Halton police dog shoots itself in the paw, expected to make full recovery
A Halton police dog is expected to make a full recovery after being shot in the leg by a gun he accidentally triggered while helping search for evidence tied to a violent Burlington carjacking. Halton police say the injury to Freddy came in the wake of a fast-moving armed robbery investigation that ended Thursday afternoon with the arrest of two men who now face a combined 20 charges. A day earlier, around 5:30 p.m. June 25, police said a woman was driving a Porsche Macan near Guelph Line and Derry Road when she noticed a grey Chevrolet pickup truck following her. The woman pulled into the parking lot of Kilbride Public School before two masked men hopped out of the truck and pointed handguns at her, police said. She 'immediately' got out and surrendered her car. 'Thankfully the victim did not sustain any physical injuries,' police said in a release. The suspects, meanwhile, stole the luxury car and fled east in tandem with the pickup truck. Police said both vehicles were found abandoned in the area of Tobyn and Kilmer drives shortly after the robbery. Later investigation revealed the pickup truck had been reported stolen in Niagara region. By around 1:10 p.m. June 26, police spotted both suspects in the area of Walkers Line and Kilmer Drive. Police said one suspect — allegedly carrying two loaded firearms and an unspecified quantity of drugs — was immediately arrested. The other took off in a Volkswagen SUV, driving some five kilometres south to Sherwood Forest Park, where officers eventually arrested him, police said. It was there in the park, as Freddy and his handler scoured thick brush for evidence post-arrest, that the canine's paw came down on a loaded handgun that discharged. Police allege the gun was discarded by the suspect. 'We are grateful for our tenacious PSD Freddy and look forward to his full recovery,' Supt. Dave Costantini said in Friday's release. Police said a raid of a Burlington residence tied to the suspects later yielded a 3D printer, 3D-printed guns and a device used to reprogram stolen vehicles. A 33-year-old from Burlington and a 32-year-old from Oakville face 10 charges each, including robbery with a firearm, possession for the purpose of trafficking, disguise with intent and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Police said more charges could be laid as a probe into the 3D printed guns continues. According to police, the 33-year-old Burlington man was out on federal statutory release for a violent firearms offence at the time of the carjacking. Police said the accused was convicted of manslaughter in 2018 for an armed home invasion that saw a woman shot and killed. He was sentenced to 10 years but was released early after 16 months of credit for pre-sentence custody. Police noted the 32-year-old from Oakville was also bound by multiple probation orders and a release order for prior firearms offences. 'I cannot imagine the fear experienced by the victim during this violent and terrifying armed carjacking. On behalf of the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS), I extend my thoughts to her and her family during this incredibly traumatic time,' Halton Chief Stephen Tanner said in the release. 'I am deeply concerned by the escalating level of violence and the use of loaded firearms in the commission of these crimes. Let me be perfectly clear — this type of criminal behaviour will not be tolerated in our community. If convicted, I am hopeful the courts will impose substantial sentences that reflect the serious and dangerous nature of these offences.' One person was killed and nine others were injured on Saturday as a result of a 'chaotic' shooting at a Juneteenth event near a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in South Carolina. An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. According to Fox Carolina, the Anderson County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the shooting occurred at roughly 10 p.m. on Saturday near the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Anderson County. The sheriff's officers noted that the shooting occurred after a fight. 'Anderson County deputies are responding after multiple people are shot on Saturday evening,' the Anderson County Sheriff's Office said in a post on Instagram. 'At least 10 people were gunned down in a neighborhood along Scarborough Road after a fight ensued on the street and shots rang out.' Law enforcement officials confirmed that one individual was killed, one individual was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital, and at least eight other individuals were transported to local hospitals as a result of Saturday's shooting incident. 'The chaotic scene brought in more than 100 law enforcement personnel, EMS, firefighters, troopers and SCDNR after hundreds of people scattered, leaving behind shoes and debris in the roadway,' the Anderson County Sheriff's Office said. 'We know the crowd gathered for a Juneteenth celebration for the sixth year in a row.' READ MORE: 3 killed, 2 wounded in shooting near Salt Lake City According to WSPA, the Anderson County Coroner identified the deceased victim in Saturday's shooting as 35-year-old Laporshia Janae Gray Cobb. The Anderson County Coroner determined that the 35-year-old victim was killed as a result of a gunshot wound she sustained in her abdomen. WSPA noted that Cobb's death has been ruled a homicide. Fox Carolina reported that 18-year-old Tiyelle Rakelle Demon Hollings was arrested and charged for murder and for the possession of a weapon during a violent crime. In a statement obtained by WSPA, Shale Remien, an Anderson County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, said that 'chaos is an understatement' when describing Saturday's crime scene. 'What we do know is that multiple shots rang out with multiple people hurt all at the same time,' Remien said. 'We had people who were being taken physically from the scene, and that is why you see the debris. You see pieces of clothing; you see everything just scattered on the ground at this point in time, because we even have people who took off within their own cars in order to get to the hospital.'
