‘The Parenting' Review: Meet the Poltergeist

'The Parenting,' a raunchy, gross-out horror-comedy directed by Craig Johnson, has plenty of toilet humor and gay jokes stuffed into its tedious running time, few of them clever or funny. Its best bit is in the setup: After a family is killed at home in the early 1980s, the house sits empty until the present day, when it is converted into an Airbnb that the young couple Josh (Brandon Flynn) and Rohan (Nik Dodani) rent for a weekend getaway. 'This place is a mansion,' Rohan enthuses, about what in the '80s was an ordinary suburban household. The punchline is that in this economy, no one can afford to buy even a haunted house anymore. Yes, there's a 400-year-old poltergeist terrorizing inhabitants. But it would sure beat renting. The boys have secured this spacious if malevolent abode as an occasion to introduce each other to their parents, who are played by television royalty: Lisa Kudrow, Dean Norris, Edie Falco and Brian Cox. Some early water-and-oil mingling feels like a tepid riff on 'Meet the Parents,' but when the demonic intrigue ramps up, the tone shifts to full-blown slapstick lunacy, with heads spinning 'Exorcist'-style, family members projectile vomiting, and in a meanspirited fashion, more than one Pomeranian getting brutally butchered. The cast is game — especially Cox, who gets to do some over-the-top Linda Blair mugging — but the script, by a 'Saturday Night Live' writer, Kent Sublette, is puerile and abrasive, lacking the wit of 'Evil Dead' (an obvious influence) and the brio of 'Scary Movie.' The ParentingRated R Rated R for crude humor, strong language, violence and some mild drug use. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes. Watch on Max.

'The Parenting' review: Parker Posey, Brian Cox, Edie Falco, Lisa Kudrow star in uneven horror-comedy

It's a crossover of our favourite stars from The White Lotus, Succession, The Sopranos, Friends, Breaking Bad, 13 Reasons Why and Atypical. If that has your head spinning, that's the correct response to the new movie The Parenting (releasing March 13 on Crave in Canada, Max in the U.S.), with the combined star power of Parker Posey, Brian Cox, Edie Falco, Lisa Kudrow, Dean Norris, Brandon Flynn and Nik Dodani. A horror-comedy film, The Parenting , directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) and written by Kent Sublette (Saturday Night Live), rests of the wacky side of the genre. But it may leave you wanting more from this all-star cast. The film starts in 1983, a mother is trying to get her kids to come downstairs for dinner, while she also cries over the final episode of M*A*S*H. Burning the frozen pizza in the process, she tries to air out the kitchen smoke and gets pulled down to the basement by a weird creature, quickly snatching up her son as well. As her daughter comes out of her room, she sees the wallpaper on the walls mysteriously peeling off, the door to her bedroom is suddenly locked and a creature attacks her too. Then we move on to the present day, where Josh (Flynn) and Rohan (Dodani) have rented a home in the country to meet each other's parents, and for their parents to meet as well. Rohan also plans to propose to Josh during the trip. Josh and Rohan arrive first, with their dog Kate, and are greeted by Brenda (Posey), who doesn't own the home, but helps the owners manage the property, also revealing that they're the first renters. She's a bit of an odd ball, her hair styled in a giant braid down her back, with some odd questions and responses. For example, when Josh and Rohan confirm they're gay Brenda says, "That works." She also starts drawing a circle in the dirt around the property. When Josh and Roan's parents arrive, they couldn't be more different. Rohan's adoptive parents Frank (Cox) and Susan (Falco) are more reserved, while Liddy (Kudrow) and Cliff (Norris) are the wackier pair. And the couples don't really get along. Susan, in particular, has a lot of questions for Liddy, who's not giving sufficient answers, like why her name is a short form for Elizabeth, but with two Ds. As they all try to make themselves comfortable, odd things start happening in the home, like banging sounds in the night. And when they say the Wifi password provided by Brenda, the demon from the past surfaces, and claims Frank's body. In order to have fun with The Parenting, you have to just lean into the ridiculousness of the story, like seeing Cox projectile vomiting "wacky noddles" and coming down to breakfast naked. But while some things may give you a chuckle, other comedic elements completely bomb. Like when Frank, as the demon, start spewing homophobic slurs at Josh. It just felt unnecessary and a cheap attempt at comedy that this film didn't need. Thanks for this impressive casts, there are moments that stand out as fun to watch. Scenes with Falco and Kudrow, in particular, are highlights, bouncing off of each other with some witty banter (these two need to star in a show together ASAP). And Posey is always a delight to watch on screen, giving us that perfect mysterious weirdo energy that we love. From a haunted house standout, The Parenting doesn't really venture into scares territory. This is a movie that feels like it doesn't give its impressive cast enough room to use their skills, though it would have totally tanked without their expert abilities. If you're a fan of this crew of actors, it's likely something you'll be enticed to put on, and while the storytelling is quite disjointed, sometimes you just want carefree laughs. You can't take your eyes off the screen with all these TV legends involved.

The real star of the haunted-house movie ‘The Parenting' is a 29-room mansion at Doyle Community Park in Leominster

Advertisement 'The Parenting,' which premieres Thursday on Max, is based on a screenplay by Kent Sublette, who is one of 'Saturday Night Live''s head writers. It's a throwback, Johnson said, to the lighthearted jump-scare flicks of their shared 1980s youth — 'Beetlejuice,' 'Gremlins,' 'Ghostbusters.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Nik Dodani, left, and Brandon Flynn in "The Parenting." Seacia Pavao/Warner Bros. Entertainment The film imagines a gay couple (played by Nik Dodani and Brandon Flynn) who have invited their parents to join them for a getaway. Rohan's mother and father (Falco and Cox) are uptight and proper; Flynn's folks (Kudrow and Dean Norris, who played Hank Schrader on 'Breaking Bad') are fountains of corny jokes. The impending nightmare of the two families' mutual discomfort takes an enormous twist when the house they've rented proves to be possessed. It was the site of a teenage seance in the 1980s, one that led to the deaths of three people and the ongoing presence of an evil demon. This mansion at the Doyle Community Park in Leominster was used for exterior shots of the haunted house in the movie "The Parenting." The Trustees Exterior shots of the grand manor at the center of the film were taken at the Advertisement 'It was fun to be here when they were filming,' said Anna Wilkins, a director at the North County Land Trust, which leases office space in the complex. She said the crew ordered truckloads of snow for an exterior scene. The filming became a point of pride for the locals, she said. 'North Central Massachusetts sometimes gets ignored, but for the folks who live here, it's a pretty awesome place.' Edie Falco and Brian Cox in "The Parenting." Seacia Pavao/Warner Bros. Entertainment The film's cast fell into place after Cox signed on. Before shooting the final season of 'Succession,' the veteran actor was looking for something completely different, said Johnson in a video call earlier this week. He got it, and then some: After encountering the demon, Cox's character, Gerald, goes off the deep end. 'I had a failure of imagination,' Johnson recalled with a laugh. 'The studio wanted him, and I was like, 'Good luck. He's never gonna do it. Did you read the script? It's this crazy-demon, haunted house, silly projectile-vomit movie.' But he loved the script.' As Gerald's wife, Falco ('The Sopranos,' 'Nurse Jackie') is a comically withering presence. 'She's not a fussy actor,' said Johnson, whose previous films include 'The Skeleton Twins' with Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig (2014). When he asked Falco if she had any questions about her character, Dorothy, she replied, 'No, I think I get her.' 'And she gave this lived-in, funny, perfectly calibrated performance,' he added. Edie Falco in "The Parenting." Seacia Pavao/Warner Bros. Entertainment The rest of the cast followed suit, Johnson said. Posey, who plays a loony former goth kid who is the house's caretaker, has been delighting fans of 'The White Lotus' with her eccentric Southern belle in the show's current season. 'She's nice and kooky in this movie, too,' said Johnson. 'She brings her own wild ideas to the table, which I'm very open to, and so is Kent.' Advertisement Though Sublette wrote the script before he and Johnson met, the director said he could relate to the theme of the two families' awkward first meeting. He was raised in the 'crunchy Pacific Northwest,' he said. Meanwhile, the parents of his partner of 19 years, the food and humor writer Adam Roberts, are from Boca Raton, Fla. 'When they first met, it was like they were from different planets,' said Johnson. 'I was really interested in a larger theme, which is that there are evil forces in this world, and those evil forces rely on us little squabbling humans to fight with each other over our stupid issues,' he said. 'The demon in the movie sows discord. And that's a tactic to take over the world.' The film plays a horrifying ordeal for laughs, and Johnson has fond memories of the shoot. 'I had a blast,' he said. 'I'd go back in a heartbeat.' James Sullivan can be reached at jamesgsullivan@
