Messi scores twice as Miami defeats Montreal 4-1
Luis Suárez directed a long ball from Tomás Avilés to Messi with a header, who had time to gather the ball, dribble into the box and finish with his left foot to the far post to make it 2-1 in the 40th minute.
It was the first M:S game in over a month for Miami while competing in the Club World Cup. PSG eliminated Miami 4-0 last week.
Prince Owusu gave Montreal (3-13-5) a quick lead two minutes into the game.
Tadeo Allende, assisted by Messi, scored in the 33rd minute to tie the game for Miami (9-3-5), which has won three straight, including a 3-2 win over Montreal at home on May 28.
Telasco Segovia scored in the 60th minute and Messi connected again two minutes later, again weaving through a pack of Montreal defenders. Messi has 12 goals in 14 MSL games this season.
Óscar Ustari made seven saves for Miami after a Messi giveway gave Owusu an easy goal.
Miami (8-3-5) has won back-to-back games — including a 3-2 victory over Montreal at home on May 28 — and is unbeaten in three straight.

More on that below. Apart from the stolen bases, Luis Robert Jr. has finally turned it on at the plate. He's riding an eight-game hitting streak and has a 1.023 OPS since the beginning of July, just in time to be traded to a contender. Imagine telling someone in March that we'd be one week away from the trade deadline and Juan Soto would have the same amount of stolen bases as Corbin Carroll. The wear and tear added on by pitching has seemingly stopped Shohei Ohtani from stealing bases. He's swiped just two since the start of June and it feels safe to say the 59 from last year will prove to be a drastic outlier in his career. Now, let's go over the most important stolen base trends over the past week. Fantasy Baseball Stolen Base Targets The duo of Yainer Diaz and Victor Caratini have allowed 14 stolen bases over the Astros' last nine games, most in the league. They didn't come in bunches either, just a few bags from their opponents every night. Of all catchers, Diaz has given up the most stolen bases this season with 67. He's also outside of the top-10 with 67 starts behind the plate and caught a very low 13.4% of runners. To compound the issue, Caratini has the lowest caught stealing rate of any catcher that's started at least 30 games at 11.9%. They are an excellent team to target when seeking stolen bases. Also, the White Sox have been frequently run on of late too with 12 stolen bases allowed over their last nine games. Most of which came against the Guardians in their series just before the break where Cleveland swiped seven bases in four games. Yet, all seven came in just two of those games, both of which with rookie Kyle Teel catching. He's graded out around league-average in terms of his pop time and caught stealing over expected, but has only thrown out 17.6% of runners and the aggression with which players are using against him is telling. The Guardians stole three against him in one game. All three came with a different pitcher on the mount. Then, José Ramírez took three himself in the next game off two different pitchers. Ironically, the Rays had the opposite approach against the White Sox. They've just played two games against one another so far and only attempted one stolen base against Teel. On the other hand, Chandler Simpson swiped three himself in the next game with Edgar Quero behind the plate. Teel is widely regarded as a better defender than Quero, with neither being considered stalwarts. Overall, this is another great team to target for stolen bases. Chandler Simpson Check-In It's nearly been a month since the Rays recalled Simpson from the minor leagues and he's been blazing hot since then with hits in 20 of the 23 games he's started. Overall, he has a .325 batting average and .360 on-base percentage to solidify himself as a starter. As he's gotten on base so much, of course he's been running wild too. His 11 stolen bases since June 24th – the date of his first game back – are most in the league and Tampa Bay recently moved him up to the top spot in their order. Also, they're clearly more comfortable with him defensively this time around. He's made all 23 of his starts in center field as they try to shoehorn him into that spot. Trust in a premium position and taking the reins as their lead-off hitter makes it very, very unlikely the Rays take him off the roster again. So, we can find comfort in what's confidently the best base stealer in the league going forward.

The return of 'Backyard Sports': What it took to recover lost IP rights and bring back the franchise

IP revivals are everywhere in gaming and movies right now, but the rights to beloved franchises aren't always easy to track down. Just ask Lindsay Barnett, a former elementary school teacher who made it her mission to bring "Backyard Sports" to modern consoles using several lawyers, a private investigator, and a lot of reverse engineering. The "Backyard Sports" games were an incredibly popular series of desktop PC video games in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The earliest games, developed by Humongous Entertainment, featured a series of cartoon children as possible teammates to recruit, while later installments featured kid versions of some professional players, like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter in "Backyard Baseball 2001." Though the original franchise ended a decade ago with the release of "Backyard Sports: Baseball 2015" and "Backyard Sports: NBA Basketball 2015," it made a comeback in October 2024 when Playground Productions rereleased "Backyard Baseball '97." As of July 8, fans of the series can now play "Backyard Baseball '01" too. "These games were my favorites growing up," Barnett, founder and CEO of Playground Productions, said on the Sports Report podcast (see video above or listen below). "I was a very sporty little girl in Chicago, and this was the game that made me fall in love with baseball and football. I was looking for great content for kids and especially great games that they could be playing on their computers, and this franchise was nowhere to be found." Barnett, who taught elementary public school in Chicago for nine years, explained that teaching remotely during the COVID era set her on the path to find out how to make these games accessible to children again. "['Backyard Sports'] hadn't had a game come out in almost a decade when I started looking for it," she recalled. "And so I did the normal process of first searching on Google and then asking IP lawyers — and it was not findable. One of the lawyers said, 'Hey Lindsay, you could hire a private investigator to track the rights down.' And that just sounded like a great COVID project. And so I was like, let's do that." She said it took six months to find out who owned the intellectual property rights for "Backyard Sports," but she eventually acquired them for her own production company, which she founded in 2022. Once she acquired the rights to the IP, her company also needed to obtain the rights to the individual pro players who were featured in the games. "We were able to get 28 out of the 31 players, and I was just so excited because, honestly, we did have to go player by player for the majority of them," Barnett explained. "Some of them are in the retired players union ... We wound up hiring an awesome guy named Zach Oliver to help track people down." Getting player rights wasn't the only roadblock Barnett faced while reviving a well-loved IP. She explained that she and her team have been reverse-engineering the code to make it playable on current platforms. "The process of it has actually been quite complicated because we don't have the source code," Barnett said. "It took us a little bit longer to actually reverse engineer and make it possible on mobile. And then through that process, we actually discovered new technology to be able to make it playable on PlayStation and on Nintendo Switch." Two and a half years after her journey started, "Backyard Baseball '97" was rereleased on Steam, bringing the franchise back in full force for fans new and old. The game was later released for iOS and Android in March 2025 and on PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch in June 2025. "Backyard Soccer '98" was also made available on Steam in 2024, and four other games in the beloved franchise are set to be rereleased in the coming years. "We're really inventing a playbook in some ways, which is very exciting for us because we have a big piece of IP that's independently operated, and so we have a lot of flexibility on how we bring things to market," Barnett said. "It's actually quite exciting for us because we're learning a lot, but we're able to do it with the integrity that we all share on our team, which is making sure that we're making great children's family content and we can set our own kinds of standards." Giants open camp with Jaxson Dart in the spotlight but Russell Wilson still starting quarterback
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Jaxson Dart is squarely in the spotlight as someone the New York Giants hope will be their quarterback of the future. The future is not here yet. For all the attention Dart is getting as a first-round draft pick, coach Brian Daboll made it clear when training camp opened Wednesday that the plan has not diverted from Russell Wilson being the guy at football's most important position. 'These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,' Daboll said. Wilson took all the first-team snaps in the first practice of camp, with Dart and journeyman Jameis Winston alternating going second and third. Dart threw an interception his first throw of 11-on-11 team drills, Wilson told his younger teammate to focus on the next play and the rookie's subsequent throw went for a touchdown. 'I think they're working well together,' veteran defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence said. 'Russ is a great leader, Jameis is a great leader and I see them talking to him a lot. Russ handles his business really well, so for (Dart) to learn from that and them to be unselfish to teach that to him, it's only on an up trajectory." There's little direction to go but up for the Giants, who tied for the worst record in the NFL last season at 3-14. That is one reason fourth-year general manager Joe Schoen turned over the quarterback part of the roster almost completely — with local cult hero Tommy DeVito the lone holdover. Wilson at age 36 got a contract for this season worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed. And New York traded a second-round pick and two third-rounders to move up to take Dart 25th, several weeks after signing Winston. Scouting Dart from afar at Mississippi and watching him up close in offseason workouts, the Giants like what they're witnessing so far. 'You saw leadership, you saw arm talent, you saw athleticism and he's a rookie,' Schoen said. 'He's got a long way to go, and he's got a really good supporting cast in there to help. We've got a really good coaching staff as well, so he's in a good spot right now.' That spot is in reserve, though Daboll would not say if the backup job is up for grabs between Dart and Winston. Only that when the season starts on Sept. 7 at NFC East rival Washington, Wilson will be under center if healthy. Asked about that certainty, Wilson said he's 'always just focused on being the best version of myself every day.' A teammate two seasons ago in Denver, tight end Chris Manhertz believes Wilson is qualified to handle this situation thanks to 'all the traits of a good quarterback.' 'Attention to detail, great leader and that kind of leadership kind of permeates throughout the whole offense, the whole team,' Manhertz said. 'He's been in this league for a while, and he's had a lot of success in this league and it's not an accident. A lot of the things that he has a quarterback, like getting everybody on the same page, leading the charge, leading by example — all of those things are kind of contagious.' Malik Nabers' toe saga The toe injury that kept standout receiver Malik Nabers off the field this spring has healed enough that he was full go for the start of his second pro training camp. But Nabers said he does not know if it eventually will go away or even if surgery might be needed. '(There has been) talk about it, just never really came to a complete thought in mind for me to do it,' Nabers said. 'But I've been managing it well, been running around feeling pretty good. Everything has been going good with the rehab, so my toe's feeling better. I'm just happy to be out there with my guys.' Nabers in his impressive rookie year ranked fifth in the league with 109 catches and seventh with 1,204 yards. With big expectations on him, he said the toe ailment will be watched and handled throughout camp. 'It's something that I've got to take up with Dabes and the guys upstairs and the training staff, but I think we've got a great plan,' Nabers said. Andrew Thomas by Week 1? While Nabers and Lawrence, among others, receiving no injury designation to start camp was good news on the health front, starting left tackle Andrew Thomas landed on the physically unable to perform list as he works back from surgery in October to repair a Lisfranc injury in his right foot. Schoen said Thomas 'should be ready for the opener' but left the door open for a longer recovery period. 'Things change: You can never be 100%, but we're going to take it day by day with him," Schoen said.
