can coach Messi.' The score was lopsided, but Miami only outshot Montreal 15-13, including 9-8 on target, while holding 58 per cent of possession. Montreal had several chances to build on its 1-0 lead in a wide-open, attacking game, but failed to capitalize before Messi took over. 'We had to be much more smart there and mature,' Donadel said. 'It was not the best way to deal with (being up) 1-0 against Miami.' UP NEXT Montreal: Hosts the Canadian Premier League's Forge FC of Hamilton in the second leg of the Canadian Championship quarterfinal Wednesday. Miami: Visits the New England Revolution on Wednesday. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 5, 2025. Daniel Rainbird, The Canadian Press

Messi makes uncharacteristic mistake, atones with two spectacular goals

The most surprising part of Lionel Messi's night wasn't the dizzying skip down the right flank, the cut inside and the crisp, perfectly-timed left-foot finish. Nor was it the charge through the middle that came later, somehow finding gaps mere inches wide, before finally bouncing off a defender's challenge and sliding home another goal, to cap off a comfortable 4-1 victory. Advertisement Messi's mystifying skills long ago came to be expected, not that they ever get old. No, the head-scratching part of Saturday evening, as Inter Miami returned to MLS action by dispatching CF Montreal with little fuss, was how it started. Within the first two minutes Messi did something extraordinarily out of character. Running to collect a loose ball in his own half and facing the Miami goal, the 2022 World Cup champion ill-advisedly knocked an errant pass toward his backline, only for it to find the feet of fast-advancing Montreal forward Prince Owusu. Owusu took it in stride, advanced on goal, and moments later the Canadian side, rooted at the foot of MLS' Eastern Conference standings, had taken a shock lead. It wouldn't take long for normal service to be resumed, however, If anything, Messi looked temporarily embarrassed and almost immediately energized by the wish to atone for his mistake. After Tadeo Allende made it 1-1, Messi's first goal to put the visitors ahead after 40 minutes was one of the most pleasing on the eye since he moved to Major League Soccer. Messi's trademark fleet-footedness saw him streak down the right, turn suddenly inwards, bamboozle three defenders and fire past goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois. Just after Telsaco Segovia made in 3-1 on the hour, Messi added another, this time bursting through the middle, picking his way through a barrage of defenders, and capping off another majestic performance. Second-minute error? Long forgotten. It is a somewhat strange time of year for the Florida side. Saturday's clash took place just hours after PSG defeated Bayern Munich in a Club World Cup quarterfinal in Atlanta. Had Inter Miami not succumbed to the French Champions League winner by a 4-0 margin last week, that's the fixture they would have been taking part in. The quick return to MLS action did not seem to have slowed them down any. Advertisement Despite that despondent ending to the Club World Cup campaign, Miami's involvement in the tournament generally deserves to be seen as a success, reaching the knockout stage and claiming a notable win over Porto in the second group match. For now, however, domestic action takes focus once again. Miami sits sixth in the Eastern Conference and is 10 points behind leader Cincinnati, but has four games in hand on account of the Club World Cup absence. Even though a strong upcoming run could potentially put Miami near or top of the standings, the level of dominance in league play is not the same as last season, when the Supporters Shield was easily secured, but the MLS title tilt ended with a shock defeat to Atlanta United in the team's first playoff series. Things have not gone all Miami way of late, and Messi's frustration following the PSG result even sparked speculation in his native Argentina that a move away from the U.S. might be on the cards. Given his performance and energy level on Saturday, he seemed content with where he's at for now.

Messi returns to MLS with spectacular double in Inter victory

Miami were playing their first MLS game in more than a month. They had advanced past the first phase of the Club World Cup but fell 4-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 last week. Messi made sure there was no lingering let-down for Javier Mascherano's side, who are aiming to improve on their curent sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 32 points from 17 matches. "It is a great night, we took the three points that were very necessary to start thinking about the MLS again," Mascherano said. "It is never easy to reintegrate into the competition after the Club World Cup, and the players have done it perfectly." Messi was a key figure throughout, although it was his miscue that led to the first goal for Montreal. His backpass fell right in front of Montreal's Prince Owusu, who fired a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Oscar Ustari to make it 1-0 after two minutes. Messi more than atoned. In the 33rd minute, Messi found Tadeo Allende outside the area and Allende chipped a shot over Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirios. In the 40th minute Messi conjured his trademark magic, cutting in from the right corner of the box, eluding Fernando Alvarez and curling the ball in at the far post for a goal that gave Miami a 2-1 halftime lead. Telasco Segovia made it 3-1 in the 60th minute with a blast from outside the area that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net. Messi bagged his second goal two minutes later, evading four defenders and finishing an outstanding solo run with a shot into the heart of the goal. Messi now has seven goals in his last four MLS matches, bringing his total to 12 in 14 games. "Leo is happy playing football," Mascherano said. "Every time he is fit, he is going to play. Clearly we have an extra advantage when he plays and we want to use that advantage as much as possible."
