Jamal Roberts, a grade school physical education teacher from Mississippi, won Season 23 of 'American Idol' on Sunday after wowing the judges with his versatility. 'You can sing things that are contemporary, and it fits. You can sing things that are throwback, and it fits,' first-year judge Carrie Underwood told Roberts during the finale, per The Washington Post. 'You just have this incredible ability to just make things your own, and it all sounds fresh and new and fun.' He defeated runner-up country singer John Foster and third-place Breanna Nix in a tally of 26 million total votes, twice as many as last year, host Ryan Seacrest said per The Hollywood Reporter. Mets star Francisco Lindor has a new walk-up song to go with `My Girl'
NEW YORK -- After more than 11 months and hundreds of singalongs, 'My Girl' finally has some company atop the charts at Citi Field. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, whose pivot to The Temptations' 'My Girl' as his walk-up song last May coincided with a turnaround in fortunes for Lindor and his teammates, added 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' — the 1967 duet by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell — to his rotation prior to his second at-bat in Friday's 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. 'It's the vibes — the vibes I'm in right now,' Lindor said with a grin Friday night. 'I think it's a fantastic song. Hopefully the fans can vibe to it, too.' Lindor's success with 'My Girl' and the accompanying pop culture sensation made his pivot a surprise to the 41,243 fans in attendance Friday, if not his teammates. Lindor was batting .210 and the Mets were 22-30 when he debuted 'My Girl' last May 28, but Lindor hit .306 the rest of the way and finished second in NL MVP balloting as New York made it to the National League Championship Series. The Temptations performed the song, along with the national anthem, prior to Game 5 of the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lindor hit a leadoff homer for the first-place Mets on Friday — his 34th round-tripper in 137 games since introducing 'My Girl.' 'There were some fans that yelled at me,' Lindor said. 'But there were some other ones that were singing.' Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who is walking up to Eric Clapton's 'Layla' this year after using Rush's 'Working Man' and Don McLean's 'American Pie' in previous seasons, said Lindor hinted at the change during the just-concluded road trip to St. Louis and Arizona. 'He said he was going to do it and no one believed him,' Alonso said Saturday. 'I think it's a good one — that's a great walk-up song.' Lindor acknowledged some teammates wanted him to stick with 'My Girl' and said he'd alternate the songs in hopes his new selection grows in popularity. 'Man, the movie 'Remember The Titans' — who doesn't know that?' Lindor said, referring to the song's usage in the 2000 film. 'It's a great song. So we'll see if it catches on. If it doesn't catch on — since I got pushback from some people — they're still going to get 'My Girl.''

The fact that Jamal Roberts bestowed both of his daughters with musical names – Harmoni, 6, and Lyrik, 3 – is a definite testament to his devotion to music. In fact, he joked with Parade that he had to argue with their mamas to make it happen. 'I always said, even before I had kids, that I was going to name my kids after music,' the 27-year-old PE teacher from Meridian, MS, said. 'If I had another girl, she would be Melody. And then I had thought about Symphony, all these beautiful names. I love my daughters. They are my world, my life. They're the reason I'm here and working so hard to keep smiles on those little faces.' Jamal has been singing since he was 2 years old, so he has been pretty much locked into music since he was a toddler. It was his grandparents who inspired him, urging him to Sunday morning services and encouraging him to always do his best. 🎬🎬 As a result, he grew up singing Michael Jackson and The Temptations' songs. And when he gets a chance, he plans to bring one of their songs to the Idol stage. That opportunity may come tonight, when the Top 8 perform songs selected by Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie or Carrie Underwood in the 'Judge's Song Contest.' 'I do think I'm going to try to do a Temptations song,' Jamal told Parade at the Hulu Get Real event. 'I'm going to try to bring it out of the hat. I've seen so many comments and so many fans and viewers and friends that were like, 'You should get up there and do a Temptations song.' I'm going to try to get up there and give it a try.' Related: As mentioned, Jamal is a PE Teacher, not a music teacher. And during this run on American Idol, he's been receiving lots of messages and videos from his students back home, which makes him feel that he's doing something right, that all these young kids are looking up to him. Related: 'I never wanted to move out of Meridian, actually,' he says when asked why he didn't relocate somewhere where it would be easier to launch his music career. 'I'm not a fan of traffic; Meridian doesn't have traffic. You don't have to wait hours to eat. Things like that that just became normal for me. When you go out of town, things are different. But growing up, I had a good experience in Meridian. Now, it's not like it used to be. It's changed, but I believe it can get back, and I believe I can help it get that way.' Idol may just be his ticket to accomplish that, especially if he makes it to the Top 5 and beyond. And if his performance of Tom Odell's "Heal" – the most watched video of the Top 10 – is any indication, he's on his way. And helping him to achieve his goals, in addition to the advice he gets each week from Luke, Lionel and Carrie, is the expertise he receives from the behind-the-scenes vocal coaches.
