BJP bringing up Katchatheevu issue to divert attention from Centre's failure to secure T.N. fishermen's rights: TNCC chief

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Saturday said the BJP was raking up the 50-year-old Katchatheevu issue to divert attention away from the Union government's failure to ensure Tamil fishermen don't face violence and harrassment from the Sri Lankan Navy. In a statement, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar was trying to cover-up the actions of the Sri Lankan Navy against Tamil Nadu fishermen over the last 11 years of BJP rule at the Centre. He also clarified that Katchatheevu was not ceded to Sri Lanka during Emergency. 'The External Affairs Minister has made factually incorrect statements. Emergency was not in effect when the agreement [to cede the island] was signed on June 26, 1974. On July 23, 1974, the then External Affairs Minister Swaran Singh tabled a report in the Lok Sabha and addressed Parliament. All political parties, including the BJP, participated and voiced their opinions,' he said. 'After the Congress government, did Prime Minister Vajpayee, during his six-year tenure, or Prime Minister Modi, during his 11-year rule, ever hold talks with the Sri Lankan Prime Minister about reclaiming Katchatheevu? If Katchatheevu was truly the root cause of the fishermen's problems, the Indian government should have raised this with Sri Lanka,' Mr. Selvaperunthagai added. He said: 'Tamil Nadu fishermen are not arrested near Katchatheevu. Instead, they are arrested when they unintentionally cross the maritime boundary into Sri Lankan waters, especially during nighttime fishing. Therefore, the BJP government must hold talks with Sri Lanka to secure fishing rights in those waters based on the livelihoods of Tamil Nadu's fishermen.'

Lord Murugan will annihilate BJP in '26 polls: TNCC president Selvaperunthagai

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai launched a scathing attack on the BJP, accusing the party of promoting communal politics and undermining Tamil identity. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore airport on Sunday, he said, 'Tamil God Murugan will perform a 'Soorasamharam' (divine annihilation) of the BJP in the 2026 Assembly elections.' He accused the BJP of trying to manipulate religious sentiments for political gain, particularly through the recent announcement of the 'Murugan maanadu' in Madurai. 'Why is there a need for such a conference? Just like they politicised Lord Ram in Ayodhya, they are now trying to do the same with Murugan in Tamil Nadu. Even Lord Ram has distanced himself from the BJP. Lord Murugan belongs to Tamil soil and will reject those who betray Tamil values.' Selvaperunthagai also criticised the BJP-led central government for attempting to impose Hindi and a three-language policy in Tamil Nadu. 'Under Congress, we upheld the two-language policy. Now, the BJP is trying to push a third language. They won't let people worship in Tamil and want Sanskrit-only rituals. How can Tamil God Murugan accept this?' he asked.

Sanitary workers clean sewer lines without safety gear in Pallipalayam municipality

NAMAKKAL: Sanitary workers were reportedly seen cleaning blocked sewer lines without wearing protective gear in Pallipalayam municipality in Salem district. After recent rain, several areas in the municipality faced issues with blocked sewer lines. Sewer-mixed rainwater overflowed in several areas. The municipality sent sanitation workers to resolve these blockages. However, sanitary workers were working under unsafe conditions without wearing gloves and other protective gear, residents said. "The Tamil Nadu govt has been advised by the courts, including the Madras high court, on multiple occasions to train sanitary workers to utilise appropriate safety gear when handling waste," said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) spokesman Dr PV Senthil. However, the recommendations were not followed, he said. 'Given the current inability to differentiate between hazardous and non-hazardous waste in public spaces, there is an increasing concern about the potential risks this poses to sanitary workers,' he added. 'People suffering from diseases are likely to spit in public areas. Sanitary workers contract diseases when they use bare hands to remove blocks," Senthil remarked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indian Stewardess Makes Headlines Worldwide medalmerit Learn More Undo Senthil urged the Pallipalayam municipality to educate its sanitary workers on the importance of using proper safety gear. When TOI contacted him for a comment, Pallipalayam municipality commissioner V Dayalan stated that all sanitary workers were equipped with safety gear like gumboots, gloves and helmets while cleaning the sewer lines. "We continuously educate them to use the safety gear at all times," he added, assuring that he would ensure compliance moving forward.

The State will neither forgive nor forget ‘anti-Tamil Nadu policies' of BJP, says TNCC president Selvaperunthagai

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Monday responded to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement that a BJP-AIADMK government would be formed in the State in 2026, saying the State would neither forget nor forgive the 'anti-Tamil Nadu policies' of the BJP-led government at the Centre. He said a BJP government in Tamil Nadu would always remain a 'mirage'. In a statement, he termed as hypocritical Mr. Shah's remarks that he regretted he couldn't speak Tamil. '...what better proof is needed of the government's betrayal than the fact that it had allocated only ₹24 crore over three years for Classical Tamil, while granting ₹664 crore for Sanskrit, a language spoken by only 24,000 people? How will Mr. Shah answer for depriving Tamil Nadu of ₹2,152 crore under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan as a punishment for opposing Hindi imposition through the National Education Policy? Since 1968, Tamil Nadu has followed the two-language policy of Tamil and English,' he said. As for Mr. Shah's claims about the grant of more funds to Tamil Nadu, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said, 'According to official data, in the past seven years, the BJP-led government at the Centre has collected ₹7.38 lakh crore in direct taxes, the GST, and cesses from Tamil Nadu, but returned only ₹2.56 lakh crore to the State. After exploiting Tamil Nadu financially, what evidence does Mr. Shah have to prove his claim that more funds have been given to the State?'

Centre has diverted funds due to Tamil Nadu to other states: TNCC chief

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai on Saturday accused the BJP-led central govt of collecting taxes from Tamil Nadu without releasing the corresponding funds to the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He condemned the Centre's move to reduce Lok Sabha seats in south India under the guise of constituency delimitation. Speaking to reporters at the Coimbatore International Airport on Saturday, Selvaperunthagai alleged that funds due to Tamil Nadu were being withheld and diverted to other states. 'Why the BJP govt, which exploits the blood and sweat of the people of Tamil Nadu, has not released funds for school education or disaster relief,' he asked. He accused the Centre of showing a stepmotherly attitude towards the state. The TNCC chief said the proposed delimitation would adversely affect southern states and it could render southern votes and parliamentary representation insignificant if carried out as the BJP desired. He warned that northern MPs would dominate decision-making, leaving little or no voice for the south. Commenting on Union home minister Amit Shah's visit to Madurai, he alleged that it was an attempt to create confusion and gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu. However, he asserted that such efforts would fail, as the people clearly understood the BJP's intentions. He reiterated that there was no place for the BJP or the RSS in the state.
