File Photo by Jim Ruymen/UPI | License Photo June 24 (UPI) -- Lionsgate has released a trailer for horror sequel The Strangers: Chapter 2, which picks up right where Chapter 1 left off. The trailer, released Tuesday, finds Maya (Madelaine Petsch) continuing to be terrorized by the trio of masked assailants in a small town where she and her boyfriend, Ryan (Froy Gutierrez), became stranded. The sequel finds Maya fleeing from the attackers while trying to unravel the mystery of their identities. Director Renny Harlin returns to helm the second film in the trilogy. All three movies were filmed back-to-back. Petsch previously said the sequels would delve deeper into the identities and motivations of the titular villains. "Some questions will be answered, of course, to get inside the machinations of 'the strangers,'" she told UPI in May 2024. "But we are not going to lose the innate terror that is so visceral within the original. We are aware of it." The Strangers: Chapter 2 releases in theaters Sept. 26. The film series starring Petsch is a remake of the 2008 movie starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.

Blumhouse Buys Rights to 'Saw' Franchise
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Blumhouse already boasts its share of horror franchises like "Insidious" and "Five Nights at Freddy's", and now it will be adding "Saw" to its arsenal of scares. The company has acquired rights to all future "Saw" films, according to Variety. Read More: Jeremy Allen White Transforms Into Bruce Springsteen in Biopic First Look We don't know much Blumhouse paid for the rights, but we know they acquired them from producers Oren Koules and Mark Burg. Lionsgate will continue to have a 50% stake in the franchise. Still from "Saw". Still from "Saw". Lionsgate Fans may be enthused to hear the news, considering it means Blumhouse and Lionsgate have the motivation to release more installments. News broke in March that "Saw XI" had been removed from Lionsgate's list of upcoming releases, to be replaced with "The Strangers: Chapter 2". There was no word on exactly why "Saw XI" was canceled, but co-writer Patrick Melton told The Hollywood Reporter that if the film wasn't made, it would have nothing to do with the creative side of things. "Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that," Melton said. He put the blame for the delays at the "managerial level." Blumhouse's acquisition of the "Saw" franchise could be seen to represent a homecoming of sorts. It brings the franchise back to James Wan who directed the first entry in the series. James Wan's Atomic Monster merged with Blumhouse in 2024. Blumhouse CEO James Blum said Wan and "Saw" writer Leigh Whannell will be "brought back in the fold" and guiding future installments. 'Saw' holds a special place in my heart," Wan told Variety. "Coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is both thrilling and deeply personal." "For me, this will mark a significant creative return to the 'Saw' franchise for the first time since the early days, and I'm very much looking forward to embracing the original spirit whilst pushing the legacy forward in bold, unexpected ways." If past success proves to be an indicator of the franchise's future, financially, Blumhouse is likely in for a windfall. All told, the ten "Saw" films have taken in over $1 billion at the global box office. SAW XI Delayed Indefinitely, THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 2 Takes Its Fall 2025 Release Date
It appears that Jigsaw will not be appearing this fall to terrify moviegoers, as is tradition. Sadly, it looks like Saw XI has been delayed indefinitely, thanks to disagreements behind-the-scenes. This news originally came to light late last week. But Lionsgate isn't leaving a proper horror film out of their Halloween season plans. Despite Saw XI being taken off the calendar, via The Hollywood Reporter, we've learned that Lionsgate has turned over the September 26 slot to a different horror show, The Strangers: Chapter 2. This doesn't mean that Jigsaw won't be back at some point, however. No, the iconic cinematic killer never goes away for very long. He simply makes too much money to ever retire. On Monday, Lionsgate shared a 'statement' from Billy the Puppet, the ventriloquist dummy used in most of the films by the character of John Kramer, aka Jigsaw: The statement, rather hilariously, came over LinkedIn, where Billy's status remained 'Employed.' It said 'I've seen the rumors. They say it's Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over.' With ten entries in the Saw franchise since James Wan's 2004 original, it is very evident that indeed, the game will never be over. One way or another, Jigsaw will always find a way to come back. Meanwhile, getting the coveted spooky season release window is a show of confidence from Lionsgate in The Strangers franchise, which began in 2008. Lionsgate then revived the franchise last year, announcing a whole new trilogy for the home invasion horror series. Madelaine Petsch reprises her role after starring in The Strangers: Chapter 1, which Lionsgate released in May, 2024. This marks the second feature in the planned stand-alone The Strangers trilogy. Lionsgate shot the second and third movies consecutively after the first one. Hopefully, we'll find out soon what the future holds for the eleventh Saw movie as The Strangers takes its place.
