Tennessee's SEC tournament run ends with run-rule loss to Vandy
HOOVER, AL. (WATE) – Tennessee's stay in Hoover ends in the SEC tournament semifinals with a 10-0 run-rule loss to Vanderbilt. The Commodores limited the Vols to just four hits, while the Dores recorded 13 hits off of five different Tennessee pitchers. Tegan Kuhns picked up the loss, after allowing four runs on five hits in just 1.1 innings of work. Tennessee was in business early as Vandy starting pitcher Cody Bowker walked Gavin Kilen and Andrew Fischer to start the game. However, Bowker struck out the next three batters to prevent the Vols from put anything on the scoreboard. Vanderbilt got to Tegan Kuhns early, as Rustan Rigdon sent a single up the middle and then stole second. Riley Nelson brought him home on another single to take a 1-0 lead. Lady Vols face elimination after Super Regional loss to Nebraska The Commodores exploded in the second to extend their lead to 5-0. Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with no outs. Jacob Humphrey sent one up the middle to score Braden Holcomb, and that ended Kuhns' day on the mound. Dylan Loy replaced the freshman after he allowed four runs on five hits. However, Vandy was able to get to Loy quickly as well. The Commodores plated two more runs on a pair of singles to make it a 5-0 advantage. After another Vandy single, a walk, and Tennessee's second error of the day, the Commodores quickly found themselves with the bases loaded. A wild pitch brought home Brodie Johnston. Tony Vitello decided to make a pitching change and bring in Tanner Franklin to replace Dylan Loy on the mound. Loy allowed three runs on just three hits in 1.1 innings. However, another wild pitch led to another Vandy run as the Dores extended their lead to 7-0 after three innings. Tennessee started off the fourth frame strong, with a single from Dean Curley and a double courtesy of Reese Chapman. However, Curley tried to score on the Chapman double and didn't make it in time. So, instead of having runners on the corners and no outs, Tennessee had just Chapman on second with one out. Liam Doyle named National Pitcher of the Year semifinalist A strikeout and fly-out led left Chapman stranded and Tennessee off the board. The Vols couldn't get anything going in the next two innings, as Vandy pitcher Connor Fennell pitched back-to-back 1-2-3 innings after replacing Bowker on the mound. Another pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth brought home another Vanderbilt run to make it an 8-0 lead. After a walk and wild pitch put two more Vandy runners on base, Tanner Franklin's day was done. Freshman Brayden Krenzel replaced him on the mound. Krenzel allowed back-to-back singles as Vanderbilt extended its lead to 10-0, enough for the run-rule win. UP NEXT: Tennessee now awaits its NCAA tournament fate.
