Delhi hounded by strays, kids pay price: Girl (6) dies of rabies after dog attack, family alleges official apathy

NEW DELHI: Amidst the rising threat of stray dog attacks in the national capital, the death of a six-year-old girl has reignited the debate on civic apathy and public health failures in Delhi's Pooth Kalan area, near Rohini. Chavi Sharma, the girl who was attacked, was a Class 1 student who had recently started school. On June 30, she was attacked by a rabid stray while on her way to visit her aunt. The dog bit her multiple times, leaving deep wounds on her left leg, arm and palm. We had complained to the councillor, to no avail," said Shakuntala, 64, a previous victim of the same dog's attack who rushed to the spot upon hearing the child's screams. Chavi was taken to Ambedkar Hospital, where her anti-rabies treatment began. She received two injections and was scheduled for her third dose on July 28. But on July 24, she developed fever. Doctors at Ambedkar Hospital allegedly dismissed her fever as seasonal flu. As her condition worsened and she had difficulty swallowing water, she was referred from one hospital to another, first to Kalawati Hospital, then Lady Hardinge — which cited the lack of an isolation ward — and from there to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and later to Safdarjung Hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paras Sector 59 Gurgaon | Luxury Awaits at Paras Floret Paras The Florett Book Now Undo Finally, the family admitted the child to a private hospital at Pitampura on July 25, where Chavi passed away the next day. "It had only been two days since she started attending," said her elder brother Vishal Sharma, 27, staring at her teddy bear on the bed. "Had the dog been removed, my sister wouldn't have lost her life." Chavi was the daughter of Santosh Sharma, and was adopted by Manju and Satish Sharma when she was 3-4 months old, after her mother passed away in 2019. The family has been living in a rented home in Pooth Kalan for the past 25 years. Manju, a homemaker, and Satish, a carpenter, have three other children — Vishal, Akansha and Manish. Chavi's biological father, Santosh, is yet to arrive to bid her farewell. The family has submitted a complaint at Sultanpuri police station, demanding legal action against MCD officials, who they believe failed to act despite repeated complaints about the dog menace.

'Walking corpses': Photos of malnourished Gaza toddler go viral as humanitarian situation worsens; see pics inside

Representative- AI generated image A Gaza-based photographer has revealed the heartbreaking reality behind a viral image taken by him of a severely underweight child, captured amid the worsening humanitarian crisis in the territory. Speaking to BBC Newshour, Ahmed al-Arini said he took the photograph to "show the rest of the world extreme hunger" affecting babies and children in the Gaza Strip. While global food security experts have not formally declared a famine, United Nations agencies have warned that Gaza is in the grip of mass, man-made starvation. They cite Israel's control over the flow of supplies into the Palestinian enclave as the primary cause- a claim Israel strongly denies. The Israeli government instead blames Hamas for malnutrition cases. According to the UN's Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), around 20 per cent of children in Gaza City suffer from malnutrition, with the numbers growing daily. On Thursday, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini relayed a stark observation from a colleague, similar to the photographer's portrayal, - "People in Gaza are neither dead nor alive, they are walking corpses." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paras Sector 59 Gurgaon | Luxury Awaits at Paras Floret Paras The Florett Book Now Undo Over 100 international humanitarian and human rights organisations have sounded the alarm on widespread hunger and urged immediate global intervention. Israel, which oversees all crossings into Gaza, maintains it is not imposing a blockade and continues to hold Hamas accountable for food shortages. The UN, however, says the level of aid entering the strip is critically low and the hunger crisis is without precedent. In a statement, Lazzarini said "more than 100 people, the vast majority of them children, have reportedly died of hunger." He added: "Most children our teams are seeing are emaciated, weak and at high risk of dying if they don't get the treatment they urgently need." He urged Israel to "allow humanitarian partners to bring unrestricted and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance to Gaza." UNRWA staff themselves are increasingly struggling. "When caretakers cannot find enough to eat, the entire humanitarian system is collapsing," Lazzarini said, adding that staff are "increasingly fainting from hunger while at work." The World Health Organisation (WHO) echoed the warnings. On Wednesday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "I don't know what you would call it other than mass starvation — and it's man-made." People of Gaza describe their living conditions In northern Gaza, 40-year-old Hanaa Almadhoun described worsening conditions. She told the BBC via WhatsApp, "If [food and supplies] do exist then they come at exorbitant prices that no ordinary person can afford." She explained that people had sold "gold and personal belongings" just to buy flour. "Every new day brings a new challenge" as families scavenge for "something edible," she added. "With my own eyes, I've seen children rummaging through the garbage in search of food scraps." During a visit to Israeli forces in Gaza on Wednesday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog insisted that his country was providing humanitarian aid "according to international law." But aid worker Tahani Shehada, based in Gaza, described a different reality saying, "People are just trying to survive hour-by-hour. Even simple things like cooking [and] taking a shower have become luxuries." She added: "I have a baby. He's eight months old. He doesn't know what fresh fruit tastes like." In early March, Israel suspended aid deliveries to Gaza following a temporary ceasefire. Though some restrictions were later eased, shortages of food, fuel, and medicine have only deepened. To streamline relief efforts, Israel and the United States established the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), but deadly incidents have continued. The UN human rights office reports that over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces while attempting to collect food aid in the last two months, according to BBC. At least 766 of those deaths occurred near one of GHF's four distribution centres, operated by US private contractors inside Israeli military zones. Another 288 were killed near UN and other aid convoys. Israel maintains that Hamas incites disorder near aid convoys and insists that its troops fire only warning shots, avoiding civilian harm. The GHF has accused the UN of relying on "false" data from Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry. Najah, a 19-year-old widow sheltering at a Gaza hospital, said she fears for her life every time she attempts to reach an aid site. She told the BBC: "I hope they bring us something to eat and drink. We die of hunger with nothing to eat or drink. We live in tents. We are finished off." Dr Aseel, a physician working with a UK-based medical charity in Gaza, disputed the suggestion that famine is looming — saying it's already here. "My husband went once [to an aid distribution point] and twice and then got shot and that was it," she said. "If we are to die from hunger, let it be. The path to aid is the path to death." Gaza market seller Abu Alaa described his family's daily struggle: "We go to bed hungry every night. We are not alive. We are dead. We are pleading with the whole world to intervene and save us." Meanwhile, Eight months pregnant with her third child, Walaa Fathi said Gaza is experiencing a level of deprivation few imagined possible. From Deir al-Balah, she told the BBC: "We are experiencing a catastrophe and a famine that no one could have imagined. I hope that my baby stays in my womb and I don't have to give birth in these difficult circumstances."

Gurgaon now pollution blind as sole reading station goes offline

Gurgaon: The city, one of India's most-polluted urban areas, has been without real-time air quality monitoring for the past 10 days. The lone functional Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station(CAQMS) in the city, located at Gwalpahari and operated by IMD, last recorded readings on July 13. Since then, even this station went offline. What this means is that for over a week now, no government-run air quality monitor in Gurgaon is providing AQI data to the public, state pollution control board and national dashboards like CPCB. This didn't happen overnight. The Sector 51's station stopped working in April, while Teri's monitor went quiet in March and Vikas Sadan's in Jan. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon What happens when data disappears? First, regulatory agencies lose visibility. Without live PM2.5 and PM10 data, there's no way to evaluate day-to-day pollution readings or activate emergency measures like GRAP. Public health advisories can't be issued, and residents with respiratory or cardiac conditions have no information to base their day's planning on. This isn't a minor glitch. It's a complete data blackout in a city where the air is often dangerously dirty. "Monitoring and availability of air quality data is the first step to improve air, and it is even more critical for a city like Gurgaon, which sits in one of the most polluted airsheds globally," said Sunil Dahiya, founder and lead analyst at Envirocatalysts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Paras Sector 59 Gurgaon | Luxury Awaits at Paras Floret Paras The Florett Book Now Undo "HSPCB, CPCB and IITM must urgently coordinate to resolve tendering delays and restore the system. Pollution control efforts need to be data-driven," he added. Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) analyst Manoj Kumar said the situation needed urgent attention. "With the peak pollution season just a few months away, transparency and timely warnings for the public are non-negotiable." IMD's VK Soni, responding to the shutdown of Gwalpahari, said, "Some parameters at the station started showing abnormal values, likely due to the sensor malfunction. As a precaution, CPCB had asked us to stop data transmission until the issue is completely resolved. We have identified the problem and are working to fix it. The station should be back online shortly." A study of air quality data by CREA ranked Gurgaon as the fifth most-polluted Indian city in the first half of 2025, with an average concentration of PM2.5 at 75 µg/m³, 15 times higher than WHO's maximum permissible limit (5 µg/m³). It further identified January 19, 2025, as Gurgaon's 'overshoot day'. By then, particulate matter 2.5 concentration was already so high that, even if levels were to drastically reduce to zero for the rest of the year, the city would still fail to meet WHO's annual limit.

Rain on KP mind as cops ready 9-11 plans after HC order

Kolkata: With rain on mind, which can slow down traffic on July 21, Kolkata Police will deploy 5,500 cops at the city centre, and thousands more will be posted from the city's fringes to the Maidan for smooth commuting, officers said. On Saturday, Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Varma toured Kolkata with stopovers at traffic guards on fringes like Thakurpukur and Garia Dhalai Bridge before coming back to the city centre to review traffic preparations. This was in tune with the Calcutta High Court order on Friday that directed Kolkata Police to ensure that no procession for the July 21 rally takes place between 9 am and 11 am. The order further asked cops to ensure there is no traffic congestion on routes leading to the high court and other offices within a five-kilometre radius in central Kolkata. "We have had specific discussions and have passed instructions to my teams. We are taking all adequate measures to ensure the stipulations mentioned by the Honourable HC are maintained. We will ensure that the rally is conducted smoothly without hampering traffic movement and complying with the court order," said Varma. "We also urge commuters to call us on our helplines in case of any trouble." Incidentally, these are the two points from where majority of vehicles carrying supporters from South 24 Parganas arrive. Varma then visited the Hastings area before visiting the Esplanade rally venue. He then headed towards Bhabani Bhawan. Varma added he also had discussions with his counterparts in Baruipur, Diamond Harbour, Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, and Howrah about traffic management from the bordering areas. Sources said the cops plan to halt traffic coming from the city fringes at these bordering areas and wouldn't allow large vehicles carrying supporters to enter the city before 11 am to mitigate the traffic chaos. According to an estimate, several lakhs of people are likely to arrive in Kolkata on Monday in buses and trains from every subdivision block and panchayat area. While the party arranged for accommodation and meals for workers at four different places since Friday, a large chunk of party supporters arrive from the city and its neighbouring districts on the day of the rally, choking city traffic. At Esplanade, final preparations were on, with senior KP officers, including Varma, inspecting the venue. Sniffer dogs and cops from the bomb squad also inspected the stage and the surroundings every few hours. "Rain is our biggest challenge. We are equipped to manage traffic congestion due to the rallyists, but if it rains heavily, our plans will take a hit," said a senior officer.
