Stephon Gilmore names five players to create dream all-time secondary
Former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore revealed his dream secondary during a recent appearance on The Money Down Podcast. The unit would include himself, two safeties and two other cornerbacks from any generation. Gilmore chose Deion Sanders and Ronde Barber as the other two corners on the roster. At safety, he went with Ed Reed and Rod Woodson to complete the Hall of Fame secondary. "I got to go with Deion on the other side, Primetime. I gotta go with Ed Reed at free. Let me see, strong safety—I could go Rod Woodson," said Gilmore. "Nickel, who was a nice nickel? I need somebody that's smart in there, that's physical. It's only one nickel that's in the Hall of Fame—from Tampa, Ronde Barber." That secondary would have 39 Pro Bowl nominations between them all. It would be any quarterback's worst nightmare to throw against. Imagine that group going against Tom Brady and the greatest collection of receiving talent throughout NFL history. Gilmore recently named the toughest receivers he's faced in his NFL career. It would be a dream matchup for the ages. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Stephon Gilmore makes admission on first meeting with Tom Brady
Former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore admitted Tom Brady was the player he was most impressed by when he first got into the NFL. Gilmore had an opportunity to face Brady plenty of times after being drafted by the Buffalo Bills, but he also had a chance to play alongside the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback as a teammate, after signing with the Patriots in 2017. When appearing on The Money Down Podcast, Gilmore revealed his first interaction with Brady and how that relationship helped him grow as a player. 'It was Tom. Just because I played against Tom obviously in the division, and then when I got on the team, he came up to me and was like, 'Happy to have you,'" said Gilmore. "I'm like, 'This crazy.' You know what I'm saying? I seen like how he worked, man. Like how he worked every day, how he ran drills, how he stay after practice every day. I'm like, he's doing this, I gotta do even more because like, man, he's the best ever, bro. And he is working like he's an undrafted free agent. He had that work ethic, and I think that rubbed off on everybody." Gilmore was already a great player when he arrived in New England, but he took things to another level by winning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a Super Bowl. If anything, stories like this further solidify Brady's legacy to fans. He was one of a kind in his work ethic and dedication to the game of football. It's the reason why he's a seven-time Super Bowl champion. That kind of work ethic made him the best at his craft, but more importantly, it made everyone around him better. Stephon Gilmore namedrops toughest wide receivers he's faced
Former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore has gone head-to-head with a who's who list of top-tier NFL receivers. That level of competition has ranged from Pro Football Hall of Famers to multiple-time First-Team All-Pros and perennial Pro Bowlers. When appearing on The Money Down Podcast, the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year named the best receivers he's faced in his career. "I did mostly good against bigger receivers because I'm a bigger corner, so I can kind of match up with them well. It's just sometimes, like the more shiftier [receivers], like Tyreek Hill, obviously a different speed, he's hard to go against," Gilmore admitted. "I played against Calvin [Johnson] early in my career. I wish I could have played him at like Year 5. I was a rookie out there on him. [Antonio Brown] was good. Julio [Jones] was good. Davante Adams was pretty good. ...Davante Adams didn't really do nothing on me that game, but I could just tell by his route-running that he's different." Gilmore stepped up to the challenge right out of the gate and proved himself as one of the best cornerbacks of his generation. He is the only player in the Patriots' franchise history to ever win the defensive MVP. The Patriots utilized him as a shutdown cornerback for multiple years. He was the team's eraser, consistently matching up against the best receiving talent on the field. By the end of his run in New England, Gilmore had 11 interceptions, 52 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, one sack and 185 tackles. Even at 34 years old as a free agent, Gilmore is still looking to challenge himself by signing to another NFL team and adding to what some already view as a Hall of Fame-worthy career. So there's the potential for more names to get added to his top list of receivers. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

5-time Pro Bowl free agent CB urged to join Rams
The Los Angeles Rams still need some cornerback help after an offseason where they returned their entire 2024 lineup. L.A. also didn't draft any new cornerbacks or trade for any veterans despite interest in Jalen Ramsey, who ended up being sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers. There are a few other options out there for the Rams if they want another veteran, including five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro Stephon Gilmore. While it's unclear if Gilmore or the Rams are interested in each other, former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Warren Herring urged Gilmore to come to L.A. on a recent episode of "The Money Down Podcast." 'Come over to LA. We like you in the blue and gold," Herring said. "You did it to us once. Now, get us one. You owe us one. We need some veteran presence in the room. We'd love to have you.' Herring is referencing the 2018 Super Bowl, when Gilmore and the New England Patriots beat the Rams, 13-3. Gilmore had an interception and five tackles in that game. While Gilmore, who'll be 35 in September, didn't say which teams he's interested in signing with, the veteran noted that "it's got to be the right situation for me. So, I'm not just going to sign anywhere." Gilmore, who's played for the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers over the past four years, has 32 career interceptions, 149 defended passes and 617 combined tackles in 180 games over 13 NFL seasons.

Patriots legend putting off retirement for another playing opportunity
Former New England Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore still has the urge to play football, despite remaining unsigned after his one-and-done run with the Minnesota Vikings last season. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year turns 35 years old in September, and he is currently looking for the right opportunity to step back on the field. Perhaps something will emerge during training camp for a team in need of a reliable veteran player with a Super Bowl title, five Pro Bowls and two First-Team All-Pro nods on his resume. "I want to play this year, it's just got to be the right situation," Gilmore said, when appearing on The Money Down Podcast, via Bobby Kownack. "It's got to be the right situation for me. I'm not just gonna sign anywhere. … I still love the game. I still can contribute. It's just got to be the right place." Gilmore was one of the most prolific defensive players in Patriots history. He is the only player in franchise history to win the NFL Defensive MVP award. Since leaving New England in 2021, he has played for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys and Vikings. Perhaps another cornerback-needy team will come calling at some point. Gilmore would be a good depth addition and solid veteran presence in an NFL locker room. And who knows? Maybe he still has a big play or two left in the tank to make a difference.
