Emmys shake-up: ‘The Gorge' jumps into top 5 for Best TV Movie
Are Emmy voters about to gorge themselves on The Gorge? This week, the Apple TV+ project jumped past Netflix's Nonnas in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions to climb into the fifth spot for Best TV Movie. That's significant because the category will just have five nominees due to there only being 39 total submissions. The other four predicted nominees: Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Disney +'s Out of My Mind, Peacock's Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, and HBO's Mountainhead. More from Gold Derby 'Squid Game 3' - instant Emmy predictions for the bloody final season Blessed be the comeback? 'The Handmaid's Tale' is on track to return to this major Emmy category for final season For those unfamiliar with The Gorge, Scott Derrickson's original sci-fi film stars Miles Teller as Levi Kane and Anya Taylor-Joy as Drasa, two elite snipers tasked with guarding opposite sides of a deep gorge, unaware of what mysteries lie below. Sigourney Weaver also stars as Bartholomew. Despite its middling 63 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, TV critics hailed The Gorge for its successful mixing of genres, switching effortlessly between being an endearing romance and a high-octane thriller. Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) wrote, "This is a great-looking movie with star-power leads, and not for a second is any of it even close to being plausible, and we're just fine with that." Brian Truitt (USA Today) called it a "Whitman's Sampler of film genres with a delightfully sweet center that belies its freaky packaging." And Jake Coyle (Associated Press) noted, "There is good preposterous and bad preposterous. The Gorge may find some believers on both sides of that gulf." Despite the film's improved fifth-place position in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions, its stars remain out of the money. Taylor-Joy is down in 16th place for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress, while Teller ranks 24th for Best Movie/Limited Actor. So, why the disconnect? Recent Emmy history has been a wipeout for original telefilms, particularly in the acting categories, as the format has mostly been abandoned in favor of limited series. Over the past five years, only two performers have received Emmy nominations for appearing in traditional TV movies: Daniel Radcliffe for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2023) and Hugh Jackman for Bad Education (2020). Then there's Tituss Burgess, who nabbed a supporting bid for his canceled show's interactive follow-up film, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend (2020). Gold Derby's Emmy predictions are based on the combined forecasts of more than 4,600 people (and counting), including experts we've polled from major media outlets, editors who cover awards year-round for this website, and the mass of users who make up our biggest predictions bloc. "The Black Phone 2" Is More Violent, Scarier, More Graphic, Says Director Scott Derrickson
Yara Sameh "Dead is just a word," that's the message behind Universal and Blumhouse's "The Black Phone 2". The official trailer unveiled Sunday at CCXP Mexico, a pop culture convention being held in Mexico City over the weekend. The movie is the sequel to the surprise 2022 hit that grossed $161 million against an $18 million budget. Based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King, the movie introduced audiences to the Grabber, a masked serial killer who abducts children, locking them up in his basement. One such kid, however, finds an unplugged but haunted rotary phone that connects him to the ghosts of the previous snatched boys, and in that a possible way out. The movie ends with the Grabber dead, so how is he back? The trailer shows builds to a chilling phone conversation between our hero, played by a returning Mason Thames, and the Grabber, once again played by Ethan Hawke, with the latter telling the teen, 'You of all people should know that dead is just a word.' Then the trailer unleashes a barrage of horror images. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson elaboratedthe nature of ghost stories. 'The first movie was a ghost movie but all the ghosts were victims, which is typical, a ghost story,' he said prior to the trailer 's reveal. 'But in this one, you've got a ghost that is a villain.' With the first movie, Derrickson tapped into his Denver childhood, where bullies and violence were common. For the new movie, he drew on his high school experience of going to winter camps in the Rocky Mountains. The severity of the weather, the environment and the surrounding Rockies contributed to the tone of the sequel. The difference between middle school and high school ages of the characters is the big change in tone. 'A middle school coming-of-age horror movie is a different animal than a high school coming-of-age horror film,' Derrickson added. 'A there's a ratcheting up of intensity because of that.' Derrickson wasn't necessarily planning on a sequel to "Black Phone" but said Hill wrote to him a month or two after the movie came out with some ideas. And having it set in the high school years proved appealing, especially when he worked out the timing in his head. 'I thought if I go make another movie first and don't make a sequel now like you're supposed to, then by the time I finish, these kids are all going to be in high school,' he explained. The movie he did was the large-budgeted monster Apple TV+ movie titled "The Gorge" with Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller. 'And I can return to these characters in this different stage of their lives.' And because of that, "Black Phone 2" is more of a horror film than the first movie, which he considers to be a supernatural thriller. 'It is certainly more violent, scarier, more graphic,' he said. 'And part of that is because of the age of the kids.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Miles Teller signs on to comedy movie Possum Song
Miles Teller is to star in the comedy film 'Possum Song'. The 38-year-old actor is to lead 'Sing Sing' director Greg Kwedar's upcoming flick as a Nashville star who had secretly stolen the songs for his hit debut album. 'Possum Song' will follow singer Eddie (Teller) as he faces mounting pressure to finish his follow-up solo album - or risk losing everything. With a new wife and a baby on the way and just as hope begins to fade, he encounters an unlikely source of inspiration: a magical possum with extraordinary musical talent. But their collaboration comes at a steep and potentially perilous price. As well as starring in the movie, Teller is to produce 'Possum Song' with Lee Stobby, while Kwedar and Clint Bentley also produce under their Ethos banner. Kwedar will be working from a script written by Isaac Adamson, while FilmNation Entertainment is to produce and fully finance the movie. FilmNation Entertainment's President of Motion Pictures Ben Browning told Deadline: "This is a one-of-a-kind film. "Greg's vision, Isaac's hilarious script and the magnetic performance of Miles Teller will create the kind of cinematic ride that audiences are craving - with showstopping music, visceral shocks, possums, humor and emotion." This comes just after it was reported Teller would star in director Paul Downs Colaizzo's 'Winter Games' for Paramount Pictures. Sources told Deadline that 'The Gorge' star is attached to the project and will also serve as a producer alongside Tim and Trevor White. The film – which was written by Colaizzo and Pat Cunnane - explores the intense pressure faced by athletes at the Winter Olympics, centring on two main characters: a self-destructive hockey legend and an overlooked skier. Set in the Olympic Village, the story follows their intertwined journeys of romance, redemption, and the pursuit of gold. Teller is no stranger to collaborating with Paramount Pictures, having starred in the 2022 blockbuster 'Top Gun: Maverick' alongside Tom Cruise, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, and the late Val Kilmer, who passed away last month at the age of 65. 'Winter Games' also marks a reunion for Teller with producers Tim and Trevor White and writer Cunnane - the team behind the upcoming romantic comedy 'Eternity', which co-stars Elizabeth Olsen and Callum Turner. Teller is gearing up for a busy end to 2025, following news that he and Casey Affleck will star in the upcoming manhunt thriller 'Wild Game', written and directed by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Jason Hall. The 'Whiplash' actor previously collaborated with Hall on the 2017 drama 'Thank You for Your Service', and expressed his excitement about reuniting for this new project. He said: "I'm really looking forward to reuniting with Jason Hall on 'Wild Game'. "We've had a great collaboration in the past, and I know he's going to bring incredible depth to this story. Claude Dallas is such a complex and layered character—tough, relentless, and living by his own code. I can't wait to get started with this team."

Vandal-hit rowing club names new boats after donors
A historic rowing club which last year suffered an act of vandalism, causing thousands of pounds' worth of damage, is celebrating a change in fortunes by officially naming its new boats. In February 2024, a boat at Ironbridge Rowing Club, based in Shropshire's Ironbridge Gorge, was torn from its racking and smashed on the floor. A fundraiser collected £5,000, with further donations and funding allowing the club to purchase three new vessels - which were christened on Sunday. "We had just a small amount of fizz poured over the bows - you definitely don't smash the bottle over them," said club chair Gail Thomas. "It was a fantastic day." The club used the money raised to buy a new lightweight double scull but also secured matched funding from the Rowing Foundation to buy two single sculls for use by lightweight junior members. Much of the money was raised by local residents and businesses, including Dale End Cafe, The Toy Box, The Butchers Bar and Merrythought Bears, which was reflected in the club's choice of names for the new boats. "The new double scull will be called The Gorge in recognition of all the people and businesses who donated to making the purchase happen," said Stewart Plant, the club captain. "At the same time, it is wonderful to recognise the support that Merrythought has given the club over the years by naming the first of our new cadet sculls Merrythought. The other single scull was named Sunnyside by the junior squad. "The yellow canvas not only makes the boat look like a sunny side up egg," explained Mr Plant, "but also after the area of Coalbrookdale known as Sunniside Avenue that used to look down on our former majestic neighbours, the Ironbridge power station." Founded in 1870, the club is known for running one of the oldest rowing races in the West Midlands, the Ironbridge Weekend Regatta, which this year will be held on the weekend of 28 and 29 June.
