Michael B. Jordan's Thomas Crown Affair Loses Lead Actress, Reason Revealed

Michael B. Jordan's The Thomas Crown Affair reimagining has lost its main actress, with Deadline reporting that Taylor Russell has exited the film. Why did Taylor Russell leave the Thomas Crown Affair movie? According to Deadline's report, Russell left the project due to creative differences. No word of what those differences might have been were mentioned, though, so it's unclear exactly what the issue was. Deadline notes that re-casting for Russell's role is underway as production continues on the film in London. Russell was set to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in the reimagining of the classic Steve McQueen film. Alongside the pair, Lily Gladstone, Kenneth Branagh, and Danai Gurira are also set to appear in the movie in some capacity. Jordan's version of The Thomas Crown Affair is slated to arrive in theaters on March 5, 2027. The upcoming heist movie is written by Drew Pearce and Wes Tooke, based on a story by the original movie's writer Alan Trustman. It is produced by Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, along with Patrick McCormick and Marc Toberoff. Trustman has also signed on as an executive producer. Charles Roven has also joined the project as a producer. The original film came out in 1968, and starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the leading roles. A 1999 remake of the movie was also released, starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. 'An adventure of a millionaire playboy who steals a priceless work of art and then strikes up a fiery romance with the brilliant female insurance investigator who is on to his game,' a description of the 1999 movie reads. Taylor Russell exits Michael B Jordan's re-imagined 'The Thomas Crown Affair'

Actor Taylor Russell has exited The Thomas Crown Affair, the Michael B. Jordan-directed reimagining of the classic Steve McQueen film. Sources said the exit was due to creative differences. The studio is recasting the role as production continues in London, reported Deadline. Russell was cast opposite Jordan in the role of an insurance investigator who suspects that an adventurous banking executive is pulling off ambitious heists, and sparks develop between them. This role was played by Faye Dunaway opposite McQueen in the 1968 original, and by Rene Russo opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1999 version. Russell's also a director who made her debut co-directing The Heart Still Hums, which won Best Documentary Short at the Palm Springs ShortFest. Jordan stars in The Thomas Crown Affair alongside Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbaek and Aiysha Hart. Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo are producing for Outlier Society alongside Charles Roven at Atlas Entertainment. Drew Pearce wrote the script, with previous drafts by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson. Patrick McCormick and Toberoff Productions' Marc Toberoff are also producing, and Alan Trustman, who wrote the McQueen original, is an executive producer of the film. The film will have its theatrical release on March 5, 2027. As for Russell, the actress is best known for her standout turns in Trey Edward Shults' A24 feature Waves, for which she won the breakthrough actor award at the Gotham Awards, and Luca Guadagnino's Bones and All, which earned her the emerging actress prize at the Venice Film Festival and nominations from the Gothams and Independent Spirit Awards. Russell will be next seen in the Korean thriller Hope by Na Hong-jin, opposite Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Hoyeon; starring in Frank Ocean's upcoming film opposite David Jonnson; and in talks for a remake of Single White Female with Jenna Ortega for Sony, reported Variety. Russell recently made her stage debut in director Jamie Lloyd's critically acclaimed revival of Lucy Prebble's play, The Effect, which had a run in London and New York.

Why did Taylor Russell suddenly walk off Michael B. Jordan's ‘The Thomas Crown Affair'?

In a move that's already raising eyebrows in Hollywood, Taylor Russell has exited The Thomas Crown Affair remake just as filming ramps up in London. While official word pins the departure on 'creative differences,' insiders and fans alike are speculating there may be more to the story. Russell had been cast opposite Michael B. Jordan in the high-stakes thriller, playing an insurance investigator entangled with a suave executive suspected of masterminding elaborate heists. The role has legacy weight: it was first played by Faye Dunaway in the 1968 original and later by Rene Russo in the 1999 Pierce Brosnan version. Losing Russell mid-production leaves a gaping hole in one of the film's most iconic dynamics. While the studio scrambles to recast, the internet isn't waiting. Fans quickly lit up X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, with theories ranging from on-set clashes to dissatisfaction with the script. Some even pointed to rumoured tension between Russell and Jordan, though no direct confirmation has surfaced. Others speculated that Russell, who's rapidly building an arthouse résumé, may have felt misaligned with the commercial direction of the project. One Deadline commenter wrote, 'Creative differences lol. Sure. Would love the truth.' Another added, 'She shouldn't be casted again. Nor insurable,' fuelling speculation that the departure wasn't entirely amicable. Despite the setback, Russell's career shows no signs of slowing down. She's set to star in Korean thriller Hope, a Frank Ocean film, and is in talks for a remake of Single White Female opposite Jenna Ortega. Meanwhile, The Thomas Crown Affair remains on track for its March 2027 release, assuming its crown jewel can be quickly replaced.

Taylor Russell exits Thomas Crown Affair over 'creative differences'

Taylor Russell has exited the Thomas Crown Affair over 'creative differences'. The 31-year-old actress was previously cast as the female lead in Michael B. Jordan's upcoming reimagining of the 1968 film but she has now left the project and the role will be recast, according to Deadline. The film is currently in production in London. Michael is directing, starring in and producing the movie via his production banner Outlier Society, alongside Elizabeth Raposo. Russell's departure is surprising as she underwent a long casting process that included meetings, auditions and a screen test with Jordan in London at the beginning of the year, before landing the role. This will be the third Thomas Crown Affair movie, with the original 1968 movie pairing Faye Dunaway as Vicki Anderson, an investigator hired to discover the culprits of a multi-million dollar bank heist, and Steve McQueen as the orchestrator of the crime, Thomas Crown. The 1999 movie remake Pierce Brosnan as a rich playboy who enjoyed the thrill of stealing art, opposite insurance investigator Rene Russo. Lily Gladstone and Sir Kenneth Branagh are among the cast of the new film, although their roles are being kept under wraps. The upcoming movie takes place in Europe, and the art of thieving remains a central theme of the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Drew Pearce has written the script, while Patrick McCormick and Marc Toberoff will serve as producers. Alan Trustman, who wrote the original film, has been hired as an executive producer on the upcoming movie. The romantic thriller is scheduled for release in March 2027.
