Jets' Running Back 'Plan' Not Ideal For Breece Hall
Jets' Running Back 'Plan' Not Ideal For Breece Hall originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Jets running back Breece Hall is entering a career-defining 2025 season with Aaron Glenn and Tanner Engstrand. Advertisement Playing on the final year of his rookie deal, Hall's future in the Big Apple is murky at best, with his name being thrown up all offseason as a trade possibility, and Glenn already stating he wants to use three backs in Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis in the offense. That's not ideal for a player looking to earn a new contract. And this isn't ideal either. Jets X-Factor's Michael Nania suggests that while Hall might be the bellcow back, splitting the carries with Allen and Davis might be how the offense operates. 'One potential plan for the Jets could work as follows: On every other drive, they give Hall a rest, rotating between Allen and Davis on the non-Hall drives,' Nania wrote. Advertisement 'Their downhill running styles are ideal for keeping the Jets on schedule with positive gains while Hall sits, allowing him to keep his legs fresh and come back in with the energy to unleash home runs." That will be tough if snaps are divided up between three players. But that feels like the way it will go under Engstrand, who wants to use a Detroit Lions-like style that has multiple backs being used. Advertisement Hall wants a new contract and to show the NFL world he can be the dominant force he knows he can be, but this latest "plan" is going to make achieving that awfully tough. Jets' Offense Predicted To Have Distinct Running Flavor
Jets' Offense Predicted To Have Distinct Running Flavor originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The way forward for the New York Jets, at least this year under Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, seems to be rather straightforward. Advertisement With a running quarterback in Justin Fields, coupled with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen behind a stout and perhaps underrated offensive line, the Jets will be running the ball and a lot. Well, that's the plan anyway. With Engstrand coming from the Detroit Lions, who have boasted a stellar run game the past couple of seasons, The Athletic's Jacob Robinson thinks that the Jets will try to replicate that. "It's no secret that the Jets offense plans to run the ball a lot, but we still don't know how this talented backfield will split," Robinson writes. "RB Breece Hall is ready for a three-down role, but with OC Tanner Engstrand hailing from Detroit, The Athletic's Jets beat reporter Zack Rosenblatt suspects that Hall plays the Jahmyr Gibbs role, with Braelon Allen as the David Montgomery-type. Expect their quarterback to run plenty, too." Advertisement New York Jets running back Breece Hall (20) runs with the ball© Kevin R. / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Hall has shown he can be a dependable back, both as a runner and pass catcher, while Allen, albeit fleetingly in his rookie season, showed flashes of his bruising potential. Now, the pair are behind a good offensive line and have Engstrand and Glenn, both of whom have ideas on how the Lions ran their offense, so, there will no doubt be some familiarity there. The question is, can Fields bring it all together? We know his ability as a runner, but if there isn't the threat of him passing downfield, defenses will stack the box and stop the run. So, while the offense will be run-heavy, Fields has to show he can be a consistent passer to keep defenders from crashing down and stuffing run after run. Advertisement The plan of attack seems simple under Engstrand. Let's see if the players can carry out his vision. Flashy Jets QB Justin Fields Projected To 'Break Out' With Major 'If'
Flashy Jets QB Justin Fields Projected To 'Break Out' With Major 'If' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields will enter the 2025 season with the ability to squash the narratives surrounding him. Advertisement After four years in the league, with the Chicago Bears and the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, Fields hasn't consistently shown that he can be a full-time starter in the league. But under coordinator Tanner Engstrand, could he? That'll be the hope. With Garrett Wilson as his main weapon, a solid offensive line, and a run game led by Breece Hall, Fields does have some tools to work with, but some are skeptical of whether he can bring it all together. The Athletic thinks he can but on one condition. "His no-nonsense approach is winning over teammates and coaches, but can it translate to on-field success?" The Athletic writes. "If they add a No. 2 receiver, this might be the best supporting cast of the former Bear's career, which gives the 26-year-old a chance to consistently play to the potential he's flashed." Advertisement New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields (7).John Jones-Imagn Images Behind Wilson are Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard. That is a solid duo, but not great. And that's where The Athletic's rumor-like suggestion comes in. Free agents Keenan Allen, Amari Cooper, and Gabriel Davis are the top players still available, but we aren't sure Aaron Glenn, who has overseen a youth movement this offseason, would want to add veterans to the mix. Of course, there are pros to getting, say, Allen in the building to pair him with Wilson or Cooper as a third receiver, which would give Fields some different avenues to go with the football. The run game will be crucial in the success of the offense, but giving Fields more than just Wilson as a go-to weapon might give him the best chance to "break out" in 2025. Is a breakout season coming for Jets RB Braelon Allen?
New York Jets rookie running back Braelon Allen was among the team's surprise performers in 2024. The fourth-round selection quickly earned reps in a backfield that was supposed to be dominated by Breece Hall. Allen concluded his first season by rushing for 334 yards and two touchdowns, adding 148 receiving yards and an additional score to his offensive totals. There's reason to believe Allen will continue elevating his performance as a sophomore in 2025. New offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand helped oversee a Detroit Lions offense that leaned on two running backs to be productive. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn also had a front-row seat to the David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs tandem. Advertisement Pro Football Focus recently compiled a list of five sophomore players who are second-year breakout candidates for fantasy football purposes. Allen made the cut. "Allen averaged a low 3.6 yards per carry, but he graded well thanks to his excellent play in short-yardage situations," Nathan Jahnke wrote. "Allen ran the ball 16 times when the Jets needed two yards or less for a first down, and he converted 14 of them. He averaged 3.3 yards per carry on those runs, while the league average was 3.2. His 90.0 rushing grade on those runs was the best among running backs. "The goal is for Allen to be the next David Montgomery. The coaching staff needs to use him in that role, the offense needs to play well enough for Allen to score enough points, and Justin Fields can't be used on the tush push. While that is a lot, there is similarly a lot for any other late-round running back, and this one doesn't require an injury to a starter." It's fair to assume the Jets will attempt to use Allen in the Montgomery role. Expect a run-heavy offense with Engstrand running the show, and a dual-threat Justin Fields under center. Allen could enjoy a breakout campaign in a hyper-specific role. This article originally appeared on Jets Wire: PFF: Breakout season coming for Jets RB Braelon Allen

Jets' Offensive Line Key To Justin Fields' Revival?
Jets' Offensive Line Key To Justin Fields' Revival? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Justin Fields arrives in the Big Apple looking to lead the New York Jets' regime under Aaron Glenn, while also trying to establish himself as a genuine starter in the league. Advertisement Being in the league for four years, Fields has only shown glimpses of his talents, mostly as a runner, which we know he is a dangerous prospect, but his passing needs more refinement. But what if Fields' biggest calling card in 2025 is as a runner? Given the Jets' want to run the football under coordinator Tanner Engstrand, maybe Justin could be part of that? For Bleacher Report, the offensive line's ability to create running lanes might be key in Fields' on-field resurgence becoming a reality. "In the 2022 season, Justin Fields ran for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns, finishing seventh leaguewide in yards on the ground and tied for 12th in rushing scores," Bleacher Report writes. "He also took a league-high 55 sacks that year. Advertisement "Now, imagine what Fields could do with an offensive line that features three recent first-rounders, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou, along with more opportunities to score rushing touchdowns." © Brad Penner-Imagn Images Yes, Fields does have that 1,000-yard season back in 2022, but since then? He hasn't surpassed 657 yards, and last year, had he played all 17 regular-season games, he would have posted just 491 rushing yards. Will that number be higher in 2025? That is something to aim at. Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, and Isaiah Davis will all get their fair share of reps at running back, but if we can sprinkle in Fields and his rushing ability, suddenly the Jets' run game could look rather threatening. Advertisement Of course, Fields will still have to prove he can be a consistent passer, but being able to fall back on his rushing talents might be a good way to get by in 2025.
