Gov. Green seeking more money, amenities for New Aloha Stadium
HONOLULU (KHON2) — The ideas of what the New Aloha Stadium could feature might be evolving. Governor Josh Green wants to add to the $400 million in stadium funds through donations.'We have $400 million. Honestly, we'd do better to have somewhere between $600 and $800 million at least to build a beautiful stadium that has a roof that can bring extra concerts,' Gov. Green said. 'They can bring extra Olympic Trials and so on.'
Many believed that the project would not be able to feature such amenities with the taxpayer-funded budget of $350 million in general obligation funds for the new Aloha Stadium & associated costs and $50 million in general funds to be expended on stadium costs for operations, maintenance, and contract costs to developer Aloha Halawa District Partners. Governor Green says he's working on getting that done through the private sector.

'I'm meeting privately with some benefactors to see if they would help us fund additional resources,' Gov. Green said. 'I've had some very good conversations. And hopefully, in the next couple of months, I can announce that.'
The current Aloha Stadium has been condemned since December of 2020, with an anticipated completion date of the stadium in 2028 for the year's University of Hawaii football season. The project was originally scheduled for an opening in the fall of 2023, but it encountered numerous delays.
Governor Green says he's met with groups that have done entertainment districts with stadiums across the country and thinks that in partnership with The Aloha Halawa District Partners, they can bring a great facility.
