Inside Matty Healy's surprising and short-lived Taylor Swift romance

Daily Mirror4 days ago

Glastonbury headliner The 1975's star Matty Healy and Taylor Swift's romance took fans by a surprise, but their love story spans back over 10 years. Here's how it all unfolded
The whirlwind fling between Taylor Swift and Matty Healy, The 1975's frontman, left fans scratching their heads with more questions than answers after a series of sneaky backstage sightings and intriguing lyrics. But while the public watched every move, the short-lived romance seemed tumultuous, possibly even messier than what met the public eye.
After her split from long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn, Taylor was suddenly linked to The 1975's Matty Healy – a man whose chaotic reputation couldn't be more different from her understated ex. Matty's presence became immediately noticeable at Taylor's Eras Tour concerts, lip-syncing words like 'This one is about you,' while fans tried to decode glances and gestures between the pair that seemed way too deliberate to be random.

Denise Welch's son Matty, now 36, and singer Taylor, now 35, didn't make it Instagram official, they were far from secretive. In between dinner dates they were snapped by paparazzi and frequent departures from her New York City apartment – and he even performed with Phoebe Bridgers – one of Taylor's close friends – mid-tour. Online, the Swiftie timeline went into overdrive: some were shipping it and some were in total denial.
Taylor Swift and Matty Healy: From flirtation to fallout
It may have only been public for a blip in 2023, but Taylor Swift and Matty Healy's connection reaches back 10 years. Fans are convinced her heartbreak album - The Tortured Poets Department is all about him.
2014 - 2015: Flirty Beginnings
They first met in November 2014 at one of his shows. By December, rumours were swirling they were seeing each other but Healy quickly shut it down as 'fake', insisting they'd only exchanged numbers. 'As much as it'd be amazing for me if it did, unfortunately it didn't,' he said.
In 2016, he downplayed their connection again, calling the idea of dating Swift 'emasculating.' After backlash, Healy clarified he meant being seen as a pop star's boyfriend before being recognised for his own music and stressed he had 'a lot of respect and admiration for her.'

2023: Taylor 'madly in love' with Matty
Things went quiet until early 2023 - then Swift shocked fans by performing a surprise set at The 1975's London show in January. By April, she had split from long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Just weeks later, it appeared she and Healy were on.
Healy jetted in to watch her Eras Tour shows, with fans spotting both of them mouthing 'This one's about you… I love you' on stage. They were pictured holding hands, cuddling at NYC hotspots, and kissing at members-only club Zero Bond.

'She and Matty are madly in love,' claimed a source at the time. 'It's super-early days, but it feels right.'
While dating reports swirled, Taylor gushed about her happiness during a concert, telling her Eras tour fans in May: 'I've just never been this happy in my life, in all aspects of my life, ever before,' adding that 'it's not just the tour.'
Why did Matty and Taylor split?
But by June, it was over. A source close to Taylor confirmed she was 'single' and not in contact with him anymore. It was claimed the pair broke up due to busy schedules and incompatibility.

A source told Entertainment Tonight at the time: "Taylor and Matty broke up. They are both extremely busy and realized they're not really compatible with each other.
"Taylor's friends want what's best for her and aren't shocked that their relationship fizzled out since she recently got out of a long-term relationship."
As the pair began dating, Healy wasn't touring but he later set off on a mammoth European tour which meant he was no longer able to visit Taylor for dates in between her Eras tour gigs.

2024: Tortured Poets and Lyrical Fallout
When Swift's album The Tortured Poets Department dropped in April 2024, fans immediately clocked apparent references to Healy – especially on 'Guilty as Sin?', 'The Black Dog,' and 'But Daddy I Love Him.' She seemed to paint their short fling as chaotic, obsessive and misunderstood.
When asked about being the subject of a diss track, Healy shrugged: 'Oh, I haven't really listened to that much of it, but I'm sure it's good.'
Later that year, he told a podcast he wouldn't be writing about her, saying: 'I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about my casual romantic liaisons just because I was famous.'
2025: Matty's subtle nods to Taylor in upcoming music
Despite his previous remarks, whispers are now circulating that The 1975's forthcoming sixth album might contain subtle nods to Swift. Whether he's preparing to respond or maintain his silence, one thing is certain - their story might not be over just yet.

Haim fans praise band as 'born headliners' as they suffer sound issues onstage during secret Glastonbury set

Fans of girl band Haim had nothing but praise after they suffered sound issues onstage during their secret Glastonbury set on Saturday night. The Los Angeles-based rock band - which consists of three sisters - performed in front of an eager crowd who were excited to watch them live. Haim had been dropping hints about their appearance in the weeks running up to the show at Worthy Farm. But fans were delighted when they came out, although they suffered some sound issues. During their set, fans were encouragingly heard shouting 'louder, louder' as music nearby was drowning their sound out. Things were quickly corrected and sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim carried on with their highly-anticipated set. The trio took to Glastonbury for the first time since 2022, where they headlined the Pyramid Stage. This year, they performed at The Park stage - and it was well received after they had previously labelled it their favourite. Speaking to radio presenter Jo Whiley, Alana teased: 'We love The Park Stage. The Park Stage is our favourite, 'cause that was like the first time we came to Glastonbury, we got to play The Park Stage. It felt like a movie.' Dropping further hints, Alana continued: 'It was like, "What is going on? How did we get here?" And also just like… you never forget the first time you step onto the farm. 'And it's the most insane feeling, I think, that you'll ever have. But it was incredible, it's the best festival in the world.' Glastonbury Festival is well under way - and there's been plenty of highs and lows so far. On Friday, Lewis Capaldi reduced everyone to tears when he declared: 'I'm back baby' during his emotional return to the Pyramid Stage. The Scottish singer, 28, was greeted with cheers from the huge Worthy Farm crowd, two years after his battle with Tourettes left him unable to finish his performance at the festival and led to a career hiatus. Fans in the crowd could be seen crying and calling out his name before joining him in a rendition of mega-hit Someone You Loved Delighted to back in front of an audience he tearfully said: 'Two years ago I wasn't sure if I'd ever do this again, but I'm back baby!''. Lewis sung a number of his famous hits, before once chocking back tears as he performed brand new single Survive, which highlights the difficult period in his career following his last Glastonbury gig. Fans in the crowd could be seen crying and calling out his name before joining him in a rendition of mega-hit Someone You Loved. In his emotional speech, Lewis said: 'Glastonbury it's good to be back. Won't say too much up here today as if I do I might start crying, but I can't thank you enough for coming here and being with here'. 'Second times a charm hey! It's a short set today but just wanted to come and finish what I couldn't last time, also this was like the worst kept f*****g secret ever'.

Charli XCX, Glastonbury Festival, review: Underwhelming set that was more sizzle than sausage

Glasto-goers lucky enough to get into the Other Stage field to see Charli XCX headline (there were crowd issues because so many people wanted to be there) were treated to a banging 75 minutes of Gen Z-friendly techno-pop. Yet for all the noise and hype, this was a set that was more sizzle than sausage. It was a huge 'event', Charli having released Brat, the most talked about album of the year, last summer. Brat was essentially a ravey celebration of messy rebellion. The album was so big that it launched its own season (Brat summer) and colour (bogey green). As the bass throbbed and the beats pulsated, Charli, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, gyrated and crawled around on all fours in a black bikini and shades, wiggling her bum at the camera and, at one point, snogging her own arm. There was fire and rain on stage, and strobes galore. Yet it was all a bit one-note. As is the way these days, she sang to a backing track (which seemed to include the singing part) and her voice was heavily autotuned. No one around me cared that she seemed to be miming some of the time. But any suggestions that she should be headlining the Pyramid Stage instead of Olivia Rodrigo on Sunday night were scotched. This didn't feel like a Pyramid headlining show. After The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony warmed up the crowd, a curtain fell to reveal the green Brat logo, and Charli bounded on to 365. 'Party Girl' flashed on the screens. 'Fucking jump!' she screamed. And so we did. She did indeed bring the party, and the word-perfect crowd were certainly up for it. Club Classics and Von Dutch were absolutely belting, and there was a moment of tenderness when she asked who in the audience 'is really in love tonight?' Then she said, 'Me too. I love you, George' in reference to her fiancé George Daniel, the drummer in Friday night's Pyramid headliner The 1975. Bless. It's quite a weekend they're having. I'd love to know where that joint aftershow party is. Her song Apple has acquired its own viral TikTok dance (basically this century's Chicken Dance), and a tradition has emerged for cameras to zone in on celebrities doing the dance at gigs. Tonight it was Gracie Abrams, the singer who performed on the same stage earlier and is daughter of Star Wars director J.J. Abrams. The force definitely awakened. There were no guests (speculation was rife that Billie Eilish might appear on Guess). It was just Charli, alone, on stage all show. You did wonder where she goes from here (except for Block 9), and whether – and how – the Brat zeitgeist can be maintained in summers to come.
