Kitchen fire reported at Valley Mission in Staunton

STAUNTON – A grease fire interrupted operations at the Valley Mission in Staunton on July 15. Staunton fire and police personnel responded to the shelter, located at 1513 W. Beverley St., at about 9 a.m. Susan Richardson, executive director at the Mission, said she was "very grateful" the small kitchen fire didn't spread. Richardson said the fire was caused by overflow grease. The kitchen will remain operational, but Richardson said because they will have to clean up residue from fire extinguishers that were used to snuff the fire, lunch was being delivered. "We are ordering subs for lunch to address the lunch prep that was affected by the chemicals," Richardson said in an email the The News Leader. Normal operations were expected to resume following lunch, she said. Augusta County pursuit ends on I-81, Harrisonburg man facing several charges

A Harrisonburg man who was reportedly in a pursuit that involved the Augusta County Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police, resulting in a crash on Interstate 81, is in custody and facing several charges. Jamie C. Whitesel, 37, is charged with felony eluding, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving while suspended, driving while revoked, illegal use of a crossover, and an unsafe lane change. Whitesel is being held at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona. The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. on June 15. According to Virginia State Police, a state trooper was alerted to a van, possibly stolen, that was headed north on U.S. 11 in Verona. The driver reportedly refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated near the intersection of Va. 612 and U.S. 11, a press release said. The van entered I-81 southbound, where Augusta County deputies deployed spike strips, deflating the van's driver's side rear tire at the 225 mile-marker. The suspect continued to drive and reportedly used the crossover at the 223 mile marker, nearly striking a northbound tractor-trailer before being involved in a collision with a second tractor-trailer, the release said. The collision deflated a front tire, bringing the van to a halt. Whitesel reportedly attempted to flee on foot before he was taken into custody, police said. The incident remains under investigation. Sweet Addie's asking for community input as it chooses new logo for Staunton waffle shop

Bessy Peralta and Jeff Coffey have owned Sweet Addie's in downtown Staunton for a year now, purchasing the business from its previous owner. The couple said there have been a few rough patches in that year, including a slow winter season, but now that summer is almost here and business has picked up, Peralta and Coffey want to do something fun for the community. The idea is to create a new logo and they're involving their customers in the process. "Sweet Addie's is part of the community," Peralta said of the gourmet waffle eatery. "It's like everybody knows Sweet Addie's. So we want the people to give their opinions. They can show their imagination." The couple will be holding a logo contest, asking people to submit their designs. The logo design can be drawn on paper or sent as a digital file. Include your name, phone number and email address. Digital files can be sent to sweetaddiesstaunton@ Entries can also be dropped off at Sweet Addie's at 132 W. Beverley St., Staunton. The contest runs through June 30. Entries will be posted on the restaurant's Facebook page and visitors to the page can vote on their favorite. Sweet Addie's will be open on July 4, when the winner will be announced. First place will win a $100 gift card and a waffle lovers gift basket, along with a T-shirt with their logo. Second place will win a T-shirt with the new logo and $50 gift card, while third place will win a T-shirt with the new logo and a $25 gift card. Some of the most popular waffle menu items include Easy Like Sunday Morning (fried chicken, chopped bacon, blueberries, strawberries, powered sugar and syrup), Mac Daddy (fried chicken, bacon, white cheddar mac & cheese and maple syrup) and Too Hot Ta Trot (fried chicken tossed in red hot sauce, white cheddar mac & cheese, fresh jalapeños and spicy syrup).
