Royal News Roundup: Kate Middleton's New Hair, Meghan Markle's Striking Pic of Archie & More
The royal family marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and paid tribute to all those who served during the Second World War. The palace released a striking photo of King Charles saluting from behind during the military procession. The king was joined by Prince William and his family. The Prince of Wales's body language was in sync with his eldest son, Prince George, as they stood on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the flypast. Body language expert Darren Stanton observed Prince William and his wife, Princess Catherine, during the commemoration, noting that their marriage is "stronger than ever." The palace unveiled new, painted portraits of King Charles and Queen Camilla at the National Gallery's Central Hall, and they had a modern, abstract flair. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were noticeably absent from the Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, understandably due to school. Speaking of the Thanksgiving Service, Kate Middleton wore the iconic Collingwood pearl drop earrings—a family heirloom previously worn by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Middleton also debuted a stunning new hairstyle while attending a concert at Horse Guards Parade, striking the perfect balance between elegance and glamour. Meghan Markle paid tribute to Archie with a heartwarming birthday post on Instagram, featuring a striking image of the 6-year-old looking at the sun. After news got out about Prince Harry losing his appeal for publicly funded security, Markle responded with a tribute to her husband on Instagram, sharing a captionless black-and-white pic of the proud dad with Archie and Lilibet. The Duke of Sussex made his first public appearance since losing his appeal and giving his tell-all interview with BBC. He stepped out to support the Diana Award in memory of his late mother. Princess Anne delivered a message on behalf of King Charles while visiting Guernsey to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Bailiwick. For the occasion, she donned a beige coat dress and a meaningful brooch. Prince Edward hosted a special event at Buckingham Palace for winners of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Several highlights were shared on the royal family's social media. Duchess Sarah Ferguson launched the official website of the Youth Impact Council as their co-founder and global ambassador. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie did a candid podcast interview with Lessons from Our Mothers, opening up about their childhoods and the positive influence of their mother, Fergie. Princess Eugenie marked her husband Jack Brooksbank's birthday with a heartwarming tribute on Instagram, referring to him as "my hero." Want all the latest royal family news sent right to your inbox? Kate Middleton channels Princess Diana in recycled ‘My Fair Lady' polka dot look
Kate Middleton opted for a re-wear of her polka dot Alessandra Rich dress for this year's VE Day Service, and her My Fair Lady look gave a subtle sweet nod to the late Princess Diana After stepping back from public events last year, Kate Middleton has been steadily returning to her public duties since the start of the year. Although her recent looks have been more understated and outdoorsy – such as her Claudia Winkleman -inspired countryside outfits during a visit to Scotland in April – Princess Kate has demonstrated she still knows how to put together a classic, elegant outfit for formal occasions with her most recent look. The Princess of Wales opted for a re-wear of one of her favourite Alessandra Rich dresses as she attended the Thanksgiving Service to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day at Westminster Abbey. The white midi dress with polka dot print is a classic example of Kate's ability to nail a current trend (in this case polka dot prints) whilst still re-wearing her wardrobe and looking timeless and elegant. Princess Kate most recently wore the Alessandra Rich dress during The Order of The Garter service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on June 19 2023, with fans pointing out the similarity between her outfit and Audrey Hepburn's look in My Fair Lady. The midi dress features long sleeves and a high neckline, with subtle pleating details around the waist and neck for a flattering and modest look. The Princess of Wales' look is also very reminiscent of one of Princess Diana 's best-loved looks, which was her polka dot white midi dress that she wore to Royal Ascot in 1988. Just like Kate's Alessandra Rich dress, Diana's had subtle pleating across the waist for a form fitting silhouette, with long sleeves and a midi hemline. This isn't the first time Princess Kate has made a subtle gesture of remembrance to Princess Diana's outfits, with Kate also opting for a white and brown polka dot dress during the 2022 Royal Ascot, which was a clear nod to her late mother-in-law's iconic look. Whilst we're coveting Kate's exact dress, the hefty price tag is well beyond most of our budgets, not to mention unavailable to buy anywhere. Whilst you can pick up a similar sleeveless Alessandra Rich midi dress on FarFetch for £1070, we managed to find some more affordable options that let you copy Princess Kate's look for less.
