Bombers losing skid hits three
TORONTO — Where do you go from here? The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in a battle with themselves currently, and on Saturday, Mother Nature joined the fight. With a steady shower raining down for much of the night, the Bombers slipped and stumbled to a 31-17 defeat against the Toronto Argonauts before 13,266 in attendance at BMO Field. For the second week in a row, the Blue and Gold left the game with questions surrounding their star quarterback, Zach Collaros, who did not return to the contest after halftime. Collaros finished with five completions on 10 attempts for 79 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception. After the game, head coach Mike O'Shea said he did not have an update on Collaros' status. The Bombers arrived with designs on reclaiming their mojo after suffering back-to-back three-touchdown losses, but left with many of the same questions that have been swirling around this team since the calendar flipped to July. 'People aren't going to like to hear this, but I'm very relaxed about the situation, because you see what's happening, and the answers are easy,' O'Shea said. 'There's a bunch of guys in that room that have seen it go down a pile of different ways, so I believe we have a bunch of guys that just understand, 'Let's make some corrections, let's go to work and let's be better,' So that's one of the reasons why it's easy to just stay even keeled.' The Bombers' losing streak extends to three games as they drop to 3-3, while the Argos snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 2-5. Winnipeg has also lost three in a row against Toronto for the first time in a decade, while its misfortune in The Six stretched to four of the last five contests. Let's look at this one further. The Bombers will leave July without eclipsing 20 points in a contest. The final numbers — 319 net yards of offence — again made the box score look prettier than it actually was for the club. Brady Oliveira, who finished with 82 yards on 13 carries, continues to make do with the underwhelming number of opportunities he gets while the score is still close, but that is where this offence maxes out. Winnipeg had six first downs and 104 yards of net offence in the first half — 46 of which came on a Collaros throw to receiver Nic Demski, his only catch of the night. Desperately searching for a spark in the second half, the visitors attempted a punt fake on their opening drive of the second half but punter Jameison Shehan was pushed out a yard short of the marker. Chris Streveler was better than his last performance in relief, completing 11 of his 18 passes for 148 yards while connecting with Jerreth Sterns on a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The touchdown capped the best drive of the night for the Bombers — 11 plays, 82 yards. Sterns led all Bombers receivers with four catches for 72 yards. 'We've lost games here before, and we know how long of a season is, but ultimately, the bottom line right now is we're just not playing good enough, and we have to get better,' said Streveler. 'And that doesn't just happen because you just trust that it's a long season, you got to put in extra and you got to do a little bit more, and you got to look in the mirror and have tough conversations with yourself and as a team and figure out why we're not winning and correct those mistakes so we can get better. 'We do understand it's a long season and there's still time to get better and put this thing right.' There was an adjustment period for the conditions. Dropped balls, shaky handling and blown tires were a theme in a busy opening quarter as players tried to find their footing. While both teams fell victim to the wet conditions, the Bombers had a tougher time adjusting. Special teams had been the one phase that hadn't let Winnipeg down during their losing streak, but that changed as rookie returner Trey Vaval fielded a punt cleanly but began to lose possession of the slick ball when he clutched it in anticipation of a hit. Brandon Calver completely dislodged the pill, which was touched by the Argos before it went out of bounds. The mishap from Vaval only cost the Bombers three points, as the defence stood strong to force a 32-yard field goal by Hajrullahu, who also connected from 22, 40, 16, 21 and 36 on this night. On the next Winnipeg drive, with Streveler in shotgun for a short second-down, the snap from center Chris Kolankowski never got off the ground, as the ball skidded right past the QB to set up another Winnipeg punt. It was one thing after another for the visitors, who also struggled to tackle throughout the game. 'I mean, we talked about it before the game, potentially wet conditions. We brought extra pairs of cleats and things. I think it's worse than we thought it was going to be for some of us, I guess, but I don't know, at the same time, they're playing in the same conditions too. We were just slipping.' The Bombers' biggest play of the game came on the Argos' ensuing drive, as Kyrie Wilson knocked the ball free from running back Kahlan Laborn, and James Vaughters scooped and scored from 29 yards out to give the visitors their only lead of the game. The kryptonite of the Bombers' defence has been big-bodied receivers. Last week, it was Calgary Stampeders rookie Damien Alford. It was Damonte Coxie on this night. The Argos' fourth-year receiver had no issues catching the wet pigskin, amassing 145 receiving yards and one touchdown on six catches. The 6-3 receiver did most of his damage in the early portions of the contest to help the Argos jump out to a 25-10 lead at halftime, as he caught five passes for 127 yards before the game was 20 minutes old. Toronto's offence opened with a trick play as Nick Arbuckle lateraled to former Bombers returner Janarion Grant, who found a wide-open Coxie for a 41-yard gain. Winnipeg was fortunate the ball was underthrown, because Coxie would've scored. It didn't matter. Two plays later, Arbuckle found Coxie on a 33-yard touchdown to cap a quick strike from the Argos on a four-play, 81-yard drive that took 79 seconds off the clock. 'He's a professional,' said Deatrick Nichols. 'Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses, and he's just pretty good at his strengths. He knows exactly how to win. He's not a fast or a twitchy athlete, but he wins how he wins — body position and everything like that. He's just a professional.' Coxie also accounted for gains of 27, 17 and nine in the first half, as he repeatedly found space in the Winnipeg defence to the point defensive co-ordinator Jordan Younger benched field corner Marquise Bridges. Bridges finished the game; however, after his replacement, Trey Vaval, exited the game in the fourth quarter with an injury. Credit to Arbuckle, who delivered an admirable performance despite taking a beating in the pocket. The Argos' pivot completed 22 of 31 passes for 316 yards and two touchdowns despite being sacked five times. Turnovers. Penalties. Explosive plays. Collectively, they've been the story of the Bombers' losing streak, and this one was no different. Winnipeg left the field with seven turnovers to the Argos' one, and the club's turnover margin has plummeted to a dreadful minus-14 in its last three games. Collaros' first interception led to a field goal for the Boatmen, and his second came inside the red zone, effectively wiping away at least three points for the Blue and Gold. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Meanwhile, Winnipeg finished with six penalties for 55 yards. Some continued to be inexcusable, such as a roughing-the-passer called on Jay Person that extended the Argos' first-quarter drive, which ended with an 18-yard strike from Arbuckle to DaVaris Daniels. The Bombers' defence conceded four big plays, which all came in the first half. That continues to be an area of concern for this club. 'Definitely saw some improvement, but in a game where there's already some conditions that are interesting, you fundamentally have to be really, really sound, and we weren't necessarily fundamentally sound,' said O'Shea. 'You needed to add that on top of it this game, and I don't know that we were ready to add that back on top of some of the other things we were trying to fix.' EastEnders fans left in tears as Linda Carter says goodbye in 'end of an era'
EastEnders fans were left feeling tearful watching last night's episode, as Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) left the Queen Vic pub. Linda chose to put the boozer up for auction as she became ready to start a new chapter in her life. The Carter family has lived in the pub since 2013 and have faced a multitude of dramatic ordeals since then. In recent years, Linda has dealt with Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) getting lost at sea, murdering Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), covering up his death with The Six and earlier this year, the pub exploded as a result of Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) crashing his car into the side of the building. And that's not even the half of it! It's no surprise that Linda wants to start again. In the instalment that aired last night, she handed the keys over to Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace), who became the new owner as a result of Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) gaining access to Martin Fowler's (James Bye) life insurance. To get her head around the change, Linda decided to temporarily leave Walford. Having been handed tickets for a cruise from mum Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe), she packed her belongings and waved goodbye to Albert Square. The scenes marked a massive end of an era, and fans of the BBC One soap were incredibly moved watching Linda depart. Taking to social media platform X, this fan said: 'Truly the end of an era, just glad that this time it's a decision that's been made on her terms and she's been allowed to say a proper goodbye to the old place and that next chapter of linda carter is going to be sublime, i can feel it #eastenders.' This audience member reflected on the 12 years Linda lived in the pub and wrote: 'Twelve PHENOMENAL years of having Linda Carter as landlady has come to an end. Kellie has been a powerhouse since joining the show and embodied the landlady role to perfection. 'Going to miss Linda front and centre in the Vic but excited to see what she moves onto next.' Another wrote: 'Still blows my mind that Linda first took over the pub nearly 12 (!!!) years ago, where has the time gone #EastEnders.' EastEnders' Sharon ‘to the rescue' as prison looms for major characters
EastEnders fans may not have seen Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) for a good few months now, but she comes to The Six's rescue this week. In forthcoming scenes on the BBC soap, Sharon's half-sister Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) comes dangerously close to landing the murderous Walford women in prison when she considers telling the police about Bernie Taylor's (Clair Norris) recent shenanigans. Before she departed Albert Square earlier this month, Bernie had been stealing money out of the Panesars' businesses as revenge for The Six killing her brother Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters). When Vicki was roped in to audit the Panesars' accounts, she uncovered Bernie's fraudulent activities and blackmailed her, wanting a cut of some of the cash to repay a loan to Sharon. However, Bernie eventually turned the tables on her, and told the Panesars it was Vicki who had been stealing from them. While Bernie's lies were eventually exposed to Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal), she let Bernie off the hook and escape to Spain with the cash after pleas from Keanu's killer Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) and fellow members of The Six Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) to set Bernie free. Still in the dark about the real reasons Bernie set her up, this week Vicki is still smarting, while still scrambling to raise the cash to pay Sharon back. When Kathy gets wind of Vicki's plan to go to the police about Bernie, she makes a panicked call to Sharon, who is still in Australia, asking her to intervene. She suggests Sharon should walk back her threat to chuck Vicki out of No. 43 if she doesn't repay her debts in the hope it will stop Vicki from feeling the pressure, and thus the need to go to the police about Bernie… Sharon was last seen on the day of Martin Fowler's (James Bye) funeral back in April. Just shortly after Vicki's arrival in Walford, Sharon set off to Australia to look after Vicki's mum and her longtime best friend Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully), who was struggling to come to terms with the loss of her brother Martin. Fresh horror for The Six in EastEnders as destructive report set to be filed
Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) threatens to blow The Six's cover in EastEnders next week. 18 months on from Keanu Taylor's (Danny Walters) death, the women are once again fearing that they'll end up behind bars. As viewers of the BBC One soap will recall, Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) stabbed Keanu with a meat thermometer to prevent him throttling best mate Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth), Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal), Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Denise Fox (Diane Parish) then helped the ladies to conceal the murder, burying his body under the caff. Eventually, twisted Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) went to his grave with authorities believing that he was the one who committed the crime. But that wasn't before the grizzly truth was revealed to Keanu's grieving sister Bernie (Clair Norris). In the months that followed – now trustee of the Panesar business empire – she swindled the family out of thousands, placing fake invoices for repairs to their GP practice. It wasn't long after Vicki began some accountancy work on Bernie's behalf that her dodgy dealings were exposed. She threatened to tell the Panesars what Bernie was up to, unless she coughed up half of the cash so that she could pay off her debts to sister Sharon and ensure she had a roof over her head. Bernie reluctantly went along with the plan, but then turned the tables by framing Vicki. Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) knew that something suspicious was afoot after threatening Vicki and her partner's son Joel Marshall (Max Murray), and planted spyware in Bernie's laptop. The technology proved what she was up to – but before he could stop her, she fled to Spain. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? In the aftermath, the Panesars have found themselves in financial ruin and Ravi has turned to drug dealing. Vicki has found herself in a similar predicament, and she knows that unless she finds the cash, Sharon will kick her out. More Trending In upcoming scenes, Vicki meets with her aunty Kath' to discuss her problems, and says that she's considering reporting Bernie to the police. Now, as you can imagine, the last thing The Six need is further questioning and Bernie wouldn't hesitate to spill the truth if trouble came her way again. Suki Waterhouse Gets Hernia From Tight Leather Pants
Suki Waterhouse may have unlocked a new fear for us, thanks to a risky fashion choice. When fans started wondering about her whereabouts on social media, the Daisy Jones & The Six star opened up about a recent health scare that caused her sudden absence. ''Suki you never tweet anymore' have you ever considered I wore pants so tight 6 months ago it caused a hernia & I've been too scared to tell you,' the singer-songwriter wrote to her followers on Monday, July 14. The multihyphenate also shared a series of photos from the incident, including a selfie from a hospital bed and a photo of her performing in the skin-tight leather pants that caused her hernia. Naturally, the replies to her post were filled with concern and confusion, as one fan wrote, 'hope you're feeling better my dear, take care of yourself ❤️.' Another person took the opportunity to share their own experience with the condition, which involves the displacement of organs through the abdomen or groin area. 'Hey I gave my dad a hernia once x,' the fan wrote, to which Suki jokingly replied, 'well done!!' BTW: Here's a closer look at the infamous leather pants in action. Despite being hospitalized, she still sported wired headphones and kept a blue nicotine vape nearby. 'Vape in the hospital is diabolical,' someone responded, while Suki agreed, writing, 'So true.' Her hospitalization comes after she privately welcomed her daughter with Robert Pattinson in March 2024. The couple announced the birth of their baby the following month with an Instagram post of Suki holding her newborn in a swaddled blanket. 'Welcome to the world angel ❤️,' she captioned the Polaroid photo. As the 'Model, Actress, Whatever' artist is on the mend, she's set to take the stage at Colorado's Up in the Sky Music Festival this summer on August 8. Suki is also hitting the road in support of her sophomore album, Memoir of a Sparklemuffin, with a slew of festival shows and as an opening act on Laufey's A Matter of Time Tour later this fall.
