No appeal, no reinstatement, says Zahid
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi speaking to party members at the Bentong Umno division's delegates' meeting today. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno members suspended or sacked from the party must file a formal appeal in order to be reinstated as a member of the party, says party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid said only two leaders have appealed their suspensions so far, namely former MPs Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and Salim Sharif. Tajuddin's suspension was lifted in November. Zahid said he respected the motion by the Sembrong Umno division for its former divisional chief Hishammuddin Hussein to be reinstated as a party member. However, the party's official procedures must be followed. 'Any polemic or public statement that isn't followed by formal action will hold no value in terms of party procedures,' he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia. Hishammuddin Hussein. Hishammuddin, who is Sembrong MP, was suspended by Umno for six years in January 2023. He said then that he would not appeal as he was never informed of the reason for the disciplinary action against him. Zahid had said last month that he would leave it to the Umno Supreme Council to decide on the Sembrong division's motion for Hishammuddin's reinstatement. However, he pointed out that Hishammuddin, a former Umno vice-president, has yet to submit an appeal or apology. Zahid said Umno respected the voice of the grassroots and that the party remained open to reinstating sacked or suspended members. However, these members must be sincere and remorseful over their past actions to ensure they were not seeking the reinstatement for their own political agenda. 'We are not closing the door totally, but we are also not forgetting the past hurts. If accusations had been made publicly, then apologies must also be made publicly.' Besides Hishammuddin, former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan was also suspended from the party, not long after calling for Zahid to step down as party president following the results of the 2022 general election, when Umno won just 26 seats. Former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin and former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar were sacked from Umno for breaching party discipline during the election campaign.

Hishammuddin's suspension not discussed at Supreme Council meeting, says Zahid
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it would be up to the Supreme Council to decide on whether to lift former vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein's six-year suspension if the matter was raised. BANGI : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says the possibility of lifting Hishammuddin Hussein's six-year suspension was not raised at the party's Supreme Council meeting last night. Zahid, however, said he would bring the matter up to the Supreme Council 'when the time comes'. 'And they will decide,' he told reporters here. Zahid was asked to comment on a video Hishammuddin had posted on social media in which the former vice-president hinted that he was unlikely to appeal his suspension from the party, saying it was a matter of principle. Hishammuddin was suspended from Umno for six years in January 2023. Media reports citing the suspension letter said it was due to a violation of Clause 20.9 of the party's constitution, though no further details were provided. In December last year, calls emerged for Hishammuddin to return to Umno following the Supreme Council's decision to lift the suspension of former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. Zahid was reported as saying the party was open to accepting Hishammuddin's return, provided he filed an appeal. Meanwhile, a Supreme Council member who spoke on condition of anonymity said that Johor Umno chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi did not attend the Supreme Council meeting last night. Onn Hafiz had previously pledged to bring forward a motion by the Sembrong Umno division to reinstate Hishammuddin. 'There was no discussion about it,' the source told FMT when asked if the meeting discussed Hishammuddin's membership. On June 21, the Sembrong Umno division in Johor passed a motion urging the party leadership to lift Hishammuddin's suspension immediately and unconditionally. The source explained that typically, all motions passed by Umno divisions would be collected, filtered and reviewed by a committee at the party headquarters. 'These motions will then be handed over to another committee tasked with deciding whether to act on them, discuss them or reject them.' The source also said Zahid only repeated what he had previously stated – that any suspended member must file an appeal if they wished to have their suspension lifted. The source added Zahid informed the meeting that Hishammuddin knew the reason behind his suspension. FMT has reached out to Onn Hafiz for comment.

Suspended ex-Jempol MP Mohd Salim makes second bid to rejoin Umno, insists he's ‘proven my loyalty'
SEREMBAN, June 30 — Former Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif has made a second bid to return to Umno after the party leaders signalled a softer stance. Mohd Salim, who was suspended for six years in January 2023 for breaching party discipline, said his first appeal was in 2024 and his second in April. 'I sincerely hope the party leadership will consider my appeals. 'Although I have been suspended, I have remained loyal to Umno and have been actively supporting members, especially in Jempol,' he was quoted as saying by The Star in an article today. He rubbished speculation that he would quit the party for another. 'Umno has been my party from day one. Although there had been lots of talk previously that I would quit the party and join another, I have proven my loyalty to Umno,' he was quoted as saying. In recent days, Umno's top two leaders indicated that they are open to reinstating several suspended veterans but required the affected members to make a formal application. Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said only two suspended members had formally applied for reinstatement: Mohd Salim and former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. Tajuddin's suspension was lifted on November 24 last year, with his membership reinstated immediately. Zahid and his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan advised former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to write in after Sembrong Umno called for the latter's six-year suspension to be lifted.

Supreme Council to decide on motion to reinstate Hisham, says Zahid
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (left) previously said the party was open to accepting Hishammuddin Hussein back into the fold, but that he should submit an appeal. PETALING JAYA : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he is leaving it to the party's Supreme Council to decide on the motion to reinstate Hishammuddin Hussein as a member, as the former vice-president has yet to submit an appeal or apology following his suspension. Zahid, the rural and regional development minister, said the Sembrong MP had not contested the suspension handed down in January 2023. 'We will wait for the motion to be brought by Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi for discussion in the political bureau,' he said at a press conference today. The Sembrong Umno division recently passed a motion urging the party leadership to revoke the six-year suspension of its former division chief. Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno chief, pledged to bring the motion to the party's top leadership. Umno suspended Hishammuddin's membership for six years in January 2023. Media reports at the time cited a suspension letter stating that he was penalised for breaching Clause 20.9 of the party constitution, although no details were disclosed. In December last year, there were renewed calls for Hishammuddin to return to Umno after the Supreme Council lifted the suspension of former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. Zahid was previously reported as saying that Umno was open to accepting Hishammuddin back into the fold, but that he should follow Tajuddin's example by submitting an appeal. Hishammuddin has refused to do so, saying he was never informed of the reason for his suspension.

Hishammuddin must take lead, says analyst over calls for reinstatement
Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein previously said he refused to appeal as he was never informed of the reasons for his suspension. PETALING JAYA : Former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein must speak up if he hopes to have his six-year suspension lifted, says a political analyst. Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said calls for Hishammuddin to be reinstated would ring hollow unless he himself does not appeal. 'If Hishammuddin remains silent and doesn't at least express a desire to appeal against his suspension, Umno leaders are under no obligation to accept him back,' he told FMT. Mazlan was commenting on Sembrong Umno's motion urging the party leadership to reinstate its former division chief. Johor Umno chief Onn Hafiz Ghazi, who officiated the Sembrong division meeting yesterday, pledged to bring the motion to the party's top leadership. 'It's not for the party leadership to come looking for him, Hishammuddin must take the initiative,' said Mazlan. Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was reported as saying the party was open to accepting Hishammuddin's return, provided he followed Tajuddin's example and filed an appeal. However, Hishammuddin, who is still the MP for Sembrong, said he refused to appeal as he was never informed of the reasons for his suspension. Mazlan saidt the Sembrong division's motion should be seriously considered by the party, as it could likely signal Hishammuddin's willingness to return to active politics. 'He continues to support the government in Parliament and hasn't joined any other party. This shows he remains loyal, much like Tajuddin. 'The motion from Sembrong Umno is relevant and deserves careful attention from the party,' he said, adding that Hishammuddin, seen as a future leader, could help strengthen the party in Johor. Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Hishammuddin's experience could help boost grassroots support for Umno ahead of the 16th general election, even if he is not vocal as former information chief Shahril Hamdan, who was also suspended, or former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who was expelled. 'Reinstating suspended or expelled figures can help strengthen the party, as these individuals have their own grassroots support and loyal followers,' Azmi said.
