Telangana stops issuing station bail for drug users: Addicts now sent to court, rehab centres; move aims to curb relapse, aid recovery
HYDERABAD: The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) has stopped issuing station bail to people caught consuming drugs or possessing small quantities. Instead, they are now being produced before the court and sent to de-addiction centres for rehabilitation. The shift in policy came after police saw encouraging outcomes in six recent cases, including those involving students, where the individuals were booked under Section 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and denied station bail. Officials said the intervention helped prevent further substance abuse and put the individuals on a path to recovery. 'Earlier, we used to issue station bail to addicts. But in most cases, they immediately went back to consuming ganja or other drugs. Even their families were unable to stop them. Keeping this in mind, in recent cases, we have not issued station bail. Following due procedure, they are sent to de-addiction centres,' said TGANB director Sandeep Shandilya. CM Revanth Reddy launches EAGLE to keep hawk's eye on drugs
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday announced the formation of the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) to replace the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau, stating that the new entity will intensify surveillance and enforcement against drug-related activities. Speaking at a programme to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking held at Shilpakala Vedika, Revanth said, 'Telangana has begun efforts to curb drugs and ganja. Even if one ganja plant is grown or drugs are brought into the state, EAGLE will monitor it. Be cautious.' He reiterated his aim of making Telangana a drug-free state, asserting that no drugs would be allowed to enter its borders. 'From Komaram Bheem to Chakali Ilamma, Doddi Komuraiah and Sarvai Papanna, many have inspired the people through various movements. Universities and colleges once served as platforms for the statehood struggle. Now, the state is facing a different challenge. We must ask ourselves if Telangana becoming a hub of ganja is a matter of self-respect or shame,' Revanth said. CM: No progress as long as drugs rule the roost The chief minister disclosed that soon after assuming office, he instructed officials to take strict action against drugs. Referring to India's performance at the Olympics, he said: 'A country with a population of 140 crore not winning a single gold medal, is that not an embarrassment? Can a country where drug use is widespread progress?' Revanth pointed out that states such as Punjab and Haryana were already facing severe drug-related challenges. 'Youth in those states have become addicted and families are suffering. Punjabis once led from the front in wars and the Freedom Movement, but the situation has changed,' he said.

Hyderabad drug bust: Nigerian national, two locals caught with cocaine and ecstasy
The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB), in coordination with the Narsingi police, arrested a Nigerian national and two local drug peddlers from a luxury apartment in Manikonda. The police seized 107 grams of cocaine and 25 grams of ecstasy pills, with an estimated street value of ₹30 lakh. The operation was carried out at a flat in Anuhar Coral Bells in Alkapuri Township, following credible intelligence linking the network to drug supply chains between Goa and Hyderabad. The primary accused, identified as Chukwumeka Wisdom Onyeka, also known by several aliases including Victor Chukwu, Chukwu Emeka Divine, and Major Cartel, 22. Director of TGANB, Sandeep Shandilya said that Onyeka claims to be a student of (IT) at Gokul Global University, Gujarat, and resides in Parra, Mapusa Town, Bardez, Goa. 'He originally hails from Orlu city, Imo State, Nigeria. Onyeka was previously arrested in a 2023 case registered at the Raidurgam police station while attempting to sell cocaine. At the time, he was found in possession of a Sudanese passport,' said the officer. Investigations revealed that Onyeka entered India on December 26, 2022 on a student visa using a Sudanese passport under the name Victor Chukwu. This passport was seized in connection with the 2023 Raidurgam case. In mid-2023, he obtained a Nigerian passport under the alias Chukwu Emeka Divine, arranged by a handler named Max in Goa. He later returned to Nigeria on 5 September 2024, destroyed the previous passport, and re-entered India on 13 December 2024 using a new Nigerian passport issued in his real name. The two Indian nationals were identified as Gopishetty Rajesh, 40, and Bommadevara Veera Raju, 32. 'The drug racket was allegedly being run by a Nigerian kingpin identified as Max, also known as Princewel, Buchi or Gabriel. He is believed to operate supply chains from abroad using African nationals on student visas, who travel under fake identities. Onyeka acted as a key distributor, while Rajesh and Veera Raju, initially consumers, became suppliers after developing contacts with high-profile clients and realising the high profitability of drug peddling,' explained the officer. It has been established that Rajesh and Veera Raju made frequent visits to Goa to procure narcotics. They supplied cocaine and ecstasy to elite circles in Hyderabad. One of their regular customers, identified as Phani Raj from Mangalagiri, organised a rave party on May 29 at a farmhouse in Aziz Nagar, Moinabad. Rajesh delivered five grams of cocaine to him after meeting at Mokila. On May 31, Rajesh travelled to Mangalagiri again and handed over fifteen grams of cocaine. Another suppliers identified asHanumant Babuso Divkar alias Baba from Goa. Other customers named during the investigation include Pavithra Reddy, Satish, Sada Shiva, Sudhir and Bhanu. TGANB has appealed to the public, particularly the youth, not to fall prey to drugs or ganja. Authorities noted a worrying trend of students getting addicted and involving themselves in criminal and anti-social activities. Parents have been urged to monitor their children's behaviour and report any suspicious activity. Information can be shared confidentially via the toll-free number 1908 or WhatsApp at 87126671111. Credible informants will be rewarded accordingly.

HYDERABAD: Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Jitender on Saturday urged students to become anti-drug warriors and report any information about drugs to the police. 'Drugs ruin lives by damaging mental and physical health. Each of you should spread the message to at least 10 others — say no to drugs, yes to health and a good life,' he said. He was speaking at the launch of Drug Awareness Week at the Telangana State Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) in the presence of around 2,000 students from 15 schools. Aiming to sensitise schoolchildren to the dangers of drug abuse, Drug Awareness Week will be observed from June 21 to 26. Dr Jitender said the state government was committed to making Telangana a drug-free state with zero tolerance. 'We must all support the government and the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) in this mission,' he added. As part of the initiative, awareness rallies, seminars, public outreach programmes, and inter-departmental campaigns will be held across schools, colleges, and community spaces. A special message board allowed students to write pledges and share thoughts against drug use, encouraging a collective stand against substance abuse.
