Supreme Council to decide on motion to reinstate Hisham, says Zahid

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (left) previously said the party was open to accepting Hishammuddin Hussein back into the fold, but that he should submit an appeal.
PETALING JAYA : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he is leaving it to the party's Supreme Council to decide on the motion to reinstate Hishammuddin Hussein as a member, as the former vice-president has yet to submit an appeal or apology following his suspension.
Zahid, the rural and regional development minister, said the Sembrong MP had not contested the suspension handed down in January 2023.
'We will wait for the motion to be brought by Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi for discussion in the political bureau,' he said at a press conference today.
The Sembrong Umno division recently passed a motion urging the party leadership to revoke the six-year suspension of its former division chief.
Onn Hafiz, who is also the Johor Umno chief, pledged to bring the motion to the party's top leadership.
Umno suspended Hishammuddin's membership for six years in January 2023.
Media reports at the time cited a suspension letter stating that he was penalised for breaching Clause 20.9 of the party constitution, although no details were disclosed.
In December last year, there were renewed calls for Hishammuddin to return to Umno after the Supreme Council lifted the suspension of former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
Zahid was previously reported as saying that Umno was open to accepting Hishammuddin back into the fold, but that he should follow Tajuddin's example by submitting an appeal.
Hishammuddin has refused to do so, saying he was never informed of the reason for his suspension.

Ahmad Zahid Outlines Four Prerequisites To Retake Lumut

LUMUT, July 6 (Bernama) -- UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi outlined four preprequisites to enable the party to retake the Lumut parliamentary seat, along with the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16). The prerequisites include unity and uniting the Lumut UMNO Division members and fostering ties with Barisan Nasional (BN) component members. 'Lumut UMNO and BN must be united, there's no room for discord. Our political enemy isn't strong, but internal weakness resulted in a lack of confidence in our own party that weakens our fight. bootstrap slideshow 'The old culture of backstabbing, blaming leaders should stop immedately. The main prerequisite to winning is uniting Lumut UMNO Division,' he said during the officiation of the 2025 Lumut UMNO Division Delegates' meeting here today, in the presence of Perak UMNO liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut UMNO Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir. Ahmad Zahid said that UMNO cannot retake the seats on their own but required help from compoment partners like MIC and MCA, and stressed that UMNO members have to abandon the old culture and prove to partners that the party has changed. Ahmad Zahid also said that winning the social media battleground and approaching voters in more strategic ways were also prerequisites. bootstrap slideshow 'Social media is the new battlefield. UMNO Youth and UMNO Puteri need to be champions in the digital narrative. Reach voters through relevant and convincing social media content is very important to rebuild public trust. 'This (GE16) is the last chance to retake all three seats in Lumut, don't waste it,' he added. -- BERNAMA

Over 300 people rally in Shah Alam, call for Anwar to resign

A few hundred people gathered at the Section 9 parking lot in Shah Alam today, in a protest against the government and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. SHAH ALAM : Over 300 people participated in a protest rally here today, calling for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to resign. The protest at the Section 9 parking lot was held to voice concerns over several issues the group claims are affecting the people, including the rising cost of living and the expansion of the sales and service tax (SST) since July 1. The participants began gathering at 8am under police supervision, holding banners and placards with the words 'Turun Anwar' (Anwar step down), 'Rakyat Susah' (the people are struggling), and 'Rakyat Terbeban' (the people are burdened). Among those present were Pejuang information chief Rafique Rashid Ali, PAS Youth deputy chief Hanif Jamaluddin, Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar, Kelantan PAS Youth chief Kamal Mohamad, former PKR leader Ezam Nor, and Malaysian Islamic Students Coalition (Gamis) president Azamuddin Sahar. Speaking to the media, Hanif said today's programme was just a small protest to raise awareness for the planned major rally at Dataran Merdeka on July 26. He said several NGOs and other political leaders are expected to attend the major rally, including former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang. Meanwhile, Ezam claimed that the people are disappointed with Anwar's leadership, as he had failed to fulfil the promises made when he was still in the opposition. 'Before, he made bold promises on lowering fuel prices. Now that he's in power, he hasn't done it. 'We are not here to fight the authorities, nor are we here to fight the police. We just want to make our voices heard to the government,' he said. 'Before, it was only the common people who were angry, now even the rich are upset. All of them have been subject to (various) taxes.'

Umno confirms alliance commitment ahead of GE16

LUMUT: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that Umno will not contest solo in the 16th General Election. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Umno president, stressed the party's ongoing commitment to Barisan Nasional. He also dismissed claims that the party's recent losses in several by-elections were due to its alliance with component parties within Barisan and Pakatan Harapan (PH). 'Umno and Barisan have never contested on their own. I promise and declare that we will contest under the Barisan flag in the upcoming general election," he said, adding that it would not sideline its partners: MIC, MCA, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and Pakatan. 'This idea of going solo is being voiced not just in Kedah, but also yesterday in Johor, I heard the same sentiment,' he said when officiating the Lumut Division Umno Representative Meeting at Dewan Merdeka, Majlis Perbandaran Manjung on Sunday (July 6). Zahid added that while Barisan may contest under its banner, it would do so with the support of allies in Pakatan and other component parties. 'They have helped us by reaching out and engaging Chinese voters in support of the BN candidate (for the Mahkota state seat), and we won by a margin of over 20,000... thanks to the support from our friends in other parties,' he said. He emphasised that the setbacks in the last general election serve as a lesson in political strategy, which Umno and Barisan are now adjusting to achieve greater success in the upcoming elections.
