Have your say on whether The 1975 were 'insufferable' at Glasto

The 1975 returned to the spotlight with a headline set at Glastonbury - but singer Matty Healy's posturing and subtle Taylor Swift jabs left fans both thrilled and irrated. What did you think to their performance? Everyone's talking about The 1975's headline set at Glastonbury - some saying it was 'insufferable' while others were raving about it. The band returned to Worthy Farm on Friday night to headline the Pyramid Stage, marking what's reportedly their only show of the year. Naturally, the often divisive band's theatrical performance sparked mixed reactions online - even from longtime fans. ‌ Singer Matty Healy opened the set holding a pint of Guinness he didn't seem to drink, with a cigarette in the other hand. It set the tone for a performance that aimed to be memorable, if a little provocative - and some felt irksome. Early on, Healy appeared to reference his brief relationship with Taylor Swift, which made headlines in 2023. The short-lived romance is widely believed to have influenced Swift's latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, and the frontman didn't shy away from the connection onstage. ‌ The band had kept a low profile in recent months, but for their Glastonbury return, they clearly went all in. The debate now is whether that effort paid off - or if it all felt a bit too much. Take our poll below. The divisive singer initially made many in the audience squirm with his own self aggrandisment, saying: "What this moment is making me realise is that - yeah. This moment is making me realise. I probably am the best so I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. A poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. I wanted to remind you - this poetry, I believed in it for you." The band then started singing their hit, Chocolate – possibly the least poetic song in their catalogue – before he then said he was joking about being a poet. Were The 1975 'insufferable'? Take our poll below. If you can't see it, click here The headline set divided people on social media: 'Matty Healy swaggering about with a pint he's no intention of drinking is the most annoying thing I've ever seen,' said one. ‌ Another added: 'Matty Healy carrying a pint of Guinness around to appear relatable and has not drunk a single sip in 10 minutes.' A third said: 'Matty Healy trolls on stage at Glastonbury: 'I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation — the best, what do we say? A poet.' Another said: 'The thing which makes Matty Healy so insufferable is it's very easy to imagine that all the b*llendery he does on stage isn't just for the performance but that he would genuinely sashay into Gregg's reciting 14th century French poetry.' ‌ Another added: 'Matty Healy trying to play the archetypal rock & roller with the leather jacket, pint of Guinness and a cigarette while simultaneously performing some of the blandest music imaginable is quite the contradiction. About as rock & roll as Aled Jones.' But others were loving the set- even if they had issues with the frontman One said: 'Say what you want about matty Healy but he is a SHOW MAN.' Another said: 'The 1975's music is really good, but Matty Healy really is an insufferable b*llend of a frontman!' Another added: 'I do understand why Matty Healy is a polarising character but I think The 1975 are a brilliant band with sharp songwriting, brilliant diversity in sound & excellent musicianship. Still my favourites!' ‌ A fourth said: 'Should have been all about the #1975 but Healy has decided to hijack it and turn in a car crash performance. You can see it in the bands faces. All he had to do was hold it together for one day and he's failed miserably.' A fifth said: 'The 1975 are actually pretty good! It's just a shame that Matty Healy is an absolute weapon.' It comes as a source has revealed to The Mirror that there was much less of a crowd for the 1975, with Lewis Capaldi and CMAT attracting a bigger number of people to the Pyramid Stage. Some fans could be heard saying it wasn't their vibe and they headed away from the stage. Later in the show, Matty said: ""Use your platform, that's what they say. People who watch this might be disappointed at the lack of politics in this show... We honestly don't want our legacy to be one of politics, we want it to be of love and friendship. I don't think we need more politics, we need more love. I know that's really basic."

Matty Healy of The 1975's 'car crash set' leaves Glastonbury crowd divided

Their headline slot at Glastonbury is set to be the band's only gig this year. The 1975 headlined Glastonbury last night, Friday June 27. But their performance appeared to massively divide the audience, many of whom took to social media to complain about frontman Matty Healy's 'insufferable' stage presence. Their slot at Glasto's Pyramid Stage is to be their only show of the year, and Matty Healy and his fellow band members "pulled out all the stops" to ensure their performance was unforgettable. Healy emerged onto the stage with a pint of Guinness – which he didn't appear to be drinking – in one hand and a cigarette in the other. ‌ Early into the set, the star appeared to make fun of his ex Taylor Swift, who allegedly wrote some of her most recent album The Tortured Poets Department about their brief relationship, reported Somerset Live. ‌ On stage he told fans: "What this moment is making me realise is that - yeah. This moment is making me realise. I probably am the best so I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation. A poet, ladies and gentlemen, is what I am. I wanted to remind you - this poetry, I believed in it for you." Glastonbury headliners The 1975 issue warning to fans ahead of tonight's set

EXCLUSIVE: A source close to the band told the Mirror that the Somebody Else hitmakers are planning to step out with a few surprises up their sleeve during their performance Fans of The 1975 should prepare for some special surprises when they headline Glastonbury for the first time this evening. The band, who are playing on the Pyramid Stage from 10.15pm, have been relatively quiet over recent months but will return to the spotlight in style tonight. ‌ Matty Healy and his band mates have 'pulled out all the stops' to ensure their set this evening is one to remember. ‌ 'Everyone was so blown away that Matty, Ross, George and Adam were headlining, but it's no surprise given how loved they are universally,' a source close to the band tells us. 'They've played Glastonbury before, but this is the boys at their very best and then some. They're one of the biggest bands in the world, and their tours sell out almost instantly, but to see them on the Pyramid Stage in the headline slot, nobody could have expected this. Everyone behind the scenes has worked so hard to pull out all the stops - fans should expect a few surprises.' 'Matty once said that people should be 'on guard for a year' because he would lose his mind about it and it's certainly been one of their major highlights of their career and it's only going to get even bigger for the four lads." Healy hit headlines across the world in 2023 when he enjoyed a brief romantic relationship with a newly-single Taylor Swift. Their union fizzled out within weeks but was enough to inspire the Shake It Off singer to mention Healy in a number of tracks on her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department. ‌ On a podcast in October, Healy seemingly revealed he would not be producing a musical reply to Swift's swipes - saying that he is 'not interested in' writing about the 'casual romantic liaisons' he has 'become known for'. 'If I made a record about, I don't know, all the stuff that was said about me, or my casual romantic liaisons, or my, whatever it may be, that I've kind of become known for, just because I was famous,' he mused. 'I think that's an obvious thing to draw from. I'm just not interested in it. And I think that the maintenance of the status quo is something that I always fight against." ‌ 'So the idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, that by the time I put it out is going to be like, two years old. I see people doing that as well, and it's just not interesting.' Healy, who is now engaged to model Gabbriette, is better known to many as The 1975 frontman who have produced era-defining music for a legion of loyal fans. ‌ The group is made up of singer Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, guitarist Adam Hann, and drummer George Daniel, who is pop star Charli XCX's fiancé. The four school friends formed the band in 2002 and shot to fame with the release of their chart-topping self-titled album The 1975. They saw similar success with the release of A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships and Being Funny In A Foreign Language. This is their first time headline Glastonbury. Healy's mother, Loose Woman panellist, Denise Welch, celebrated the news by posting the Glastonbury line-up on Instagram, saying: 'I guess I'll be going to my first UK festival!!!' Welch also added a post on her Instagram story saying: 'Look who's headlining on the Friday!!! Popping out to buy some wellies.' The 1975 has won four Brit awards, claiming the British Group award twice, along with British Album of the Year in 2019 and Best Rock/Alternative in 2023.

Inside Matty Healy's surprising and short-lived Taylor Swift romance

Glastonbury headliner The 1975's star Matty Healy and Taylor Swift's romance took fans by a surprise, but their love story spans back over 10 years. Here's how it all unfolded The whirlwind fling between Taylor Swift and Matty Healy, The 1975's frontman, left fans scratching their heads with more questions than answers after a series of sneaky backstage sightings and intriguing lyrics. But while the public watched every move, the short-lived romance seemed tumultuous, possibly even messier than what met the public eye. After her split from long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn, Taylor was suddenly linked to The 1975's Matty Healy – a man whose chaotic reputation couldn't be more different from her understated ex. Matty's presence became immediately noticeable at Taylor's Eras Tour concerts, lip-syncing words like 'This one is about you,' while fans tried to decode glances and gestures between the pair that seemed way too deliberate to be random. ‌ ‌ Denise Welch's son Matty, now 36, and singer Taylor, now 35, didn't make it Instagram official, they were far from secretive. In between dinner dates they were snapped by paparazzi and frequent departures from her New York City apartment – and he even performed with Phoebe Bridgers – one of Taylor's close friends – mid-tour. Online, the Swiftie timeline went into overdrive: some were shipping it and some were in total denial. Taylor Swift and Matty Healy: From flirtation to fallout It may have only been public for a blip in 2023, but Taylor Swift and Matty Healy's connection reaches back 10 years. Fans are convinced her heartbreak album - The Tortured Poets Department is all about him. 2014 - 2015: Flirty Beginnings They first met in November 2014 at one of his shows. By December, rumours were swirling they were seeing each other but Healy quickly shut it down as 'fake', insisting they'd only exchanged numbers. 'As much as it'd be amazing for me if it did, unfortunately it didn't,' he said. In 2016, he downplayed their connection again, calling the idea of dating Swift 'emasculating.' After backlash, Healy clarified he meant being seen as a pop star's boyfriend before being recognised for his own music and stressed he had 'a lot of respect and admiration for her.' ‌ 2023: Taylor 'madly in love' with Matty Things went quiet until early 2023 - then Swift shocked fans by performing a surprise set at The 1975's London show in January. By April, she had split from long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Just weeks later, it appeared she and Healy were on. Healy jetted in to watch her Eras Tour shows, with fans spotting both of them mouthing 'This one's about you… I love you' on stage. They were pictured holding hands, cuddling at NYC hotspots, and kissing at members-only club Zero Bond. ‌ READ MORE: Truth behind Charli XCX's feud with Taylor Swift as she prepares from Grammys performance 'She and Matty are madly in love,' claimed a source at the time. 'It's super-early days, but it feels right.' While dating reports swirled, Taylor gushed about her happiness during a concert, telling her Eras tour fans in May: 'I've just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life, ever before,' adding that 'it's not just the tour.' Why did Matty and Taylor split? But by June, it was over. A source close to Taylor confirmed she was 'single' and not in contact with him anymore. It was claimed the pair broke up due to busy schedules and incompatibility. ‌ A source told Entertainment Tonight at the time: "Taylor and Matty broke up. They are both extremely busy and realized they're not really compatible with each other. "Taylor's friends want what's best for her and aren't shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship." As the pair began dating, Healy wasn't touring but he later set off on a mammoth European tour which meant he was no longer able to visit Taylor for dates in between her Eras tour gigs. ‌ 2024: Tortured Poets and Lyrical Fallout When Swift's album The Tortured Poets Department dropped in April 2024, fans immediately clocked apparent references to Healy – especially on 'Guilty as Sin?', 'The Black Dog,' and 'But Daddy I Love Him.' She seemed to paint their short fling as chaotic, obsessive and misunderstood. When asked about being the subject of a diss track, Healy shrugged: 'Oh, I haven't really listened to that much of it, but I'm sure it's good.' Later that year, he told a podcast he wouldn't be writing about her, saying: 'I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about my casual romantic liaisons just because I was famous.' 2025: Matty's subtle nods to Taylor in upcoming music Despite his previous remarks, whispers are now circulating that The 1975's forthcoming sixth album might contain subtle nods to Swift. Whether he's preparing to respond or maintain his silence, one thing is certain - their story might not be over just yet.
