Tennessee lands 2026 commit from same Georgia high school for second consecutive day

For the second time in as many days, Tennessee football landed a commitment from a player attending Kell High School in Marietta, Ga. On Wednesday afternoon, Kell three-star Class of 2026 defensive back Jowell Combay committed to the Volunteers during a ceremony at the school. Combay's announcement came on the heels of his teammate, incoming senior linebacker Brayden Rouse, deciding to commit to the Vols on Tuesday. Combay (6-foot-2, 190 pounds), who is projected to be a safety for the Vols, picked Tennessee over his final list of Missouri, Georgia, Wisconsin and South Carolina. Advertisement Last season, Combay was a first-team All-Region defensive back and was named the Region 6A-3 Athlete of the Year. He's also ranked as the No. 51 safety in the nation and the No. 65 player in Georgia by Combay was offered by Tennessee in February and made an official visit to the school last month. He becomes the 20th commit to the Vols' 2026 recruiting class, which is ranked 13th nationally and fifth in the SEC by On3. It's also not the first time this month Tennessee has received commitments from players attending the same high school. Earlier this month, the Vols got commits from four-star prospects TJ White and Dereon Albert, who attend Jackson Academy in Jackson, Miss. White plays linebacker and Albert is a defensive lineman. Jackson North Side cornerback Javonte Smith committed to Tennessee football in the 2026 class, choosing the in-state Vols over Arkansas, Missouri and West Virginia. On July 8, Smith made his announcement alongside coaches and teammates at North Side. Advertisement He also received scholarship offers from SEC schools Mississippi State, Kentucky and Vanderbilt. His last official visit was to UT on June 20. Smith is a 6-foot-1, 175-pounder rated a three-star prospect. He is ranked the No. 80 cornerback and No. 964 prospect overall, according to 247Sports Composite. Smith is a standout receiver, defensive back and kick returner for North Side. He was recruited by UT secondary coach Willie Martinez and projects as a cornerback for the Vols. 2025 Tennessee football season preview for defensive back Jermod McCoy

Junior Jermod McCoy enters his second season at Tennessee in 2025. The 6-foot, 193-pound cornerback appeared in 13 games for the Vols as a sophomore in 2024. He recorded 44 tackles, 0.5 tackles for a loss, four interceptions, 71 interception yards, 13 pass deflections, six punt returns and 59 punt return yards. Advertisement McCoy suffered a torn ACL during the offseason in January. He transferred to Tennessee from Oregon State ahead of the 2024 season. The former Beaver committed to the Vols over Texas A&M. McCoy appeared in 11 games for Oregon State during the 2023 regular-season. He recorded 31 tackles, two interceptions, seven pass deflections and one fumble recovery as a freshman for the Beavers. Tennessee will kick off its 2025 football season Aug. 30 versus Syracuse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Kickoff between the Vols and Orange is scheduled for noon EDT and will be televised by ABC. 2025 will mark the fifth season for Tennessee under head coach Josh Heupel.
