MLA flags ‘illegal' collection of parking fee from visitors at Chamundi Hills in Mysuru

Drawing the Mysuru district administration's attention to the alleged illegal collection of parking fee from visitors at the foot of the Chamundi Hills, MLA for Krishnaraja T.S. Srivatsa has urged the authorities to immediately book a criminal case against the persons involved in the same. Mr. Srivatsa told reporters in Mysuru that he came across some persons stopping vehicles of visitors near the Chamundi Hills and collecting a parking fee from them. When inquired, the persons claimed that they had obtained a tender to collect parking fee from visitors keeping their vehicles at the foothills, and even shared yellow coloured tokens bearing 'Chamundi Hills' and 'parking fee of ₹10' for two wheelers. However, Mr. Srivatsa said that he sought a clarification about the same from the Tahsildar of Mysuru taluk, as well as from the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) of the Chamundi Hills Gram Panchayat. When both the officials denied having issued any permission or tender to collect parking fee from vehicle owners at the foot of the Chamundi Hills, the MLA said he immediately contacted Krishnaraja police officials and asked them to gather information about the persons behind the collection of 'illegal' parking fees and book a case against them. A large number of people visit the Chamundi Hills during Ashada Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and this is being exploited by unscrupulous people to extort money, alleged Mr. Srivatsa. Mr. Srivatsa also raised doubts over police officials of the city not having any information about this activity. 'It cannot happen without the knowledge of the police because the persons collecting the parking fee stand near the barricades put up by the police,' the MLA alleged. He said that he had also spoken to Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikant Reddy about the matter and demanded that a criminal case be booked against the persons involved.

Two-thirds of Tahsildars await repatriation since Assembly polls

Hyderabad: Two-thirds of the Mandal Revenue Officers (MROs), also known as Tahsildars, who were deployed to new districts during the Assembly polls in 2023, are still awaiting repatriation to their previous working districts. Out of more than 300 officials affected, fewer than a hundred have been transferred back to their original postings, with the remainder continuing to wait. This marks the first instance in Telangana where these officials, who anticipated repatriation within months, have continued to serve in their newly allocated districts. 'In the past, repatriation occurred not only in Telangana but also in the unified Andhra Pradesh within days of the polls,' informed official sources. 'Similar to the present state of Andhra Pradesh, during the YSR's time, all officials were repatriated in a single stroke of a pen. However, this time, despite most applying, the government has failed to pay heed, except for a few.' Interestingly, among those who have been repatriated to 'worthwhile' mandals, some are now unwilling to return to their original places, thus complicating the case for the majority who wish to return. For instance, one Tahsildar has applied for a key mandal like Bhadrachalam from a smaller mandal. Scores have opted for Khammam from neighbouring, less significant mandals. In southern Telangana, an official has applied for Nagarkurnool from a smaller mandal. 'There could be around 40 to 50 who wish to stay back. The big mandals are much sought after. Those who were posted in Rangareddy and Medchal do not wish to yield,' said an official posted within the city. The official clarified that the government is not keen on transferring Tahsildars to native districts, with non-native districts subject to vacancy availability. Meanwhile, some officials who were astute enough to manage staying back and working in local collectorates during the elections have received 'rewarding' posts. 'There is a feeling of injustice amongst those who left their places during polls. Some officials are enjoying at native places, while most are suffering in far-away places. The government is not ready to transfer at this juncture,' added the official. Disturbingly, some MROs have retired while still waiting for repatriation. One official, despite applying on health grounds, could not get approval from higher authorities. In an application to the CCLA (Chief Commissioner of Land Administration), the official, who was posted approximately 150 km from the State Capital and undergoing treatment at a corporate hospital following surgery, urged the Commissioner to be retained in the previously allotted district.

Minister releases fingerlings in lake in Namakkal

Minister for Adi Dravidar Welfare M. Mathiventhan released fingerlings in a lake in the district on Saturday. As part of the River Ranching Programme, the Minister released 25,000 native fish varieties at Mathiyampatti Lake in Vennandur panchayat in Rasipuram taluk. At the function, the Minister said that in the agricultural budget for 2025-26, Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam announced that fingerlings would be stocked in water bodies to increase the native fish varieties and prevent them from extinction. Based on it, in Namakkal district, the target was fixed to stock four lakh fingerlings in water bodies that come under the control of the Rural Development department. Already, in 2024-25, two lakh native variety fingerlings were stocked in the water bodies in Namakkal district, the Minister added. Later, Mr. Mathiventhan laid the foundation and started construction works for the Rasipuram Tahsildar office at ₹5 crore. To be constructed on 12,658 sq. feet, the two storey building will have Tahsildar's room, a computer room, an office room, toilets, and a registration room. The Minister also participated in the ground breaking ceremony for constructing an overhead water tank at ₹18 lakh in Minnakkal panchayat, and laying cement concrete roads on Arunthathiyar Street in Komarapalayam at ₹20 lakh. District Collector Durgamoorthi, Rajya Sabha member K.R.N. Rajeshkumar, and officials participated.

Third Mumbai farmers foil land takeover bid, govt withdraws controversial notices

NAVI MUMBAI: In a major victory for farmers in Uran, the Maharashtra government has withdrawn controversial notices that threatened to take over agricultural land left fallow for two consecutive years. The decision came after a massive protest march on Thursday to the Uran tehsil office, where villagers alleged a backdoor attempt to forcibly acquire their land under the guise of a central government scheme. Navi Mumbai, India - July 3, 2025:Sudhakar Patil explaining the provisions of Govt resolution to Tahsildar Third Mumbai villagers protest succeeds in getting `acquisition of uncultivated landÕ notices withdrawn in Navi Mumbai, India, on Thursday, July 3, 2025. (Photo by Bachchan Kumar/ HT PHOTO) (HT PHOTO) The farmers, under the banner of the MMRDA KSC Navnagar Virodhi Shetkari Samiti Raigad, accused the state of misusing the Agri Stack initiative—a digital land record and agriculture database scheme—to dispossess them of their ancestral land for the ambitious Karnala-Sai-Chirner New Town project, also dubbed 'Third Mumbai'. Over 124 villages across Uran, Panvel and Pen talukas are opposing the proposed township, which they claim is being designed to benefit powerful builders and developers at the cost of local communities. 'The notices were a ploy to declare our lands abandoned and hand them over for urban development,' said Sudhakar Patil, president of the committee. According to Patil, farmers began receiving show-cause notices from June 26, demanding an explanation for leaving land uncultivated for two years. The notices warned that failure to respond within four days would be interpreted as consent, and the government would proceed to take over the plots. 'This is nothing short of land grabbing,' Patil said. 'The government made no attempt to understand why the land wasn't cultivated—whether it was because of sea water ingress, mangrove growth, flooding, or declining fertility due to industrial pollution. Instead of helping us revive our soil, they want to hand it over to capitalists.' After the farmers marched to the Uran tehsildar's office, the local administration was forced to backtrack. In a written communication to the farmers, Uran Tehsildar Uddhav Kadam confirmed that the notices had been withdrawn. 'The intent was to encourage participation in the Agri Stack scheme, which is meant to benefit farmers. However, there was a misunderstanding that it was a land acquisition move. Hence, we have cancelled the notices,' Kadam said. The victory has boosted the morale of villagers who say they are already reeling under the impact of large-scale infrastructure projects such as CIDCO's NAINA scheme and the Navi Mumbai airport. 'We've lost homes, farms, and entire villages. Our houses have been declared illegal and demolished. Now they want to snatch away what little land we have left,' said Rupesh Patil, general secretary of the farmers' committee. The farmers have vowed to continue their resistance against the New Town project, which they say threatens to erase rural communities in favour of real estate profits.
