Relay star Lily James eyes 'unlikely roles'

Lily James is keen to play "unlikely roles". The 36-year-old actress - who stars alongside Riz Ahmed and Sam Worthington in the thriller film Relay - has revealed that she's eager to challenge herself in her professional life. Asked if she would've been interested in Relay if it was more "conventional", Lily told The Hollywood Reporter: "Honestly, I was so excited to work with [director] David Mackenzie and Riz that I almost would've done any old thing that they put in front of me. "That being said, you love to find work that's surprising and characters that take you in a direction you didn't anticipate. And particularly at this point in my career, I want to keep pushing myself to play unlikely roles, roles that surprise me, and have something to get my teeth into. So that [unconventionality] was definitely what was very appealing about this role and story." Lily recalled being wowed by the Relay script, and she hopes that film fans are similarly surprised by the plot. The actress explained: "Relay felt like this really gripping, dark thriller that exposes the world of whistleblowers and the idea of this greater control and always being watched. It felt really surprising, and I was thrilled to get to work with such a unique filmmaker in David Mackenzie. His movies feel so cinematic and grounded and bold and original." Lily also relished the experience of working with Riz, describing her 42-year-old co-star as "one of the most exciting actors out there". Lily and Riz managed to develop a great chemistry, even though they rarely filmed together. She said: "Riz is also one of the most exciting actors out there, especially when you see what he's able to convey with no dialogue in the first 20 minutes of the movie. "The connection we were able to build despite our characters very rarely being in the same room together was a real challenge. And when I watched the movie for the first time at TIFF on the big screen, I was like, 'Wow, it's incredible that there's this great electricity between these two characters when they barely meet.' So it was quite a sleight of hand that David pulled that off in terms of filmmaking." Meanwhile, Lily previously admitted that she still suffers self-doubts. The actress told The Talks: "I don't stay up all night getting nervous about work. I do get frightened of not being good enough. "I'll get quite anxious after days where I've had a big emotional scene, I worry that I haven't given enough or I get frightened that I haven't been true enough. So that's a kind of fear that lasts pretty much the whole shoot. But it's doesn't make me nervous, weirdly — except in auditions."

Sean Baker demands 'full control' over film projects

Sean Baker wants "full autonomy" over all of his films. The 54-year-old filmmaker enjoyed huge success as the director of 'Anora', the romantic-comedy drama movie, in 2024, and Sean has now confirmed that his next project will be "in the same wheelhouse". During an appearance on the 'It Happened in Hollywood' podcast, Sean shared: "Don't expect a Marvel film. It's not going to happen. "I'm intentionally going to stay in the same wheelhouse and with the approximate same budget. I think that I enjoy working in this space of 100 percent independent." 'Anora' won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, while it also earned five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Mikey Madison), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. And Sean doesn't have any intention of changing his approach to film-making. He said: "I'm not working for even a mini studio. I'm making my film independently and then going the old school route of hopefully a bidding war or somebody licensing the movie. "I think that's the only way to have full autonomy and control over your vision. So it'll be that. Expect more of the same." Sean is currently "exploring some ideas" for his next film project. Asked about his next movie, Sean replied: "I'm not sure yet. I'm still exploring some ideas." Earlier this year, Sean warned that a film's production shouldn't be "too controlled". The acclaimed filmmaker explained that his creative process has hardly changed over the years. Sean - whose previous directing credits include 'Four Letter Words', 'Tangerine' and 'Red Rocket' - told The Talks: "I try to keep it small, I try to keep us always in a sort of guerilla, indie, shoot from the hip sort of mentality, keeping open to serendipity and happy accidents. The only way to do that is to be controlled — you have a job to do, and you're spending people's money, and you have a limited amount of time — but you can't be too controlled. "So what I always like to say is: you control 90 percent but then you leave 10 percent up to the film gods, because those happy accidents are what make these movies. You have to be open to real life! You try for minimal lighting, you try for real location, you take the actors and you throw them into real life and see what happens. I try my best to retain that." Sean believes that his past success has actually complicated his work. He explained: "It does get harder because I'm a higher profile now. It's a little bit harder. But I also work with an incredible crew that really understands that sort of DIY film-making and wanting to stay on the fringe and stay out of the Hollywood machine."

Brie Larson to release party-themed cookbook

"Captain Marvel' actress Brie Larson has announced plans to release 'Party People', a party-themed cookbook, later this year. The 35-year-old actress has joined forces with best friend and chef Courtney McBroom to create the new cookbook that they'll release later this year, reports She told "Through [our friendship], we've thrown many parties together. We have a really solid group of girlfriends, and whether it's been road trips or at someone's house, parties, whatever, we're really good at celebrating. And part of it is because we love doing it. "It's not just about the food. It's about knowing how to cook things confidently so that you can enjoy your party … The recipes are based on those things so you can maximize time with your guests and not feel like you're the one stuck in the kitchen while everybody else is having fun." 'Party People' will feature more than 100 recipes and party ideas, but McBroom says 'Party People' isn't a conventional cookbook,' reports She said: "It doesn't have to be hard. You don't have to do a ton of work to bring all of your friends together and your loved ones and to surround yourself with community. And that was one of the main things we wanted to do, is make sure we were helping people do that." Meanwhile, Larson earlier said that she hopes her work helps people to "feel less alone". The movie star also explained that she's felt more free to express herself over recent years. Larson told The Talks: "As I have gotten older and I have had the courage to speak out, I realised that the things that are inside of me, the things I am most afraid of, everyone is and I feel a sense of inner freedom by expressing it. "By relating to people like yourself, you can go, 'Yeah. You are also crazy. I felt that, too.' What I am looking for in this world is a sense of not feeling alone, and that's one of the greatest gifts you can give to another person. I hope that my work does that. I hope that when people leave the theatre they feel less alone." Indo-Asian News Service
